El Centro Cultural de Mexico is hosting their annual Noche de Altares (Day of the Dead) event on Saturday, November 7 , from 1:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. at 4th and Birch Streets, in Santa Ana.
Since 2002, El Centro Cultural de Mexico has been organizing Noche de Altares, or a Night of Altars, a community based Día de los Muertos celebration, where families, students, community organization and businesses come together to create an authentic cultural experience that reflects Mexican tradition and what makes up our communities today. Organized by volunteers, the purpose of the celebration is to honor the ancient traditions of the festival and bring community members together through art, culture, and compassion. Continue reading
OC Parks is pleased to present the annual Halloween Zoo-tacular at the OC Zoo located inside Irvine Regional Park on Saturday, October 31 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Families are invited to partake in a fun-filled spooky day of activities with the animals of the OC Zoo.
At Halloween Zoo-tacular, guests ages 12 and under will trick-or-treat through the zoo and take part in a spooky scavenger hunt. Kids of all ages can create Halloween and fall-themed crafts and enjoy games and a photo/selfie spot with fun props. The OC Zoo animals will participate in the fun and receive treat-filled pumpkins and special Halloween goodies throughout the day. On October 31, the first 100 children ages 12 and under that visit the OC Zoo in costume will receive a special free holiday surprise. Continue reading

In celebration of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) the Santa Ana Public Library proudly presents a special screening of the film The Book of Life (2014). The Book of Life is a 20th Century Fox production that depicts the world of the Latin-American tradition of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) through its colorful characters and music.
This animated film features the voices of a cast of A-List actors: Diego Luna, Zoe Saldaña, Channing Tatum, Christina Applegate, Kate del Castillo, Danny Trejo, Ice Cube, Ron Perlman, and many more! Rich with a fresh take on pop music favorites, The Book of Life encourages us to celebrate the past while looking forward to the future. The film, rated PG-13, can be enjoyed by the whole family. Dia de los Muertos at Fairhaven
Fairhaven’s annual Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) event, on Monday, November 2 at 6 p.m., keeps century-old tradition alive by combining ceremony and a celebration of life to commemorate lost loved ones.
At 6 p.m., a traditional memorial service officiated by Deacon Jerry De Santos and Deacon Luis Gallardo will take place followed by spirited entertainment and complimentary refreshments from El Indio Tortilleria. Continue reading

Community Alert: SANTA ANA’S BEST TAMALE CONTEST / CONCURSO ANNUAL DEL MEJOR TAMAL EN SANTA ANA
The City of Santa Ana will be holding its Third Annual Plaza Navideña event on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at the Downtown Plaza Calle Cuatro on the corner of Fourth and French Streets. The event will take place from 5:00pm-8:00pm and will feature the Santa Ana’s Best Tamale contest. All licensed restaurants located within the city are invited to compete!
To participate, download the application at http://santa-ana.org/parks/upcomingevents/default.asp. Fill out the application and email it to Patty Lopez at plopez@santa-ana.org or hand-deliver it to the Santa Ana Public Library, attention Patty Lopez. Applications will be accepted from Monday, October 12, 2015 through Tuesday, November 13, 2015. The tamale tasting will take place during the Plaza Navideña event on Saturday, December 12, 2015 where the Winner and Honorable Mentions will be selected.

The Orange County Heritage Museum will host its 2nd Annual Civil War Days on Saturday, October 17 and Sunday, October 18, 2015, 10 a.m. each day. Civil War Days is an event that will bring to life one of the most important and pivotal time periods of United States History.
Civil War Days will be fun for both young and old! Guests will be able to interact with Union and Confederate Troops encamped at the museum for the weekend. The troops will provide firing demonstrations for visitors, an artillery weapons display, and a civilian camp, and children’s crafts and activities. The Cottonwood String Band will provide entertainment while teaching Civil War dance lessons to guests. Stop and enjoy our Blacksmiths working the iron forges and take a walk through our 4 acres of natural area. MOMS Orange County Hosts Dream Big Kick Off to Help Provide 400 Car Seats to Families in Need
Over 30 guests attended the Dream Big Kick Off Party at The Robbin’s Nest Wine Bar in Downtown Santa Ana on Thursday, September 17, to begin the process of fundraising for MOMS Orange County and their Possible Dream as part of the Carousel of Possible Dreams presented by the Festival of Children Foundation. MOMS Orange County’s Possible Dream in 2016 is to provide car seats to babies in their program who are most in need. Their goal is to raise $25,000 by November 12 to help purchase 400 car seats. In 2014, over 450 families in the program were in need of car seats that MOMS Orange County was unable to provide.
Guests took time to set up their personal fundraising pages on their mobile devices while enjoying select wines, beers and appetizers. Special guests included California Highway Patrol Car Seat Technician Nancy Coon, and former State Senator and U.S. Congress, 46th C.D. candidate, Lou Correa, who shared a personal story about a family who lost their youngest child as a result of not being in a car seat, and offered his support to help MOMS Orange County achieve their dream. California Pizza Kitchen (CPK), the authority in creative dining with a California vibe, will host a two-day FUNdraiser at all of its Southern California locations to benefit Fire Family Foundation, which supports injured and ill California firefighters and their families. From Sept. 15-16, CPK will donate twenty percent of net sales (dine in, takeout, beverages, catering) across its 44 Southern California locations to the nonprofit organization. Gennieve Marie Rankin, 25-years-old, passed away last Friday in a tragic car accident. She leaves behind her husband, Santiago “El Chago” Duran and a 4-year-old daughter and funeral bills that her family cannot contend with by themselves.
Her family is hosting a Kermes this Saturday, September 12, 2015, at Centennial Park in Santa Ana, located at 3000 W. Edinger Ave., starting at 10 a.m., to raise funds to help pay for her funeral.
