Cloth diapers have come a long way in the past ten years, and The Great Cloth Diaper Change event serves to raise awareness of cloth diapering and create some added buzz and excitement too!
To do this, several people in the cloth diapering movement, including Belly Sprout and Celtic Cloths have joined forces with the nonprofit Real Diaper Association to participate in the second annual Great Cloth Diaper Change international event taking place the day before Earth Day on Saturday, April 21, 2012. Community: Santa Ana Zoo Walkway Replacement Project Brings Partial Zoo Closure
SANTA ANA, CA (March 21, 2012) – The Santa Ana Zoo is getting new walkways as part of a construction project in late April to replace all of the zoo’s old asphalt paths. As a result, a major portion of the zoo where most of the exotic animals and monkeys are exhibited will be closed from Monday, April 16, through Sunday, April 29. The front areas of the zoo not affected by the construction (the Crean Family Farm, the Exploration Outpost activity center, playground, gift shop, Knowlwood Café, maze, Zoofari Express train ride and the Conservation Carrousel) will remain open to the public during the construction project. The Northeast Santa Ana Little League (NESALL) is hosting their Opening Day ceremonies this Saturday, March 3, starting at 8 am. President Dwayne Angebrandt will make a welcoming statement, which will be followed by a “parade of players,” and then the National Anthem, which will feature members of the Santa Ana High School ROTC, including their Color Guard. Rev. Gus Lujan of the Christian Tabernacle will then perform the invocation.
Other Opening Day highlights include an appearance by former Angel great Clyde Wright, who will address parents and players. Wright pitched for the California Angels (1966–73), Milwaukee Brewers (1974) and Texas Rangers (1975). He also pitched three seasons in Japan for the Yomiuri Giants (1976–78). Once a month, OC Parks and the Irvine Ranch Land Conservancy open Limestone Canyon Wilderness Park up for a Wilderness Access Day. Most of the time, Limestone Canyon is only open for limited guided tours, which anyone can sign up for through the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks Activities page. However, during the Wilderness Access Day, you’ll have free reign around any of the trails in Limestone Canyon.
The main draw of Limestone Canyon is a geological feature called The Sinks. The Sinks is a large canyon carved into the soft limestone hills that has been called The Grand Canyon of Orange County. Unfortunately, people are not allowed to climb down into The Sinks, but are only allowed to look at it from above due to their delicate nature. Continue reading
Southern California’s PBS TV station, KOCE , is airing a story this Friday night about the controversy regarding the pending completion of the bike trail in Santiago Creek. A group of residents in Santa Ana’s Fisher Park Neighborhood are trying to stop the bike trail and are advocating for having the area fenced off from the public. The KOCE feature will present both sides of this story.
KOCE is going to air this segment on Thursday night at 5:00pm and 11:30pm on “Real Orange” on PBS SoCal, and it will be repeated on Sunday night at 5:00pm and 11:30pm. Continue reading

The grass-roots neighborhood organization, Neighbors for the Santiago Creek Bike Trail, that was formed to further the goal of a bike path in the “missing link” along Santiago Creek, has launched a new website.
This “missing link” is the 1/4-mile gap located in the Santiago Creek, between the 5 Freeway underpass and Flower Street (see map on reverse.) The City of Santa Ana does not currently have a bike trail proposed in the missing link. With this link closed, our neighborhoods will have ready access to adjoining trails. We want open space and the ability to connect to these outlying bike trails, shopping centers and communities either by biking, jogging or hiking. Continue reading

Opportunity for Section 8 Housing Assistance for Very Low-Income Individuals, Families, Seniors, and Disabled in Orange County

(Santa Ana – CA) The Orange County Housing Authority (OCHA) will open its Waiting List to accept pre-applications for housing assistance from February 15, 2012 until February 29, 2012. The Section 8 Waiting List is the only opportunity for very low-income families, seniors, disabled persons, and individuals to obtain a Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher. Due to the limited number of vouchers and the large number of people that applied, the last time OCHA’s Waiting List was last opened was November 2005. The February 2012 Waiting List opening may be the only opportunity for Orange County residents to apply for many years to come. The Housing Choice Voucher Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and enables OCHA to subsidize monthly rent payments for qualified applicants who live or work in 31 cities in Orange County. The Cities of Anaheim, Garden Grove, and Santa Ana operate their own housing authorities and have separate waiting lists for their residents. Continue reading
