For over 25 years we have served hot meals to the homeless gathered in the Civic Center, Santa Ana’s public square. During that time we have also invited women and children to stay in our home; currently over 50 adult women live and dine with us as guests. Many Catholics are unaware that our right to perform those Works of Mercy required by the Greatest Commandment has been abridged in the past and might well be again.
In 2003 the City of Santa Ana threatened to fine our landlord $1000 per day and arrest us for violating the “Mission Ordinance.” This ordinance made serving meals or offering lodging in one’s home illegal, except for profit as a business. We were cited first for offering bread to our neighbors, and for violating the Mission ordinance, and threatened with a year in jail if we failed to evict children and their parents from our home. We declined to do so, and only the intervention of Bishop Soto and a coalition of local pro bono attorneys gained for us an agreement for our continued operation. Continue reading

Community Alert: City of Santa Ana Announces Special City Council Meeting on Homelessness
On Thursday, June 12th, the City of Santa Ana will hold a Special City Council Meeting on Homelessness starting at 4:00 pm in the Council Chambers (22 Civic Center Plaza, Santa Ana, CA). The Special Council Meeting will serve as a work study session to review the history, policies and opportunities related to addressing homelessness in Santa Ana and throughout Orange County.

In Orange County, thousands of persons experience homelessness in a given year. Many remain homeless because they cannot access affordable housing, permanent supportive housing, medical care or benefits. Due to the lack of year-round emergency shelter, many homeless individuals are forced to live in public spaces and face criminal penalties for engaging in necessary activities – like sleeping in public – that are a direct result of their homeless status.

Christmas Eve Clothes and Blanket Donations to Civic Center Homeless
(Santa Ana, CA) – Orange County Supervisor Todd Spitzer is teaming up with OC Community Services/Homeless Prevention and the Orange County Health Care Agency to distribute 120 sets of clothing and blankets donated by a generous 3rd District anonymous constituent to homeless individuals on Christmas Eve.
The distribution will take place at the Orange Civic Center Plaza on Tuesday, December 24, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. until 10:30 am until all clothing has been distributed. Continue reading

Every year, the County of Orange contracts with Mercy House Living Centers, Inc. to operate and provide services for the County’s Armory Emergency Shelter Program. The shelter at the Fullerton Armory opened last week and the shelter at the Santa Ana Armory will open on Monday, December 2. Continue reading

Local event seeks to provide “poverty-free” day for local families in need
SANTA ANA, CA (October 1, 2013) – On Saturday, October 5, 2013, the City of Santa Ana is co-sponsoring the Convoy of Hope in conjunction with churches, businesses, and community organizations to distribute over 35,000 pounds of groceries to thousands of people in need in Orange County. On this special day, at Jerome Park in the city of Santa Ana, thousands of guests from across our communities will receive free groceries, health services, haircuts, family portraits, community services, live entertainment, prayer, lunch, games and activities for children, and more! About 30 showed up to protest the Santa Ana Police Department. They question whether the 5 deadly police shootings in the city this year were justified. “We want to let Santa Ana Police know that they are out of control and that we want them to stop killing the citizens of Santa Ana. This is the 5th person they’ve killed in their city this year,” said Terri Teramura, a local activist, according to Fox News.
But a security guard, who wished to remain unidentified, told CBS News, that on July 12—two weeks before Hans Kevin Arellano was shot once in the chest in a shopping center parking lot during a confrontation with a female veteran officer—he got into a physical altercation with the suspect outside of Northgate Market on Harbor Boulevard.
