Protest against spraying our homes with poisonous chemicals set for today at the Vector Control District’s office

Concerned Orange County residents are gathering today, September 8, 2015, at 4 pm, at the offices of the Orange County Vector Control District to protest the scheduled spraying of a chemical poison on our households that is set to take place this week on Tuesday and Wednesday over the cities of Orange, Tustin, Villa Park and portions of Anaheim, Fountain Valley, Garden Grove, Santa Ana and Stanton between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m.

The O.C. Vector Control District is located at 13001 Garden Grove Blvd., in Garden Grove. News crews from several local TV and radio stations will be there to witness the protest. If you cannot be there you can still call the Vector Control District and complain at (714) 971-2421 or (949) 654-2421. Continue reading→

Free Caribbean Family Festival at the Bowers Museum on Sunday, Sep. 6

The Bowers Museum is hosting a free Caribbean Family Festival this Sunday, Sept. 6, 2015 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Bowers Museum Margaret and Cleo Key Courtyard, located at 2002 N. Main, in Santa Ana.

The Bowers is offering free admission to the Family Festival, the Kidseum and also free admission to the Bowers Museum – for Santa Ana residents and active duty members of the U.S. Military.

Santa Ana’s new Celebration Church will celebrate their grand opening on Sep. 13

Santa Ana has a new church, called the Celebration Church. They are celebrating a grand opening on Sunday, Sep. 13, at 11:15 a.m. The Celebration Church is located at 555 E. Memory Lane, in north Santa Ana. They are across the street from Santiago Park, near the Town and Country Manor Retirement Center. The church entrance is off of Lawson Dr. The building was formerly occupied by the Community Bible Church. That congregation appears to have moved to Huntington Beach.

Dr. Gary Tangeman is the lead pastor at this new church. He was formerly the senior pastor at Crossroads Church, in Bremerton, WA, according to Linkedin. He wrote the book The Disciple Making Church of the 21st Century published in 1996 by Christian Literature Crusade. Tangeman posits in this book that the church exists to glorify God by making disciples, and that pastors and lay leaders alike need to understand and utilize certain crucial principles of ministry to accomplish this goal. The Santa Ana Library will finally be open on Sundays starting on Sep. 20

When I served on the Santa Ana Public Library Board, over 15 years ago, one of my goals was to find a way to open the Santa Ana Public Library on Sundays. There are a lot of young people in Santa Ana who don’t have a place to do their homework and who need access to computers and books to complete their school assignments.

I am glad to report that the Library is finally going to be open on Sundays. Kudos to Santa Ana Parks and Recreation Agency Director Gerardo Mouet for finding a way to fund this. The Santa Ana Library has been closed on Sundays for over 20 years, which has been a real disservice to our young people.

The ceremony will start at 11:00 a.m. The Zoo will close at dusk.

4th Street Market in Santa Ana, CA is having their very own Hatch Chile Festival today, August 30, 2015, from 12 noon to 3 pm, at 201 E 4th St, in Downtown Santa Ana.

So what the heck are Hatch Chiles? Here is their story, courtesy of iHatch Chile:

Developed in the late-60′s and early 70′s by Dr. Nakayama, as a result of a breeding program at the New Mexico State University, a chile was being developed with the intent to supply the need for fresh chiles in the canned and processing industry. But, this unnamed chile was too “beefy.” There was simply too much chile, which in turn, created more waste than the processing facilities would want to deal with. Mayor Miguel Pulido will present Paul Riordan, Founder and President of the Achievement Institute of Scientific Studies (AISS), with the Exceptional Citizen Award for his outstanding service to the City of Santa Ana at Tuesday’s City Council Meeting

A retired Santa Ana Unified School District educator and administrator, Paul Riordan taught chemistry and math at Santa Ana High School for 38 years. With a strong dedication to education and our community’s youth, he founded the AISS program in 2001. AISS provides academically gifted high school students who are economically disadvantaged an opportunity and incentive to intensify their studies in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

The first AISS pilot program consisted of six sophomore girls from Santa Ana High School. These students participated in 120 academic seminar hours in industry workshops involving digital imaging, laser medicine, computer-aided design, optics manufacturing and engineering research. At the completion of the program, the students were accepted into universities such as UC Los Angeles, UC Irvine, Columbia, Chapman and Yale. Continue reading→

As you are aware, the state of California continues to face one of the most severe water droughts on record.

In fact, the 2014 water year was the third driest year on record in terms of precipitation in California. Unfortunately, our state is now entering its fourth consecutive year of drought. I applaud the commitment of California residents by reducing their June water use by more than 27 percent – but more work remains to be done.

As your representative, I am working diligently with my colleagues in Congress to find solutions to the drought. Last month I co-sponsored H.R. 2983, the Drought Recovery and Resilience Act of 2015 which would address innovative water financing, improving infrastructure and water management, planning for future droughts, and other important factors.
