Correa takes a small lead as the First District election earlyresults are posted

First District Election Results

The early results from today’s First District Special Election have been posted by the Orange County Registrar of Voters and former State Senator Lou Correa is in the lead by 149 votes.  Former Supervisor Janet Nguyen’s henchman, Andrew Do, is in second place with 38.4% of the vote.

Garden Grove Councilman Chris Phan is in a distant third place with only 5,824 votes.  While he did a lot of walking he didn’t get in the mailboxes and that is crucial in low turnout special elections. Continue reading→

Predictably Andrew Do blew off the First District candidates forum that was held in Santa Ana yesterday.  Why would he want to put himself in a position to have to explain why he quit the Garden Grove City Council in 2011 or answer the questions about whether or not he actually lived in Garden Grove at that time?

The rest of the candidates showed up including Lou Correa, Chuyen Van Nguyen, Chris Phan, Lupe Moreno and a write-in candidate, Mark I. Lopez.

First District candidates are looking for volunteers to help their campaigns

The field for the First District’s Special Election, to replace Janet Nguyen, who was elected to the 34th State Senate District in the November, 2014 General Election, is now set.  The candidates include (appearing below in the order they will be placed on the ballot):

  • Lou Correa (D-Santa Ana), California State Senator
  • Andrew Do (R-Garden Grove), Supervisor’s Chief/Businessowner
  • Lupe Morfin-Moreno (R-Santa Ana), Office Specialist

Rosario Marin and her GOP pals

Rosario Marin, who worked for Gov. Wilson during the Prop. 187 campaign, is now promoting Roman Reyna

Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation Monday that repeals unenforceable provisions of Proposition 187, the two-decade-old measure that sought to withhold public services from immigrants in the country illegally, according to the L.A. Times.

Ironically Santa Ana Councilman Roman Reyna announced today that Rosario Marin, a Republican who served as President George W. Bush’s U.S. Treasurer, would be the keynote speaker at a Reyna for Mayor campaign reception on Sep. 23.  Marin worked as Governor Pete Wilson’s chief of Legislative Affairs for the Department of Developmental Services starting in 1996 and in 1997, she was named deputy director of Govern Wilson’s Office of Community Relations. In that position Marin had to defend the administration’s support for Prop. 187, according to Wikipedia. Lou Correa on the State Senate Floor

State Senator Lou Correa has opted not to run for Mayor of Santa Ana.  Why did he get cold feet?

“After a review of various factors, I have decided not to run for Mayor at this time,” Correa (D-Santa Ana) stated in an email to a Voice of OC reporter. “I was deeply touched by all of the calls of encouragement that I received from folks from all walks of life, and all across party lines. I thank you all,” according to the Voice of OC.

Well that statement tells us nothing at all.  What I heard from several inside sources was that Correa didn’t think he could beat the longtime incumbent, Mayor Miguel Pulido.  Correa has enough money in his vast campaign war chest that I would be willing to wager that he conducted a poll and the results were no bueno.  Pulido, apparently, is still the man in Santa Ana. We have been wondering for a few weeks now how it is that an unknown former Democrat from Lake Forest named Sherry Walker ended up on the ballot as a Republican nominee for the 69th Assembly District in this June’s Open Primary Election. Now we know. A reader forwarded us the nomination signatures that Walker turned in to the Orange County Registrar of Voters. You can check out the signatures for yourself by clicking here.

Popular SAUSD Trustee Ceci Iglesias, a Republican as well, should have no problem advancing to the November Runoff Election but nevertheless putting Walker on the ballot was a dirty trick and now we know who did it.

Two names jumped out from the list of voters who signed Walker’s nomination papers – former SAUSD Trustee Rosie Avila and crazed Minuteman Lupe Moreno. Now isn’t that interesting? These two ladies like to pretend that they are Christian stalwarts but here they are trying to undermine the campaign of a fellow believer, Iglesias. What gives? Continue reading→

Pulido is beating Benavides by a larger margin than he beat Amezcua in 2010

Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido is currently leading his closes challenger, Santa Ana Council Member David Benavides, by over 12,000 votes. Pulido has 27,068 votes, or 48.2% of the ballots versus 14,982 votes, or 26.7% of the ballots for Benavides.  There were four other mayoral candidates this year, including George Collins, Roy Alvarado, Lupe Moreno and Miguel Angel Briseno. 

Pulido beat Alfredo “Al” Amezcua two years ago, in 2010, by just under ten thousand votes. Pulido got 21,588 votes, or 49.5% of the ballots, in 2010, versus 11,689 votes, or 26.8% of the ballots, for Amezcua, according to Smart Voter. There were three other mayoral candidates in 2010 – Alvarado, Collins and Charles Hart. Continue reading→

Can two Latinas in Santa Ana save the OC GOP from itself?

Now OC GOP Chairman Scott Baugh is singing a different tune – in the wake of the overwhelming defeat of the Republican Presidential nominee, Mitt Romney, by President Barack Obama. I saw Baugh on Rick Reiff’s post-election TV show and he admitted that the GOP better figure out immigration. That is the message that both Iglesias and Onofre are now espousing as well.

Iglesias was victorious in her campaign for the SAUSD School Board. In fact she defeated two Democrats – Valerie Amezcua and Myriam Tinajero, who were supported by liberal SAUSD Trustee John Palacio and by the unions. Continue reading→

Hatergate: How Council Member David Benavides ended up honoring the Minutemen in July, 2010

It started out innocently enough.  The City of Santa Ana didn’t have the budget to put on their own 4th of July event, back in July of 2010, so they allowed a group of residents to put on their own event – and the City’s Parks and Recreation Agency let them use the Santa Ana Public Library, over in the Civic Center, to stage the event.

It made sense I suppose to have a Library Commissioner run the show.  She was also at the time heading up the Friends of the Library.  But upon closer scrutiny, there was a major problem. The lady in question was Lupe Moreno, a notorious Minuteman. These are folks who absolutely hate immigrants and who have been accused of hate crimes.  When Moreno found herself needing more volunteers it was her Minutemen friends who got the call. A forum for Santa Ana mayoral candidates is set for 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26 at Latino Health Access, 450 W. Fourth St., according to the O.C. Register.

The forum, sponsored by Voice of OC, the non-profit health agency and other groups, will focus on youth issues.

Why aren’t there more women elected in Santa Ana?

It is hard to believe that the Santa Ana Unified School District’s Board of Education, which consists of five Trustees,  includes only one woman – longtime Trustee Audrey Noji.  Or that the Santa Ana City Council only has two women – Mayor Pro Tem Claudia Alvarez and Council Member Michele Martinez.  After November that number will be down to one, as Alvarez is termed out.  There are five men on the Santa Ana City Council.

What is up with that?  Figure that over half of our electorate must be made up of women.  Are they voting?  Are they voting for men?  Are there not enough women running for office in Santa Ana? Continue reading→

Santa Ana mayoral candidate George Collins is best known in town for one thing – he always brings a video camera along, wherever he goes.  He brought his camera early in September to the Connect to Council Santa Ana Council Candidates Forum.

The footage of the Council candidates was marred by poor sound, which was the fault of the event organizers and the facility, not Collins, but his mayoral candidate footage came out pretty sharp.  You can see it atop this post. Continue reading→
