Over 1,000 people gathered to join in the Occupy Orange County protest and march that took place today in the Irvine, Tustin area, according to the Coast Report. The OC Weekly also reported that there were 1,000 protesters. For some reason the OC Register reported that there were only 600 protesters. Click here to see the official Occupy OC photo album.
The event began at 10 a.m. with people gathering across the sprawling green lawn in front of city hall. An hour later, a small band of aging rockers armed with a saxophonist played the lulling strains of Pink Floyd’s “Us and Them,” as a long line of people snaked for several blocks to the intersection of Barranca and Jamboree, according to the OC Weekly.

Occupy Irvinebegins today, October 15, at 10 am, at Irvine’s City Hall, located at 1 Civic Center Plaza, in Irvine, at Harvard and Alton. Initial speakers will include both UCI professors & disenfranchised citizens. Protesters are being urged not to bring any aerosol spray paint or weapons.
According to the OC Weekly, Oct. 15 has been referred to as a Global Day of Revolution by groups around the country protesting the stranglehold corporations wield over the government.
Occupy Irvine won’t be limited to Irvine residents (most of whom are more interested in occupying BMWs and Audis). A contingent of artists, poets and musicians from Santa Ana will be traveling to Irvine to participate in an Open Mic forum led by Santa Ana’s own Theo Hirsch. Continue reading
Support Occupy Orange County CA is going to occupy Orange on Saturday, Oct. 8, beginning at 12:00 noon and ongoing through the afternoon.
They ask that you wear comfortable shoes and if you want to bring a sign, keep them tasteful. They have four signs of their first official flyer for protesters to use and 400 flyers to pass out. Continue reading

“California Governor Jerry Brown has vetoed SB 847, a bill by Senator Lou Correa (D-Santa Ana) that would have required medical cannabis cooperatives and collectives be located at least 600 feet from residential zones,” according to 420 Times.
The bill was SB 847, by state Sen. Lou Correa (D-Santa Ana), who said he wanted to allow cities to chose their own regulations and to protect children living near such facilities from second-hand smoke, according to the L.A. Times.
In vetoing Correa’s bill that would have unnecessarily restricted medical marijuana clinics, Brown wrote “Decisions of this kind are best made in cities and counties, not the state Capitol,” according to columnist Steven Greenhut, in the North County Times. Continue reading

Help Scare Away Hunger by Building a Scarecrow in the Park
Organizations invited to compete in exhibition at Great Park Pumpkin Harvest
IRVINE – The Great Park is inviting local businesses and community organizations to create a scarecrow to help scare away hunger during the second annual Scarecrows in the Park event. The competition, presented by the Orange County Great Park and Second Harvest Food Bank, gives local businesses and community organizations the opportunity build and display unique scarecrow creations while providing support for a worthy cause. Teams can create their own imaginative scarecrow that showcases their organization’s spirit and mission, while at the same time supporting efforts to help alleviate hunger in Orange County. SANTA ANA – A drunken driver has been charged with murdering his nephew and severely injuring his brother-in-law after driving while intoxicated and refusing the offer of a bartender and police officer to call him a cab. Tapu Aniceto Sitagata, 27, Santa Ana, is charged with one felony count each of murder, driving under the influence causing bodily injury, driving with a blood alcohol .08 percent or more causing bodily injury, hit and run with injury, and one misdemeanor count of driving on a suspended license. Will Irvine Mayor Beth Krom support naming the O.C. Great Park after Harvey Milk?
While everyone has been focusing on the ruckus between Santa Ana Mayor Pro Tem Claudia Alvarez and the Chase family, at last night’s special session of the Santa Ana City Council, there was one other controversial item on the agenda.
The Council named a city-owned plaza that is in the East End Promenade, formerly the Fiesta Marketplace. They chose to name it the Plaza Santa Ana.
An Irvine blogger ripped this decision and he questioned why the City Council did not name the Plaza after Harvey Milk, the gay San Francisco politician who was murdered by another Supervisor. Milk has since become an icon of the gay movement. Continue reading
