County Commemorates One-Year Anniversary of The Courtyard, County’s First Year-Round Homeless Shelter

Santa Ana, CA (October 5, 2017) — Today, the County of Orange commemorated the one-year anniversary of its first County homeless shelter, the Courtyard Transitional Center in Santa Ana. Board of Supervisors Vice Chair Andrew Do, First District, who was instrumental in bringing the Courtyard to fruition, visited with staff and residents at the shelter to signify the milestone.

“The Courtyard was a response to a homelessness crisis in the Santa Ana Civic Center, and it has made a significant impact on the lives of the individuals who have taken advantage of the resources provided,” said Supervisor Do. “We have seen tremendous success in the last 12 months, with more than 153 people from the Courtyard connected to housing and more than 125 who are employed. I have no doubt that we will continue to see people coming to the Courtyard as the first step in ending their homelessness.” Continue reading→

OCSD expands homeless outreach efforts to target crime along Santa Ana Riverbed

SANTA ANA, Ca. (Sept. 12, 2017) – The Orange County Board of Supervisors today unanimously approved a resolution to support enhanced patrol efforts along the Santa Ana Riverbed and County flood control channels.

The action by the Board is consistent with the Sheriff’s Department’s efforts to expand its already-established Homeless Outreach Team (HOT) with an enforcement detail tasked with targeting crime along the Santa Ana Riverbed. Continue reading→

Hobo with three strikes gets 21 years to life in prison after attacking and robbing a Santa Ana business owner

Fernando Zazueta Gonzalez, a 61-year old homeless man who pistol-whipped a Santa Ana store owner with a pellet gun during a robbery, was sentenced Friday to 21 years to life in prison, according to the O.C. Register.

Gonzales is a third-striker with previous burglary and robbery convictions. He got busted again in March after he robbed a beauty-supply business on West Third St.  Continue reading→

A dead homeless man was found by the 4th Street Market in DTSA this morning

The SAPD is investigating the suspicious death of an unidentified homeless man in his 60s whose dead body was found on Tuesday, July 25, at around 7:35 a.m., on a sidewalk in downtown Santa Ana, near the 4th Street Market and Playground restaurant, at the 400 block of North Bush Street, according to the O.C. Register.

The victim had sustained a head wound. The police do not yet know if he fell or was pushed from a nearby parking structure or if he was attacked. Continue reading→

A homeless man was arrested for robbing a gas station in Costa Mesa

Orange County’s homeless population is becoming a big criminal problem, not just in Santa Ana but in surrounding areas.

On Monday, June 19, at about 5 p.m., when it was still broad daylight, a homeless man entered an Arco gas station located at 2490 Fairview Road, and he pretended to be armed with a weapon, according to the O.C. Register. Continue reading→

OC RESCUE MISSION CALLS FOR COMMUNITY SUPPORT TO HELP SEND HOMELESS CHILDREN TO SUMMER CAMP

Orange County, Calif. – The Orange County Rescue Mission is in critical need of the community’s help to provide funding for its fifth annual “Summer to Remember” program, a nine-week summer camp for children living at the Village of Hope, a transitional living facility for homeless individuals and families.
Starting at just $15 per day per child, community members can choose to sponsor one day, one week, or even the entire summer for a homeless child.

The program, which begins on June 19 and is designed for children ages 5 to 12, provides kids with STEM-based learning activities, as well as a curriculum that focuses on building solid foundations in science, technology, engineering and math. Continue reading→

Transient arrested in Garden Grove for the stabbing death of a Santa Ana man on Friday

Daniel Jones-Hoebel, a 19-year old transient, was arrested by the Garden Grove police on Saturday, June 10, in the Friday, June 9 stabbing of 20-year-old Genaro Diaz of Santa Ana, who later died of his injuries at a hospital, according to the O.C. Register.

Antonio Esquivel, a 21-year old resident of Garden Grove, was arrested shortly after the Garden Grove police found Diaz, who was stabbed in the chest, at the 12800 block of Haster Street, just after 9 p.m. on Friday night. The police believe that Diaz got into a fight with the two men. Continue reading→

Transient arrested for stealing packages from homes in Orange, Irvine and Tustin

The Greenwood Homes in the Tustin Legacy development have been experiencing a spike in theft related property crimes since the beginning of the year. In addition to regular Neighborhood Watch meetings, several of the residents have installed video security surveillance systems.

On May 23rd a homeowner had a package stolen from the front porch and the surveillance video captured the suspect fleeing in a black Mercedes. On May 25th the same vehicle was involved in a package theft in a nearby Irvine neighborhood. On May 26th the suspect struck again at a different residence and he was once again captured on video surveillance fleeing in a black Mercedes. The license plate on the vehicle was stolen from a similar looking Mercedes in the City of Orange weeks earlier. Continue reading→

A woman was shot and wounded at Santa Ana’s Guest Inn & Quality Suites this morning

Do you remember when the Guest Inn and Quality Suites, located at 2151 E. First St., was converted into the first large-scale permanent supportive housing project in Santa Ana for the homeless, last year? Well they are in the news again as the SAPD is now investigating a shooting that occurred there early this morning in which a woman was wounded, according to the O.C. Register.

When SAPD police officers arrived at the Guest Inn, after getting a phone call about a woman being shot, they found a woman with what looked like one gunshot wound to her upper torso, according to the SAPD. Continue reading→

At the Board of Supervisor’s Meeting Tuesday, Santa Ana resident Flor Roman was appointed by Supervisor Andrew Do to the Assessment Appeals Board No. 3.

Flor Roman was born and raised in Mexico City, where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration before immigrating to the United States in 1990. Flor has had extensive experience in the financial and real estate fields. In 1995, Roman joined Maxwell Real Estate in Santa Ana and obtained her Real Estate Broker’s License. In 1999, Roman acquired Maxwell Real Estate and changed the name to Roman Realtors & Financial Services, Inc., where she now serves Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, with the same enthusiasm, dedication, and professionalism that has helped propel her to great heights in the real estate industry. On Tuesday, the Board of Supervisors (Board) approved the homeless ad-hoc committee’s proposal to create a six month pilot program, which is designed to position the County as the lead in providing the Continuum of Care services needed to assist our citizens out of homelessness.

The homeless ad-hoc committee consisting of Supervisor Do and Supervisor Spitzer proposed this pilot program as a step towards a comprehensive plan to end homelessness, especially in encampments around the County. Continue reading→

Advisory: Suspect In Assault Road Rage And Vandalism Case Now In Custody

UPDATE: Arrested: Corbalan Jorge Hernandez (57) Homeless

On 3/28/17 a suspect vandalized the interior of a Chevron gas station in 2100 block E. McFadden. The incident was captured on surveillance video and has gotten national media attention. Today at 1600 hours employees in 2700 block S. Fairview saw the suspect and recognized him from the video. Our officers responded and took him into custody without incident. The suspect has been booked into SAPD Jail for Felony Vandalism.

The City of Santa Ana approves more funding for housing for the homeless

Community: City of Santa Ana Approves Funding to Provide Permanent Supportive Housing for Homeless Veterans and Chronically Homeless Individuals

At its last City Council meeting, the City of Santa Ana unanimously approved awards of 100 project-based vouchers to develop two permanent supportive housing projects with wrap-around supportive services for homeless veterans and chronically homeless individuals.

The first project, Santa Ana Veteran’s Village to be developed by Jamboree Housing Corporation, located at 3312 West 1st Street in Santa Ana, was awarded 75 HUD-VASH project-based vouchers to develop 75 units of permanent supportive housing for homeless military veterans. The design will feature two three-story buildings including a multipurpose space, a private meeting office for the service provider, property management offices, a central laundry facility, a fitness room, a community kitchen, a community garden, and barbecue grills.
