SANTA ANA – The award-winning Santa Ana Public Library promotes literacy and provides a fun and safe gathering place for adults and families all year long. Once again, the Santa Ana Public Library is proud to present their annual Summer Reading Program, an exciting, literary-based program for children, teens, and adults.

This year’s theme is “Reading by Design,” a creative way to use the spirit of reading to show that literacy is the foundation for all, be it architecture, fashion, or art! The Summer Reading Program is an excellent way to promote reading and continuous development for people of all ages. For children and teens, participation in a vacation reading program strengthens their reading skills and helps prevent them from falling behind academically. Community: Santa Ana Public Library Presents the 9th Annual Children’s Day/Book Day | 9ª Día de los Niños / Día de los Libros

SANTA ANA, CA – On April 22, 2017, the Santa Ana Public Library, winner of the 2016 National Medal for Museum and Library Services, will celebrate Día de los niños/Día de los libros (Children’s Day/Book Day). The celebration, also known as Día, will take place at the Main Library from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The event will showcase a variety of fun-filled activities and services for children and their families.

Children’s Day began in 1925 and was designated as a day to bring attention to the importance and well-being of children. In 1996, nationally acclaimed children’s book author Pat Mora proposed linking the celebration of childhood and children with literacy, thus the creation of Día. Día annually celebrates children, families, and literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Continue reading→

KPMG’s Nationwide “Read to Succeed” Initiative comes to Taft Elementary School in Santa Ana on March 29, 2017

KPMG volunteers will read to students; 1,000 new books to be distributed to children

As part of KPMG’s nationwide “Read to Succeed” initiative, its 100+ offices throughout the United States are conducting events in the coming weeks at schools and organizations in low-income communities at which KPMG people, spouses, family members, and alumni, will volunteer their time to get more than 150,000 new books into the hands of children who need them most.

In Santa Ana, KPMG volunteers will be reading to Taft’s K-6 general education, special education, deaf, and hard of hearing students and providing each of them with books. Continue reading→

SANTA ANA, CA – To honor the Santa Ana Library for being selected to receive a 2016 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the Santa Ana Public Library will hold a celebration to commemorate this landmark achievement.

The event will take place on Tuesday, October 11, 2016, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Santa Ana Public Library. Guests will enjoy refreshments, special guest speakers, photo opportunities, and the chance to explore library programs and services. Those who attend will also have the opportunity to share their experiences with the library through interviews conducted by the Library of Congress affiliated StoryCorps. The Friends of The Santa Ana Public Library will hold a Children and Young Adult Book Sale on Friday, October 7, 2016 and Saturday, October 8, 2016. The sale will take place in the Basement Book Store at the Main Library. The Main Library is located at 26 Civic Center Plaza, Santa Ana, 92701.

On Friday, October 7th the sale will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
On Saturday, October 8th the sale will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and the famous $3-a-Bag sale will run from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Community Alert: Santa Ana Public Library Main Branch Closing for Remodel / Biblioteca Pública de Santa Ana Cierra por Remodelación

The Santa Ana Public Library Main Branch will be closed August 12th through August 28th to refurbish the main floor public space. The library was last remodeled in 1991. In the twenty-five years since, trends in library design have moved toward a more open design.

The remodeled space will feature expanded seating in an opened configuration that will provide patrons with easier access to materials and staff assistance. New furniture and modern flooring is included in the design. Continue reading→

Santa Ana’s newly renamed Centro Comunitario de Educación (formerly Libreria Martinez) will host the author of Spy in the Teachers’ Lounge at a book-signing and fundraising event Sat., May 21 from 6-8 p.m.

A Santa Ana barrio provides the backdrop for author Béa Tomaselli Tiritilli’s young-adult novel. The book’s protagonist is Rosie Fernandez, who escapes bullies at her middle school by finding a hiding spot at lunchtime—under the teachers’ lounge window. Although Rosie has plenty of challenges and drama at school and at the home she shares with her abuelita and nearly destitute parents, she soon learns her teachers face a crazy mix of predicaments in their own lives. The conversations Rosie overhears in the lounge are surprising and sometimes shocking: teachers’ suspicions that the assistant principal is drinking on the job; woes in teachers’ romantic lives; and much more. National Medal for Museum and Library Service Recognizes the Santa Ana Public Library’s Community Contributions

SANTA ANA, CALIFORNIA (April 19, 2016) – The Institute of Museum and Library Services today announced the Santa Ana Public Library of Santa Ana, California, as one of 10 recipients of the 2016 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the nation’s highest honor given to museums and libraries for service to the community. For 22 years, the award has celebrated institutions that respond to societal needs in innovative ways, making a difference for individuals, families, and their communities. The award will be presented at an event in Washington, D.C., on June 1.

The Santa Ana Public Library has been in service to the City of Santa Ana for 125 years and currently serves 335,264 residents, 79 percent of which are Latinos and 10 percent Asian. Fifty percent of the children enrolled in the local schools are first-generation English learners. Through programming that touches all age groups and demographics, the library’s goal is to improve the community’s collective life. Addressing the needs of the young immigrant families in the community, the library focuses on special programs to mentor youth, families and others to help them bridge the digital divide. In honor of International Women’s Month, the Santa Ana Public Library will host a very special speaking engagement in March with writer, director Josefina López.

Josefina López is best known for authoring the play and co-authoring the film Real Women Have Curves. She is an activist who has spoken out on topics such as Chicano theater, women’s history issues, and minority representation in cinema.
