ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE APPROVES LEGISLATION TO INCREASE COLLEGE ACCESS FOR DEPORTED U.S. CITIZENS
Sacramento – Today, the California State Assembly Committee on Higher Education approved Senate Bill (SB) 141, authored by State Senator Lou Correa (D-Santa Ana), with a broad bipartisan vote. This measure will restore access to California colleges, universities and scholarships for children who are U.S. citizens, but are forced to live abroad as a result of their parents’ deportation. SAUSD’s Migrant Education Program Offers STEM Workshops for 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Students
SANTA ANA, CA – July 16, 2013 – N.A.S.A.’s trained facilitators will conduct activities designed to teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students in the Santa Ana Unified School District the Engineering Design Process, a series of steps that engineers use to guide them as they solve problems. Made possible through the District’s Migrant Education Program, students who qualify for the program will engage in STEM workshops on August 5, 6, and 7, 2013 at Villa Fundamental’s gym from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The culminating project is a demonstration of lunar vehicles and rockets created by the students. The Santa Ana City Council Monday night approved a new downtown business tax, replacing a controversial special property tax that had divided downtown businesses and brought the issue of gentrification to the fore, according to the Voice of OC.
Under a settlement agreement, the city will for three years provide $400,000 annually for Downtown Inc.’s cleaning and security services. The proceeds of the new district will be equally split between two groups: Downtown Inc. and the Santa Ana Business Council, a group composed of business owners who opposed the special property tax and are likely to conduct more Latino-oriented promotions. The revenue from the new tax district, approximately $250,000 annually, is far less than the revenue generated by the previous property tax district.
So as I understand it we are going to have a split marketing effort in Downtown Santa Ana with one group promoting the area to hipsters and the gay community and the other to paisas. Continue reading

SANTA ANA – A father was convicted today of the murder of a Santa Ana man after becoming angry over a physical altercation that occurred one month prior between his daughter and the victim. Cesar Gerardo Marta, 41, Omaha, NE, was found guilty by a jury of one felony count of second degree murder and has a 1993 prior strike conviction for robbery. He faces a maximum sentence of 35 years to life in state prison at his sentencing Aug. 9, 2013, at 9:00 a.m. in Department C-41, Central Justice Center, Santa Ana.
At approximately 10:00 p.m. on May 26, 2010, 27-year-old Cesar “Danny” Gutierrez Hernandez left his Santa Ana home with his brother and a friend to give the friend a ride home. As the three men walked toward their car, Marta and an unknown accomplice approached the group and asked if one of them was Danny. The defendant sought out Hernandez with the intention of retaliating against him for a physical altercation between the victim and Marta’s daughter one month earlier. Continue reading
An immigration officer who worked in Santa Ana has been indicted on charges that she took bribes in cash and egg rolls from immigrants seeking citizenship and green cards, according to CBS News.
Federal prosecutors say 47-year-old Mai Nhu Nguyen, an Irvine resident who worked in the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services office in Santa Ana, was indicted Wednesday on three counts of solicitation of a bribe by a public official, according to Fox News. Continue reading
The OC May Day Coalition is asking the public and their members to join them at the next Santa Ana Public Safety Committee meeting, on Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at 5:30 pm, as they bring “awareness to the issue of the collaboration between the SAPD and ICE and demand that this collaboration be stopped.”

Orange County’s Democratic State Assembly Representatives, Tom Daly and Sharon Quirk-Silva, did not vote for the “Trust Act,” which made its way once more through the California Assembly this week by a final vote of 44-22, according to Gabriel San Roman over at the OC Weekly.
San Roman reported that “The legislation was vetoed late last year when it reached the desk of Democratic Governor Jerry Brown. Supporters say the bill authored by Assemblyman Tom Ammiano will limit deportations fueled by the fingerprint-sharing federal Secure Communities program while restoring confidence between law enforcement and largely immigrant, Latino communities.
