There are quite a few key races coming up in the November 6, 2012 General Election, here in Santa Ana.
I have written dozens of posts in recent weeks about many of the candidates for the City Council, the SAUSD School Board, and the Rancho Santiago Community College District. After much deliberation, here are my endorsements:

Santa Ana residents have been voting via absentee ballots for about a week. During that time Assemblyman Jose Solorio has mailed a letter to all the voters in support of Mayor Miguel Pulido. And Santa Ana’s Firemen and Paramedics have also been featured in a mailer in support of Mayor Pulido.
Santa Ana Council Ward 3 Candidate Eric Alderete sent out a nice mailer the other day. So did Councilman Vince Sarmiento and Ward 5 candidate Roman Reyna (the infamous mailer that featured Reyna wearing a clip on tie). Continue reading
“After a long time, through many difficulties, under the enthusiastic help of effort and money from donors and Buddhists in many places, especially Council Member Santa Ana, Bao Quang Temple was officially inaugurated on Sunday morning, with the spacious, majesty and the splendor, before hundreds of religious clergy, visitors and community members,” according to Nguoi Viet.
Mayor Miguel Pulido was there. So was Ward 5 Council candidate Karina Onofre. They were joined by Santa Ana Mayor Pro Tem Claudia Alvarez, a candidate for the Rancho Santiago Community College District’s Area 3, and Santa Ana Council Member Vince Sarmiento. Assemblyman Jose Solorio has always been a staunch supporter of Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido. He stepped that up a notch this week sending a personalized letter to every voter in Santa Ana, asking them to vote for Pulido on Nov. 6.

David Benavides doesn’t pose with his wife anymore
Updated: Just checked. Still no mention of David Benavides’ wife or family on his campaign website. What is up with that?
I still remember when Santa Ana Council Member David Benavides first ran for the City Council, in 2006. Go back and look at his Smart Voter page and you will see that he proudly described himself as a “Husband of a Santa Ana school teacher, dad of a 4yr old daughter & 6mo old son.”
But take a look at Benavides’ mayoral campaign website and you will find no mention whatsoever of his family. And his campaign Facebook page also makes no mention that he is married and that he has kids. His Council Facebook page likewise omits any mention of his family, as does his personal page. Click on his “profile pictures” and you get several face shots of Benavides – and no family pictures. Even his official City Council bio omits any mention of his wife and children. Continue reading

Santa Ana mayoral candidate George Collins is best known in town for one thing – he always brings a video camera along, wherever he goes. He brought his camera early in September to the Connect to Council Santa Ana Council Candidates Forum.
The footage of the Council candidates was marred by poor sound, which was the fault of the event organizers and the facility, not Collins, but his mayoral candidate footage came out pretty sharp. You can see it atop this post. Continue reading

The Santa Ana 2012 Fiestas Patrias parade ran for about an hour and a half today, starting at 4 pm. I got there a few minutes late and missed Mayor Miguel Pulido, who was apparently riding in a Wells Fargo stagecoach, but I caught everyone else.
Above you wil find a slideshow of the politicians and the floats, and everything else. The parade featured men on horseback, someone in a bear costume, native dancers, and even a couple of ninjas.

Until last night I had never attended the “El Grito” event at Santa Ana’s annual Fiestas Patrias. Who knew I was missing out on an unbelievable spectacle?
Thousands of Mexican Americans filled Santa Ana’s Fourth Street, facing a huge stage at the end of the street, near the Northgate Market. A moderator introduced our city’s leaders at 8 pm, as Mayor Miguel Pulido and his family took the stage, along with Santa Ana Mayor Pro Tem Claudia Alvarez and traitorous Council Members Vince Sarmiento and David Benavides. The latter is running against Pulido in November and Sarmiento is supporting him. Continue reading
I am hearing that Santa Ana Council Member Vince Sarmiento appears to be having buyer’s regret when it comes to upstart Santa Ana mayoral candidate David Benavides. Apparently Sarmiento has told others that while he has endorsed Benavides he is not actively campaigning for him. But the damage is done – endorsing the clueless, bumbling Benavides is simply inexcusable.
Sarmiento is running for re-election this year, in Santa Ana’s Ward 1, against Estela Amezcua, a Santa Ana educator. She is not related to Al Amezcua, the failed Santa Ana mayoral candidat who, like Sarmiento, is also backing Benavides. Continue reading
One of the first things that Santa Ana mayoral candidate David Benavides said at this week’s candidate forum was “I have a question for you. Are you okay with the status quo?,” according to the O.C. Register.
That is laughable! Benavides was groomed for office by the man he is now trying to take down, Mayor Miguel Pulido. And he has spent the last six years voting lockstep with him on just about everything.
Consider what Benavides did the last time term limits came up. We didn’t get mayoral term limits in that instance, instead we got Measure D – which extended the Council terms by four more years! It was a complete bait and switch.
