An immigration officer who worked in Santa Ana has been indicted on charges that she took bribes in cash and egg rolls from immigrants seeking citizenship and green cards, according to CBS News.
Federal prosecutors say 47-year-old Mai Nhu Nguyen, an Irvine resident who worked in the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services office in Santa Ana, was indicted Wednesday on three counts of solicitation of a bribe by a public official, according to Fox News. Continue reading

The FBI’s Preliminary Annual Uniform Crime Report, January-December, 2011-2012, has been released online. The news is a mixed bag for Santa Ana. Overall violent crime has gone up marginally by 2% from the previous year, but some categories of violent crime have seen increases of up to 23% while others have dropped by as much as 64%

“A contractor who has done work for the County of Orange this week confirmed that FBI officials contacted him late last year with questions about County Supervisor Janet Nguyen,” according to the Voice of OC.
Additionally, another source told Voice of OC that they had a “wide-ranging” discussion with FBI agents about Nguyen’s fundraising activities, specifically in regards to county contracts. Continue reading

Three High School Inc. Students Win at National Culinary Competition
High School Inc., workforce development students put skills to the test
SANTA ANA – Ashley Blanco, Alejandro Hernandez and Ivan Lopez, senior Culinary Arts and Hospitality students in the High School Inc. Academies at Valley High School, were first-place winners in a recent competition in Washington, D.C. The team cooked a healthy meal that teens across American have indicated they would like to eat at their school cafeteria.
This was part of a national organization that promotes healthy eating in schools to lower childhood obesity that is prevalent in the poor neighborhoods of Santa Ana and others across the nation. The Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce began its High School Inc. program five years ago in an effort to build a stronger economic base by empowering youth to train for careers before they graduate from high school. COUNTY AWARDED $2.5 MILLION IN NEW FUNDING FOR HOMELESS SERVICES
HUD GRANT WILL DIRECTLY ASSIST THE COUNTY’S POPULATION OF HOMELESS FAMILIES AND INDIVIDUALS
(Santa Ana, CA) – The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recently awarded $2,522,824 in new project funding to the County of Orange in homeless assistance funding under the 2011 Continuum of Care programs grant competition. The annual grant competition and the grant award to the County of Orange, with OC Community Services as the lead agency, is a direct result of the County’s partnership with cities and homeless service organizations to address the issue of homelessness in Orange County. (Santa Ana, CA) – The Orange County Housing Authority (OCHA) has been awarded $884,560 to further expand its ongoing Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Program (VASH). This funding is a portion of $75 million appropriated to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for 2012 in a coordinated effort involving HUD, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and local housing authorities to provide permanent housing for homeless veterans in conjunction with supportive services. 2012 Citizenship and Integration Grant Program

Today we are pleased to announce $5 million in competitive grant funding to expand high quality citizenship preparation services for permanent residents.
Since the creation of the Citizenship and Integration Grant Program in FY 2009, USCIS has awarded a total of $18.3 million through 111 grants to immigrant-serving organizations. These organizations have provided citizenship preparation services to more than 29,000 permanent residents in 30 states and the District of Columbia. Continue reading
Community: THE DEPARTMENT OF LABOR AWARDS THE SANTA ANA WORKFORCE INVESTMENT BOARD $4.9 MILLION TO FUND ITS BRIDGE ENGINEERING PROGRAM
SANTA ANA, CA (February 9, 2012) – In May 2011, the Department of Labor announced the availability of approximately $240 million in funds for H-1B Technical Skills Training Grants program. The grant program is designed to provide education, training, and job placement assistance for U.S. residents, in industries where labor shortages exist.
Recently, the Department of Labor awarded the City of Santa Ana, $4,997,479 to fund its Bridge Engineering Program. The intent of the program is to provide academic and peer support to pre-engineering students as they work their way to an engineering degree. The program will recruit students from local high school STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) programs, Santa Ana College, and long term unemployed individuals. Participants will be guided through a four-year engineering program with intensive academic support and placed in On-The-Job Training paid internships with Santa Ana employers and other local companies. A growing divide exists within our middle class, and this divide will continue until we implement real reform to our tax structure – both for families and for corporations.
