William H. Spurgeon, the founder of the City of Santa Ana, purchased seventy-six acres of land from the Yorba heirs in 1869 and laid out what was to become the Orange County seat. With only six or eight homes in the place and about one hundred fifty souls, thirteen people organized First Baptist Church of Santa Ana on a Saturday in March of 1871, at the local school house.

Services were held in the school house until the first church was built in 1876. The cost was $4000 and it was located on four lots donated by Spurgeon at the corner of Main & Church Streets. The interior was unfinished for a number of years and financial problems were so severe during the first 10 -12 years, that the property was sold for taxes several times. At one point, members mortgaged their homes to pay off the church obligations and one member lost his home because of this. And Santa Ana developed, so did the church. As many members were from surrounding area, certain groups took their letters and established in neighboring cities. Continue reading→

Santa Ana Police Department Advisory: Homicide Detectives identify three suspects in March 9th murder with Media and Community assistance.

Santa Ana Police Department Homicide Detectives requested Media and Public assistance in identifying two murder suspects on March 15, 2013. Homicide detectives were looking for assistance in identifying suspects wanted in connection with the March 9th 2013 murder. Since that request, Homicide Detectives have identified three suspects involved in the murder.

Irvine man knifed to death by Chile Picante Restaurant, on South Main St.

Santa Ana Police Department officers responded to a call of subjects fighting in the 1900 block of S. Main. Upon arrival, they found a male victim lying on the sidewalk at Main and Commercial with an apparent stab wound to his chest. The male was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The victim was identified as 26 year old Paul Anthony Garcia, with a last known address in the City of Irvine.

The initial investigation revealed that Garcia was inside of the Chile Picante restaurant, when two suspects entered and had a confrontation with him. The suspects exited the restaurant, and Garcia exited shortly after. One of the suspects then chased Garcia across the street and assaulted him. Sometime during the assault, Garcia was stabbed. Garcia collapsed on the street, where he was found by responding officers. Continue reading→

Board Makes a Splash! County of Orange Agrees to 25 Year Lease to Bring Wild Rivers Back to Irvine at Orange County Great Park

(Santa Ana, CA) — The Orange County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a lease with Wild Rivers today to construct and operate a new water park in Irvine on County property.

Located at the former MCAS El Toro, the 17 acre park will be constructed across from The Great Park on property the County received after the former Marine Corps Air Station closed. Wild Rivers’ previous lease with the Irvine Company expired last year after operating successfully for 27 years on Irvine Company property adjacent to Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. Are you ready for yet another candidate for Santa Ana’s Ward 3? Park Santiago resident Shane Ramon Barrows has pulled papers for the City Council, but he says he won’t be accepting political contributions. I never do either when I run for office, so I can appreciate that.

Barrows is joining an already crowded race that features Orange County middle manager Charles Hart, who lost badly in his run for Mayor two years ago; former Council Member Brett Franklin; and Planning Commissioner Eric Alderete, who has to be considered the early favorite as the only Latino in the race. Most folks believe that the Ward 3 incumbent, Carlos Bustamante, will not stand for reelection, as he is facing serious felony charges of sex crimes and public theft. Continue reading→
