Groups from El Centro Cultural de Mexico and Santa Ana’s Community Artists have failed, by their own admission in a recent issued statement, to bring a social justice lens to Santa Ana’s first Arts and Culture Master Plan.
Despite having seats on the arts and culture master planning committee table and being represented as stakeholders in planning focus groups where they influenced the plan in meetings, group members have claimed — after the plan was passed on Tuesday August 16th — that the plan has “no social justice lens” as quoted in a recent OC Weekly article Santa Ana City Council Approves 10-Year Arts and Culture Master Plan. The City of Santa Ana will recognize Grammy Award-winning recording artists LOS LOBOS with a proclamation declaring May 6, 2016 as “Los Lobos Day” during their performance at The Observatory in Santa Ana.

Six-Part Series Covers Orozco, Rivera, Siqueiros, Kahlo and Muralism’s Roots
The Bowers Museum in Santa Ana will be presenting a six-part lecture series titled Art in Context: Mexican Muralism in Perspective (1920-1970) starting on Wed., January 27 at 11am and continuing on consecutive Wednesdays through March 2. Hosted by art historian Annalee Andres with Guest Lecturer Valerie Taylor, PhD, each lecture takes place at 11am and will focus on the careers of the three prominent artists of the Mexican mural movement known as los Tres Grandes: Jose Clemente Orozco, Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros. The series will also cover the work of painter Frida Kahlo and key figures such as Jose Guadalupe Posada and Dr. Atl (Gerardo Murillo).
The lectures will take place in the Fluor Gallery, and tickets are $12 for each lecture or FREE for Bowers members. Bolivian Consul Marco Antonio Valverde Carrasco was at the Santa Ana City Council meeting last night to invite the public to join Bolivian stars Carla Ortiz and Bernardo Peña in person for a special OC Film Fiesta fundraiser screening of OLVIDADOS (FORGOTTEN), Bolivia’s official entry to the Oscars, this Saturday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. at the Frida Cinema, located at 305 E. 4th St. on Santa Ana’s historic Calle Cuatro. This special OC Premiere screening will be the film’s only showing in Orange County! This special screening will be preceded by a 6pm VIP reception and followed by a special Q&A by Bolivian star Carla Ortiz and Bernardo Peña.

(Santa Ana, CA) The Film Fiesta is proud to take you back to 1928 this Sunday with the OC Premiere of this lost Dolores del Rio silent classic RAMONA with a new original score written and performed live by award-winning composers Joseph Julian Gonzalez (Misa Azteca) and David Spear (Ballet Robotique, The Rainbow War). In 1928, an emerging Hollywood starlet named Dolores del Rio took the nation by storm when she starred in Edwin Carewe’s silent film adaptation of RAMONA, Helen Hunt Jackson’s beloved tale of romance in Old California. Over the ensuing years, copies of the movie disappeared, and this important piece of film history was thought to be lost forever. Then, in 2010, a single print was discovered in a film archive in the Czech Republic. The film has been restored and preserved by the Library of Congress, and the intertitles were translated back into English. Continue reading
