The Team Benavides consultant, John Palacio, lost his tug of war with Mayor Pulido
What a night. To sum it up, Mayor Miguel Pulido won easily. Over in the RSCCD Area 5 race his longtime ally, Claudia Alvarez, also won.
What about Team Benavides? Well, David Benavides got beat, badly. So did Eric Alderete, in Ward 3, by an unknown candidate, Angelica Amezcua, who barely campaigned. And while Vince Sarmiento won in Ward 1, he did so barely over another unknown candidate, Estela Amezcua. The one guy in the Benavides cabal who won with a big margin was Roman Reyna, in Ward 5. Two winners – Mayor Miguel Pulido and President Barack Obama
As expected, Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido is winning handily tonight. The O.C. Voter Registrar has posted the early returns, which are absentee ballots. Here are some of the evening’s highlights:
Santa Ana Mayoral challenger David Benavides wasn’t on the ballot two years ago, as he had no opponent for his City Council seat. The last time he appeared on the ballot was six years ago, back when he still mentioned his wife and family on his fliers and websites.
So it was a daunting task for Benavides to ramp up his name I.D. this year in a few short weeks, having announced his mayoral campaign rather late in the game.
As such I think he is going to be toast on Tuesday, Nov. 6. But what about the other races? Who will win? Santa Ana Mayoral challenger David Benavides got bad news today as a mailer hit the mailboxes touting his plan to raise his own City Council pay.
Benavides, who is supporting every single tax increase on the November ballot, formed a City Council committee, according to the mailer, which you can see here, in July of this year. The committee’s mission was to explore raising the City Council’s pay and benefits! Luckily Mayor Miguel Pulido put a stop to this. Continue reading
Santa Ana Mayoral challenger David Benavides announced his endorsement today by California’s Lt. Governor, Gavin Newsom. “Despite being the second highest-ranking office in California, the Lieutenant Governor has no real responsibility or power to represent the governor on issues such as trade negotiations or a legislative agenda (i.e. in contrast to its powerful counterpart in Texas), so the job has been jokingly defined by political insiders as “get up, read the paper, see if the governor is dead, if not, go back to sleep,” according to Wikipedia.
Contrast Benavides’ underwhelming Newsom endorsement with the powerful endorsement that Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido picked up today, while he was attending the Orange County Forum luncheon. The speaker was U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein, one of the most influential lawmakers in the United States. The audience was packed with hundreds of CEO’s and other business and civic leaders. They sat in rapt attention today as Senator Feinstein announced her support and endorsement of Mayor Pulido. Continue reading
Mayor Pulido’s cowardly opponents have targeted his children
By now you have probably seen the horrible anonymous mailers that have been attacking Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido – accusing him and his family of hosting a party where a teen was reportedly raped.
The story was reported by the Voice of OC, an online news website that I have at this point lost all respect for. Their seed funding came largely from the Orange County Employees Association, a government workers union headed up by Nick Berardino, who has had some unknown beef with Pulido for some time. And the Voice of OC’s board members include lobbyist Joe Dunn, who tried to move the O.C. Federal Court of Appeals to Irvine but was famously blocked by Pulido. Continue reading

A forum for Santa Ana mayoral candidates is set for 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26 at Latino Health Access, 450 W. Fourth St., according to the O.C. Register.
The forum, sponsored by Voice of OC, the non-profit health agency and other groups, will focus on youth issues.
Six candidates are seeking the post in the November election, including incumbent Miguel Pulido and Councilman David Benavides. Continue reading
The Orange County Taxpayers Association PAC has dropped a mailer in support of Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido into local mailboxes today. The mailer touts Pulido’s record of “restoring Santa Ana’s fiscal health without raising taxes.” Continue reading
Actions Speak Louder Than Words: Councilmen Benavides & Sarmiento Are Bad for Labor and for Business!
I wrote previously about how Council Members Benavides and Sarmiento didn’t share with the Orange County Labor leaders that they did a ton of contracting out to private companies this year, like street sweeping, parking enforcement, and emergency medical transportation – killing hundreds of union jobs. But they were given the labor endorsement by the failed political labor staff over at the OC Labor Federation, Teferi Gebre and Julio Perez, who didn’t review their anti-labor voting records. As the stumbling “Santa Ana Spring” movement continues to unimpress, it is becoming obvious that David Benavides, the bogus revolution’s candidate for Mayor of Santa Ana, is going to lose on Nov. 6. He is barely campaigning. He is using recycled signs and he has yet to send out any campaign mailers. His campaign appears to be centered on Facebook ads and ubiquitous blog comments by his number one supporter, Art Lomeli, a resident of Orange Park Acres.
Benavides, and his number one Council ally, Michele Martinez, were born here. Benavides hails from East Los Angeles, according to his bio. Martinez was raised here in Santa Ana, but apparently wasn’t born here as that information is absent from her own bio. But she most certainly was born somewhere in the U.S. Continue reading
