There will be a basketball game on Wednesday, November 30th so spread the word, many parents as well as players will be very hungry after and what better than supporting the Band Program (which plays at all the Football and Basketball Games) while eating GOUMET FOOD conveniently located on the school parking lot, from 4:30pm until 9:30pm. Pictures from today’s Patchwork Indie Arts and Crafts Festival in Santa Ana

My wife and I visited the Patchworks Festival today.  It is set up through 5 pm today over on Main St., just north of the Bowers Museum.

The event features a vast array of food, craft, and arts vendors – and products available run from gourmet jams and jellies to clothing, jewelry, handmade soap, vegan chocolate, chocolate chip cookies with bacon, and handmade butter crunch.

Vendors included established businesses like the Gypsy Den, Mother’s Market, Calacas and the Memphis at the Santora, and independent businesses run out of garages and trailers. Continue reading→

Southwest Community Center to host a Thanksgiving meal for the needy

Santa Ana’s Southwest Community Center is hosting a free  Thanksgiving Day Dinner Dinner for the needy on Nov. 24.  It will be served from 11:00 am – 3:00pm.  Volunteer Hours run from 8:00am—5:00pm.  Set-Up runs from 8:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.  The Dinner Service will run from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. And clean up will run from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

The mission of the Southwest Community Center is to provide food, clothing, shelter, guidance, health, and referral services to economically disadvantaged individuals and families, and assist and encourage those whom they serve to achieve self-sufficiency. Continue reading→

Organizacion Haz la Diferencia is hosting a Masquerade Carnival fundraiser on Nov. 11, from 8 pm to 12 midnight, at Spoons Restaurant, located at 2601 Hotel Terrace Drive, in Santa Ana.  Tickets are $35.  100% of the proceeds go to helping underprivileged children in Ensenada!

Tickets can be bought pre-sale or at the door.

Sneak a peek at Santa Ana’s new Playground restaurant this Saturday night

Open wide…

Jason Quinn’s Playground is about ready to open up shop.  According to his Facebook page, Quinn is going to have sort of a soft opening this Saturday, Nov. 5, during the Santa Ana Art Walk.  He won’t be open yet but will be letting folks have a sneak peek at his new restaurant.  Their grand opening has been set for Nov. 18-20.

Quinn is famous for his Lime Truck, which was featured on the Great Food Truck Race in the Spring of 2011.  You can read about his vision for Playground on his new website.  Apparently his dad helped fund the new business. Continue reading→

Santa Ana’s El Torito, at the MainPlace Mall, closes down

No more $1 Taco Nights at Santa Ana’s El Torito…

Santa Ana has lost its El Torito, which was located at the MainPlace Mall.  “The 5,600-square-foot restaurant, which debuted just before the economic downturn, could not sustain good financial results at the location, said Rick Van Warner, spokesman for El Torito’s parent company Real Mex Restaurants,” according to the O.C. Register’s Fast Food Maven column.

What a shame!  I loved their $1 Taco Nights – and their freshly made guacamole, which their servers would prepare table side. Continue reading→

The Memphis at the Santora now offers an authentic Crawfish boil

The French began to settle New Orleans in the 1690’s.  In 1763 the French sold the area to the Spanish, who rebuilt many of the structures on Bourbon Street after two fires.  If you visit there today you will see that the architecture is mostly Spanish, not French.  As for the cuisine, well it is Cajun – and it is awesome.

I thought of that as I visited the Memphis at Santora restaurant yesterday to partake of Executive Chef Diego Velasco’s new Crawfish Boil.  The last time I ate crawfish was when I visited New Orleans in 2005, while I was overseeing the safety of 300 restoration workers, after Hurricane Katrina.   Continue reading→

Meet comic artist Lalo Alcaraz at the Delhi Center’s Zocalo on 12/1

The Delhi Center is hosting a Zocalo event with special guest Lalo Alcaraz, the nationally syndicated cartoonist of “La Cucaracha,” which is one of my favorite newspaper comic strips, on December 1, from 6 pm to 9 pm.

Armando de la Libertad, the CEO of the Delhi Center, had this to say about their Zocala event in their event invitation: We have prepared a very special evening for you.  We’re promising shorter speeches, great food,  mariachi, tequila tasting, a deejay plus a special audio visual presentation by Lalo Alcaraz — the cartoonist who produces La Cucaracha, the nationally syndicated cartoon.”
