SANTA ANA, CA (Aug 22, 2012)- The 34th annual Calle Cuatro Festival, a two day celebration commemorating Mexico’s independence, will take place at the famous Calle Cuatro, 4th street, in Santa Ana on Sept 15th and 16th from 11am-10pm. MX LIVE Entertainment along with the City of Santa Ana along and Exitos 93.9 are producing the festival which is considered the biggest Mexican independence day celebration in the world outside of Mexico. UPDATE: Council Member Sal Tinajero has pulled papers to run against Mayor Pulido this November. Chisme has it that Benavides will be pressured to get out of the race ASAP.

UPDATE: Council Member David Benavides has announced that he is running for Mayor. Pulido has nothing to worry about.

Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido’s detractors are befuddled about how exactly he keeps on winning, every two years. What they don’t understand is that their views don’t reflect the views of the residents at large in our city.

Santa Ana is a huge city. The “inside baseball” and chismoso/gadfly set is fairly small, perhaps a hundred people at most. In 2010, mayoral challenger Alfredo Amezcua lined up a lot of these folks – and combined them with the dwindling “Usual Suspects.” Amezcua spent a quarter million dollars and he thought he had victory in the bag. But you see what he was listening to was an echo chamber – and he failed to reach the majority of voters in Santa Ana. Continue reading→

Imagine if you will that instead of an unarmed Manuel “Stomper” Diaz getting chased down and shot in the back, the victim had been some random white skateboarder in Anaheim Hills? And what if the shooter had been a Latino cop? Oh my. What a different outcome we would have – or would we?

The O.C. Register today asked for calm in Anaheim, opining “The Register’s Editorial Board urges calm and healing at this time of division in the community. We believe a small minority may feel there is something to be gained by inciting further violent confrontations. Nothing is to be gained by fanning animosity on either side of the issue.” Continue reading→

SANTA ANA, CA (July 20,2012) – During the month of July, the Santa Ana Public Library will be showing three movies. On Monday, July 23, 2012, the documentary, “Los Que Se Quedan” (Those Who Remain) will be shown. This film, by Juan Carlos Rulfo and Carlos Hagerman, documents the families of those who have crossed the border to the United States in search of better opportunities. It explores the memories and identities of those who remain behind and continue to wait for their absent family members. Council candidate Onofre now embracing her Republican identity

Carlos Bustamante is the last Republican left on the Santa Ana City Council. And his political career appears to be done, as he is facing numerous felony charges of sex crimes and public theft. The dwindling Republicans in Santa Ana may however have a new champion – Karina Onofre, the young candidate who is running for the Ward currently represented by Mayor Pro Tem Claudia Alvarez.

That Onofre is a Republican may have escaped the attention of Dan Chmielewski, the editor of the Liberal OC, who introduced Onofre to his readers in a post a few months ago that described her as “a 29-year-old moderate who is liberal on some issues, Libertarian on others and fiscally conservative.” Continue reading→

Play time is over – the Santa Ana City Council appears to be rebelling against Mayor Pulido

“The Santa Ana City Council is scheduled July 16 to consider a ballot measure that for the first time could place a term limit on longtime Mayor Miguel Pulido and change term limits for other council members,” according to the Voice of OC.

Council Member Michele Martinez placed an 85 A item on the agenda that reads as follows, “DISCUSSION OF POTENTIAL BALLOT MEASURE REGARDING MAYORAL AND COUNCIL TERM LIMITS.”

Both Martinez and her colleague, Council Member David Benavides, ripped Santa Ana Mayor Pro Tem Claudia Alvarez this week, on Facebook, when Alvarez’ ally, Santa Ana Parks and Rec Commissioner Max Madrid, filed a lawsuit to compel the Santa Ana City Clerk to issue nomination papers to Alvarez. She is seeking to run again in November, for reelection, although she appears to be termed out. Continue reading→

THE CHURCH OF SCIENTOLOGY OF ORANGE COUNTY WELCOMES THE SANTA ANA COMMUNITY TO FASHION SHOW – SANTA ANA:
For the first time since the Church of Scientology opened its doors on June 2, 2012, this past weekend, it held its first community event – a Fashion Show in honor of The Way to Happiness. 178 people participated in and attended the first event.

City Council to honor Jimenez for stopping alleged DUI hit and run driver

When Santa Ana resident Beatriz Jimenez saw alleged DUI driver Jessica Louise Cowan plow through the Meza family, last Saturday morning, killing 5-year-old Osmara Meza, she had to make a quick decision. She wanted to stop to help, but she saw that Cowan wasn’t stopping, so she pursued her and ended up using her car to block Cowan’s escape, over at Main and 17th.

Jimenez is still having nightmares about what happened. And she is coming to terms with the fact that she is now a hero. Santa Ana Council Member Michele Martinez posted today on her Facebook page that she and Santa Ana Council Member Vincent Sarmiento will be honoring Jimenez at the next Santa Ana City Council meeting. DRUNKEN DRIVER CHARGED WITH MURDERING 5-YEAR-OLD GIRL AND INJURING SISTER AND MOTHER BY DRIVING THROUGH RED LIGHT AND CRASHING IN CROSSWALK

SANTA ANA – A drunken driver was charged today with murdering a 5-year-old girl and severely injuring the child’s sister and mother by crashing into them in a crosswalk after driving through a red light. Jessicah Louise Cowan, 33, Lake Hughes, is charged with one felony count each of murder, driving under the influence of alcohol causing bodily injury, driving with a blood alcohol level over .08 percent causing bodily injury, hit and run causing injury, an infraction for possession of marijuana while driving, and sentencing enhancements and allegations for having a blood alcohol level over .20 percent and causing bodily injury. If convicted, she faces a maximum sentence of 15 years to life in state prison. The People will be requesting Cowan be held on $1 million bail at her arraignment today, Tuesday, June 26, 2012, in Department CJ-1, Central Jail, Santa Ana. The time is to be determined. Joe Dovinh announces he will run for the 34th Senate District in 2014

Democratic 72nd Assembly District candidate Joe Dovinh, who came in third in the Open Primary on June 5, has announced that he will be running for the 34th State Senate District in 2014, in an email message he sent to supporters today. The 34th S.D. is currently held by Lou Correa (D-Santa Ana).

Dovinh lives in Garden Grove, which appears to be entirely in the 34th. Other cities in the 34th include Santa Ana, Seal Beach, Los Alamitos, Rossmoor, Westminster, Midway City, Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach, and part of Anaheim. According to the final voter registration data for the 34th, 19.4% of the voters have Asian surnames and 24% of the voters in the district have Latino surnames. Continue reading→
