Mayor Pulido and Lady Gaga Work Together to Oppose Sexual Violence and Bring Awareness to the Cause

Mayor Miguel Pulido recently had the honor of meeting Lady Gaga as the super star artist took part in a panel discussion on the global significance of building compassionate cities along with His Holiness the Dali Lama during the US Conference of Mayors in Indianapolis. A victim of sexual assault at the age of 19, Lady Gaga emphasized the importance of working with young people to develop kindness and compassion.

As part of her efforts to stand against sexual violence, Lady Gaga has joined Vice President Joe Biden on his “It’s On Us” initiative to end sexual assault on college campuses. Gaga’s Oscar-nominated song “Til It Happens To You” is the track she co-wrote and recorded for The Hunting Ground, the 2015 documentary film about sexual assault on campuses. Continue reading→

The City Council is reportedly scheming to dump Cavazos if Martinez gets elected in Nov.

Apparently several Santa Ana City Council members are scheming to get rid of our overpaid City Manager, David Cavazos, if Santa Ana City Council Member Michele Martinez is successful in her campaign for the First Supervisorial District, in the upcoming November Primary Election, according to one of our City Hall pajaritos.

The plan, which appears to be the work of City Council Member David Benavides, is to convince the rest of the City Council to replace Martinez on the City Council, should she move on to the O.C. Board of Supervisors, with Planning Commissioner Phil Bacerra. He would then join Benavides and three other City Council Members, and Mayor Miguel Pulido, in voting to fire Cavazos. Mayor Pulido cited our progress at this year’s State of the City address

Santa Ana’s longtime Mayor, Miguel Pulido, invited me to sit at his table yesterday as he delivered his 19th annual State of the City address, at the Bowers Museum. This is an annual event sponsored by the Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce. The proceeds of the event are used to fund various youth programs run by the Chamber of Commerce.

The room we were in was packed, which is always the case at these events. We were served a bizarre Americanized version of chilaquiles which was heaped on a slice of sauteed ham and included corn tortilla chips (with no chili seasoning), scrambled eggs, shredded Monterey jack cheese and cilantro. No salsa was served. There were also mini muffins, cream cheese and what looked like raspberry jam. Continue reading→

Santa Ana’s City Manager wrongfully accused Council Member Martinez of sexual harassment

The depravity of Santa Ana’s overpaid City Manager, David Cavazos, seemingly knows no end. A private investigation, by the law firm Atkinson, Andelson, Loya, Ruud & Romo, which was initiated after Mayor Miguel Pulido and Council Member Michele Martinez complained about Cavazos in an email to City Attorney Sonia Carvalho, on Sep. 27, found that Cavazos failed to disclose a romantic relationship with a Santa Ana employee until a year after the fact, and that his complaint of sexual harassment by Martinez was without merit, according to the O.C. Register.

While the investigative report did not indicate that Cavazos violated the city’s personnel policies, Pulido rightfully said that Cavazos’ behavior exposed the city to millions of dollars of potential liability. Pulido intends to continue to go after Cavazos, which we applaud.  Continue reading→

Mayor Miguel Pulido will recognize Dr. Erlinda Martinez, the president of Santa Ana College (SAC), who recently announced she will retire in June of this year. Her retirement marks the culmination of a career in education spanning over four decades. Dr. Martinez has worked at five community colleges and served as president of Santa Ana College for the last 11 years.

President Obama proposes to contribute $125M to the OC Streetcar project

The proposed OC Streetcar is one milestone closer to becoming the county’s first modern light-rail system, after President Barack Obama included $125 million for it in his proposed federal budget for the 2016-17 fiscal year, according to the O.C. Register.

The OC Streetcar project still needs to come up with another $20 million dollars. OCTA officials believe they can do so from state programs or local state tax dollars.

The streetcar will have 10 stops in each direction concentrated in Santa Ana’s Civic Center area running to the eastern edge of Garden Grove. Continue reading→

The OCTA responds to Mayor Pulido regarding the pending bus line changes in Santa Ana

The OCTA’s CEO, Darrell Johnson, responded in writing to Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido regarding the Proposed 2016 Bus Service Plan, on January 8. The OCTA is considering getting rid of the bus lines 51, 145, and 76 that serve the people of Santa Ana.

The problem that the OCTA is contending with is that bus ridership has gone down quite a bit. That may be due in part to the large number of immigrants who have left Santa Ana, heading to other cities and states and even returning to Latin America.

Council Members Sarmiento, Amezcua, Tinajero and Reyna approve a pay increase for top city executives

Santa Ana City Council members Angie Amezcua, Roman Reyna, Vince Sarmiento and Sal Tinajero voted on Tuesday evening this week to approv a 2.5 percent salary increase this fiscal year for their executive management staff, as well as another 2.5 percent increase in July 2016, according to the Voice of OC.

Mayor Miguel Pulido and Councilwoman Michele Martinez rejected the pay raise for the top city executives while City Councilman David Benavides was absent – as he is on his honeymoon having just married his Parks and Rec Commissioner, Erika Carranza, this weekend. Continue reading→

The Sacramento Democrats are looking forward to punking the OC GOP

The OC GOP’s Chairman, Fred Whitaker celebrated the Republican takeover of the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) that took place this week when Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido, a moderate Democrat, was replaced by Lake Forest Councilman Dwight Robinson, a Republican.

But Whitaker’s celebration might be very short lived. A well-placed source told me today that the Democrats in Sacramento are livid about the GOP’s shenanigans – which were engineered, allegedly, by none other than former Anaheim Mayor, turned lobbyist, Curt Pringle , on behalf of the oil industry.
