“Getting to Zero” – December 1st is World AIDS Day

(Santa Ana) – December 1st is World AIDS Day, an international day of reflection to remember those who have died and those who are living with HIV or AIDS (HIV disease). World AIDS Day 2011 is about “Getting to Zero”: Zero New HIV Infections, Zero Discrimination and Zero AIDS Related Deaths. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that approximately 33.4 million people are living today with HIV disease, including over 1.2 million people in the United States. One in five (21%) of those people living with HIV is unaware of their infection (CDC, 2010). Continue reading→

Supervisor Nguyen gets caught trying to disenfranchise the poor

“Orange County Supervisor Janet Nguyen caused an uproar this month when she abruptly proposed major changes to CalOptima, the county’s $1.3-billion program that provides medical coverage to about 430,000 poor adults and children,” according to the Voice of OC.

I wondered at the time just what the heck Nguyen was up to.  Now we know.  “Early this month Nguyen proposed major changes to the composition of the CalOptima board that would have given control to businesses and providers and reduced the influence of groups that represent the poor who use the medical services.”

Now that sounds like Nguyen.  She is all about using government power to reward her supporters.  I remember when she voted against letter grade ratings for restaurants.  Sure enough, I found that she had accepted thousands of dollars from restaurants with major health violations. Continue reading→

CVS Caremark Donating $6 Million in Free Flu Shots to Direct Relief USA For Uninsured Patients of Community Clinics and Health Centers

More than 400 participating clinics across the country to distribute vouchers redeemable at any CVS/pharmacy or MinuteClinic location for a free flu shot 

Woonsocket, Rhode Island, September 13, 2011: CVS Caremark announced today that it has partnered with Direct Relief USA to offer up to $6 million in free flu shots to community clinic and health center patients who lack health insurance.

More than 400 participating clinics and health centers across the country will identify uninsured individuals from their existing patient populations and provide them with a free flu shot voucher, which is redeemable at any CVS/pharmacy or MinuteClinic location, including UCI Family Health Center (800 N. OC Public Works and Health Care Agency Programs Receive 2011 CSAC Merit Awards

(Santa Ana, CA) — Two County of Orange programs were chosen to receive 2011 Merit Awards by the California State Association of Counties (CSAC).

The Health Care Agency’s “Surge OC” has improved how the local health care community will respond to future emergencies by bringing together the county’s 34 city emergency planners and first-responder organizations to OC Public Works’ recently developed Customer Care and Permit Services unit improved the permit process for customers, whose reported satisfaction “We are very proud that our programs have been selected from among 250 nominees statewide and recognized for using creativity and innovation to better serve and protect Orange County,” said Chairman Bill Campbell.
