The Santa Ana Public Library celebrates Children’s Day/Book Day

SANTA ANA, CA – An estimated 1,500 children from across Orange County will descend upon Santa Ana, as the Santa Ana Public Library will join hundreds of libraries across the country in celebration of Día de los niños/Día de los libros (Children’s Day/Book Day). The celebration will take place at the Main Library on Saturday, April 26, 2014 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The event will include a variety of fun-filled activities and services for children and their families. A Tale of Survival

Author Grace Flores-Hughes to Speak and Sign Her Book “A Tale of Survival: Memoir of an Hispanic Woman” at Librería Martínez de Chapman University, Tuesday, February 18

Author Grace Flores-Hughes will appear in person to talk about and sign her book “A Tale of Survival: Memoir of an Hispanic Woman” at Librería Martínez de Chapman University on Tuesday, February 18 at 7 p.m.   In the presentation and in her book, Flores-Hughes tells her own story — of a Mexican-American girl growing up in south Texas during the ‘50s and ‘60s and the challenges she faced on a daily basis just to survive.

The event is free and open to the public, and Flores-Hughes’ book will be on sale at the venue.   Librería Martínez de Chapman University is located at 216 N. Come and meet Santa Ana High School Graduate Vinicio Murillo (Class of 2006), author of the children’s book Roderick Roach, 1/11/14 at his book signing at Libreria Martinez de Chapman University located at 216 N. Murillo was born in Santa Ana and is a student at California State University, Fullerton. He’ll be introducing and signing his first published book, Roderick Roach, the first in a planned trilogy.  The book introduces Rod, an 11-year-old student at the Wentworth Academy for Children with Special Abilities. Rod has the power of invisibility, but he’s overshadowed by his world-famous best friend, Ezra, who can manipulate blue fire. Then Rod gets the chance of a lifetime when he must face a dangerous dragon terrorizing the school. Does he have what it takes to protect his friends and conquer the dragon? Daniel Chavez Moran Award Seeking Literature Ideas from Youths

A new writing contest is giving Orange County students a shot at finding solutions to Latin America’s poverty crisis. The literature award, open to 12 to 18 year-olds, was created by Daniel Chavez Moran, a member of the United Nations Development Program’s security advisory council. The UNDP encourages developing countries to protect human rights and works to help curb poverty globally.

The Daniel Chavez Moran Award welcomes submissions from youths who live in the United States aged twelve to eighteen to submit their best ideas on how to combat the serious problem of poverty in Latin America through the use of essays, short stories, testimonials and poetry.

Santa Ana Community Alert: Santa Ana Public Library Welcomes Author Ruben Acosta Vallejo

SANTA ANA, CA (September 11, 2013) – The Santa Ana Public Library is pleased to present local author Ruben Acosta Vallejo for a discussion of his book Dying Freedom: Insurrection 1810. Through this wonderful work of historical fiction, Acosta helps a new generation understand the personal cost of their ancestors’ struggles and triumphs.

Ruben Acosta is a teacher who grew up in Santa Ana, California. He learned English as a teenager while practicing his grandfather’s mariachi songs. He is a former amateur boxer and enjoys playing baseball. Ruben received a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from California State University, Fullerton, as well as a Master’s Degree in Cross-Cultural Teaching. He currently teaches second grade at Heroes Elementary in the City of Santa Ana and lives in Old Town Orange with his wife and their daughter and son. Continue reading→
