Santa Ana Public Library’s Annual Summer Reading Program: Reading Takes You Everywhere

The award-winning Santa Ana Public Library promotes literacy and provides a safe gathering place for families all year long. The Santa Ana Public Library is proud to present the annual Summer Reading Program, an exciting, literacy-based program for children, teens, and adults.

This year’s theme is “Reading Takes You Everywhere” a creative way to use the spirit of reading to show that literacy has no limits and can transport you to any location through the journey of reading! The Summer Reading Program is an excellent way to promote reading and continuous development for people of all ages. For children and teens, participation in a vacation reading program strengthens their reading skills. Adult participation serves as a positive example in promoting the importance of reading to children and family members and fosters their own lifelong learning. UC IRVINE’S JUMPSTART LITERACY FAIR TO BRING BOOKS TO LIFE TO ENCOURAGE

EARLY CHILDHOOD READING ON SATURDAY, MARCH 3 AT HERITAGE MUSEUM IN SANTA ANA

The program works with early childhood educators to reduce achievement gaps for children in underserved communities

Families from across Orange County are expected to attend UC Irvine’s Jumpstart’s free annual Spring Literacy event on Saturday, March 3, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Heritage Museum of Orange County at 3101 W. Harvard St., in Santa Ana. The exciting event supports the development of literacy through STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) activities, readings from children’s authors, activities such as making your own balloon rocket car, science experiments, and other STEAM related activities to encourage an interest in reading among preschool age children.

Jumpstart will give more than 1,000 free books to children who attend the event. Nurses from Santa Ana Unified School District will be present as well to provide free basic health screenings for children. Children’s author Annie Banannie, who brings stories to life with her unique balloon storytelling, will also be at the event. Continue reading→

KPMG’s Nationwide “Read to Succeed” Initiative comes to Taft Elementary School in Santa Ana on March 29, 2017

KPMG volunteers will read to students; 1,000 new books to be distributed to children

As part of KPMG’s nationwide “Read to Succeed” initiative, its 100+ offices throughout the United States are conducting events in the coming weeks at schools and organizations in low-income communities at which KPMG people, spouses, family members, and alumni, will volunteer their time to get more than 150,000 new books into the hands of children who need them most.

In Santa Ana, KPMG volunteers will be reading to Taft’s K-6 general education, special education, deaf, and hard of hearing students and providing each of them with books. Continue reading→

Community Volunteers Tutor First Graders Remotely through Online Tutoring Program

(Santa Ana, CA) – With the goal of every child reading at grade level by the end of the third grade, the Santa Ana Unified School District, with the partnership of Innovations for Learning, and the support of Orange County United Way, will launch “Read Santa Ana Read,” a volunteer program supporting nearly 250 first graders at reading during the 2015- 2016 school year. “For 30 minutes once a week, volunteers from the community can help a child learn to read without ever leaving their desk. Through an online tutoring program, Tutormate, volunteers will be able to interact with our students remotely from their computers and tablets and tutor and encourage them to become strong readers,” said, Michelle Rodriguez, Ed.D. Jumpstart at UCI Annual Spring Literacy Event to Bring Books to Life to Encourage Early Childhood Reading Habits

WHAT: More than 450 families from across Orange County are expected to attend Jumpstart’s free annual Spring Literacy event on Saturday, March 7, 10 a.m. at the Heritage Museum in Santa Ana. The exciting event brings books to life with story-themed booths such as the Giving Tree, readings from children’s authors, activities such as a Cat in the Hat sack race, science experiments and more to encourage an interest in reading among preschool age children. Jumpstart will give more than 1,000 free books to children who attend the event. The Frida Cinema is hosting a a Book Signing & Live Reading by the Barrio Writers from Summer 2013 today, Saturday, March 29, 2014, at 2 pm., at 305 East 4th St., in Downtown Santa Ana.

In the Summer of 2009, thirty students came together to form the first Barrio Writers chapter in Santa Ana, California, a non-profit reading and writing program that aims to empower teens through creative writing, higher education and cultural arts. The first edition BW Book was published in June 2010.

Since then, five summers have passed, four summers of youth works have been released & now more students have been published in the 5th Edition Barrio Writers, A Collection of Works by Teens for Teens, Teachers & Our Communities. Continue reading→

SANTA ANA, CA (January 18, 2013) – In an effort to provide additional service to the community, the Santa Ana Public Library has installed new computers for public use at the library’s main branch. This month, an additional 10 Google Chromebooks have been added to the 58 computers already available for patrons. Anyone with a Santa Ana library card can use a public computer at no charge for Internet access, word processing, job searching, or schoolwork. Santa Ana USD children to join the Bug Squad and help set world reading record on October 4, 2012 at Heninger Elementary School

Event: Dressed in their fun pajamas and antennas, hundreds of pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students at Heninger Elementary School will join 2 million children across the country in listening to the popular story book Lady Bug Girl and the Bug Squad provided to the school by the Pearson Foundation. Read for the Record is a national event, which promotes quality early childhood education for at-risk children ages 0-5 and reading to help close the early education achievement gap. The media is invited to attend the record-breaking reading event which is part of the national Jumpstart’s Read for the Record campaign. Each child will take home their own copy of Lady Bug Girl and the Bug Squad by David Soman and Jacky Davis thanks to a donation of 400 books by the Pearson Foundation. SANTA ANA TEENSPACE TO HOST CONGRESSWOMAN LORETTA SANCHEZ AND SUPERIOR COURT JUDGE FREDERICK P. AGUIRRE

SANTA ANA, CA (July 10, 2012) – On Saturday, July 14, 2012, at 3:00 p.m. the Santa Ana Public Library will host Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez and Judge Frederick P. Aguirre during its weekly Teen Civics program. The program will consist of both the Congresswoman and Judge speaking to our public on the topic of ‘Making a Difference: Law, Politics, and Civil Engagement.’ The program will commence promptly at 3pm with Judge Aguirre speaking to the public and hosting a short question and answer session. Judge Aguirre has served as Superior Court Judge for the County of Orange since 2002. Following Judge Aguirre’s talk, Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez will speak to the youth and the public about being proactive in your community. She will speak from 3:30 – 4:00 p.m. Sanchez has been a Congresswoman for California’s 47th Congressional District since 1997. After the presentations both speakers are invited to sit in for TeenSpace’s weekly Teen Civics program where the participants will discuss issues related to the 1st Amendment and the Bill of Rights.
