The next “Partners for Santa Ana Live Event is set for this Thursday, July 31, 2014 from 9:45 am – 11:30 am at the Orange County Register, located at 625 N Grand Ave., in Santa Ana.

This event is hosted by Charles’ Armijo and Sean Mill. The event will feature speakers Robert Gragoso of Anchor Loans and Ruben Mata, a Mindset Coach.

The event is free for realtors. There is a small fee for others who may want to attend. The proceeds will be donated to the Santa Ana Boys and Girls Club. Continue reading→

OC Supervisors approve plan to build a year-round homeless shelter in Santa Ana

The Orange County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a plan Tuesday to spend $3.6 million for a Santa Ana warehouse that will be converted into a year-round shelter, according to the OC Weekly.

The 23,000-square-foot, 200-bed emergency center is planned to include a multi-service center for homeless families and individuals. The county will operate the shelter through a provider and offer services to assist individuals to assimilate into the workforce. Services will include mental and public health services, assistance for veterans and housing needs. The county will work with local resource groups to provide help, according to the O.C. Register. Electrical fire at a Santa Ana home displaces 15 residents

An electrical fire in Santa Ana displaced 15 residents Sunday afternoon, fire officials said, according to the O.C. Register.

The fire started at 3:40 p.m. at a home in the 1300 block of South Halladay Street and was extinguished about 20 minutes later, according a watch commander with the Orange County Fire Authority.

What is really mind-blowing is that “Eleven adults and four children were displaced by the fire. A total of 12 requested assistance from the Red Cross but no injuries were reported.” Continue reading→

Is the City of Santa Ana trying to drive the homeless out of the Civic Center?

For over 25 years we have served hot meals to the homeless gathered in the Civic Center, Santa Ana’s public square. During that time we have also invited women and children to stay in our home; currently over 50 adult women live and dine with us as guests. Many Catholics are unaware that our right to perform those Works of Mercy required by the Greatest Commandment has been abridged in the past and might well be again.

In 2003 the City of Santa Ana threatened to fine our landlord $1000 per day and arrest us for violating the “Mission Ordinance.” This ordinance made serving meals or offering lodging in one’s home illegal, except for profit as a business. We were cited first for offering bread to our neighbors, and for violating the Mission ordinance, and threatened with a year in jail if we failed to evict children and their parents from our home. We declined to do so, and only the intervention of Bishop Soto and a coalition of local pro bono attorneys gained for us an agreement for our continued operation. Continue reading→

Community Alert: City Announces Draft 2014-2021 Housing Element Update Now Available for Review

SANTA ANA, CA (November 6, 2013) – The General Plan contains the City’s values and vision for its future. The Housing Element of the General Plan communicates goals, policies and programs to address Santa Ana’s local and regional housing needs and a sustainable quality of life.

Over the past year, the City has been working with the community to update the Housing Element and refine the City’s housing policy. This effort studied a variety of housing considerations including maintaining and improving current housing stock, housing for groups of special needs, and where future housing can be developed. This has also been an opportunity for the City to include relevant polices promoting health, safety, multi-generational housing options, cultural arts, wellness, and mobility as part of the Housing Element Update. Santa Ana City Council Approves Historic Designation for One of Orange County, California’s Last Orange Orchards

SANTA ANA, CA (June 7, 2012) – The Santa Ana City Council voted 4-1 in favor of placing the Sexlinger orange orchard and farmhouse, a century-old farm, on the Santa Ana Register of Historical Properties at its meeting on June 4, 2012. (Santa Ana, CA) – The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recently awarded $2,522,824 in new project funding to the County of Orange in homeless assistance funding under the 2011 Continuum of Care programs grant competition. The annual grant competition and the grant award to the County of Orange, with OC Community Services as the lead agency, is a direct result of the County’s partnership with cities and homeless service organizations to address the issue of homelessness in Orange County.
