“The Orange County District Attorney (OCDA) has endured years of unethical and inaccurate web ‘reporting’ by various staff members of the Voice of OC.

The latest occurred this afternoon during my conversation with Adam Elmahrek, who is on staff with the Voice of OC.

As many of you may know, the Orange County Register is no longer available online to casual web browsers.  You have to be a subscriber to read their online articles.  They deleted their smart phone application and are not available on the Kindle. 

So what are your options?  Well, you could buy a digital only subscription, but that will cost you $37.80 every 5 weeks, which comes to a few cents over a dollar a day. Continue reading→

Regular OCP Blog readers have observed we usually preface anything we use from the Voice of OC as attributed to the “union-funded” Blog.  It’s important to understand that the Orange County Employees Association at least partially funds their operation, although no one’s ever learned how much — the union won’t announce it and there are no web links between the two.  The Voice does not sell advertising, and lists sponsors including the AP, Californians Aware, HealthyCal.org, California Watch and PBS SoCal.  Per its website, it appears to have at least seven staffers at its Santa Ana office.

Did the O.C. Register have to lay off award-winning reporter Yvette Cabrera?

“Ten years after California’s Orange County Register named Yvette Cabrera a news columnist after the newsroom’s Latino Task Force complained that the paper’s white, conservative columnist wasn’t the “cross-section of columnist’s voices” the Register needed, Cabrera has been laid off,” according to the Maynard Institute, which was founded almost four decades ago to promote diversity in the news media through improved coverage, hiring and business practices.

Cabrera won the David McQuay Award for Best Columnist award at the annual Orange County Press Club Awards Gala on July 20, 2011.  She wrote for the Register for 13 years, according to Media Moves. Continue reading→

The Santa Ana Police Department is pleased to announce that Chief PAUL M. WALTERS, along with Chief ROBERT GUSTAFSON, Orange Police Department, will receive the Media Champion Award during the 18th Annual Mental Health Community Events Luncheon. OJ Blogger Greg Diamond ripped Santa Ana’s safe city ranking but was silent about Irvine’s ranking

My colleague, Sean Mill, wrote a post earlier this week regarding the lack of attention paid by the O.C. Register, and in particular by their Santa Ana beat reporter Andrew Galvin, to the recent Forbes ranking of Santa Ana as the “4th Safest City in the U.S.” The Register briefly noted Santa Ana’s ranking in an article about the FBI crime data that was used by Forbes. But we found that the Register wrote an entire article on Dec. 13, touting a similar story, when the City of Irvine was ranked as the Safest City in the U.S. by an obscure entity (as compared to Forbes) – CQ Press.

The Santa Ana ranking was heavily criticized by the Liberal OC’s Chris Prevatt and by Orange Juice blogger Greg Diamond. Neither of them had anything negative to say about Irvine’s ranking, and Prevatt’s colleague, Dan Chmielewski, even wrote an entire post praising Irvine’s ranking. Diamond and Prevatt were silent about that too. Continue reading→

The Voice of OC’s Community Editorial Board is loaded with power elites

Did you know that paid Republican consultant Matt Cunningham is now writing so-called “community Editorials” on the Voice of OC?  That’s right.  Apparently he is part of the Voice of OC’s new Community Editorial Board.    I discovered this when I saw his byline on a post defending Anaheim Councilwoman Kris Murray, who got caught, by the Voice of OC, casting a City Council vote earlier this year to approve a report by a subsidiary of Willdan Group, a consulting firm that employs her as its senior vice president, city records show.

According to the Voice of OC’s “About Us” page, “First and foremost, Voice of OC focuses on accountability in government, not the process of government.”  And their stated mission is “To hold government agencies, elected officials and other power brokers in Orange County accountable through investigative news coverage. And to be a catalyst in the community for a robust and sophisticated discourse on local politics and government.”

It is hard to imagine who Cunningham fits into that equation.  This is the guy who outed victims of molestation by Catholic priests, while he was being paid to shill for Monsignor John Urell – a man of the cloth who ran interference for molester priests.  Cunningham posted an unredacted legal document – that he should not have had access to, on the failed “Friends of Urell” website, and in the process he outed the molestation victims, whose names appeared in the court document. Are O.C.’s political blogs still a force to be reckoned with?

Are Orange County’s political blogs still a potent force in local politics?  Some of them have apparently already peaked and are now headed downhill, while others are continuing to develop new readership.

The Orange Juice blog, which was Orange County’s first political blog, has changed substantially since Vern Nelson took over as their Editor/Publisher late last year.  But they remain Orange County’s only multi-partisan blog, with a bullpen of Republican and Democratic bloggers.  Their traffic has remained fairly consistent since Nelson took over.  They are averaging over 40,000 visits a month, along with over 70,000 page views. Build PBS SoCal Online – free event in Santa Ana today

Time: Saturday, April 16 · 3:30pm – 6:30pm
Location: Future PBS SoCal TV Studio at 3080 Bristol St., in Santa Ana

We are inviting you to help build the Southern California public media online presence much like the Amish pastime of barn raising. Your ideas and participation in thoughtful discussions about what public media means to Southern California are needed, instead of hammering and pushing up walls. Come have fun rolling up your sleeves and contributing!

Attending will give you an opportunity to see and check into the PBS SoCal studio on foursquare day and collectively envision a unified presence for PBS SoCal. You don’t need to be a web developer to be included, we are looking for educators, students, locally active bloggers, filmmakers, and PBS lovers. There will be beer, pizza, fun giveaways, opportunities to volunteer, a special screening, and other great public media enthusiasts to meet and greet. The studio is still under construction as is the website so bring your imagination. There will be wifi (and power outlets) for live blogging and tweeting.

As part of the PBS SoCal online redesign we are looking for more ways to include our audience and better collaborate with the PBS stations KVCR and KLCS around local content. We are starting small to give everyone who attends a chance to participate in this first of several intimate gatherings. You will be able to participate again as the project continues. Our goal is to strengthen PBS SoCal’s public media engagement through ongoing collaborations with the public: i.e., you.

Where to park:

Free parking for this event can be found in the parking garage across from the Hilton garage. When you turn into the business complex, go to the end of the road and turn left. There will be someone at the back entrance to the garage to greet you and show you the way.

The Orange County Register has invited some of OC’s foremost social media experts to speak at a meetup during the first-ever Social Media Day (June 30) at its headquarters, 625 N. Grand Avenue in Santa Ana,  from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. If you are utilizing social networking to connect yourself or your business with communities of interest, you won’t want to miss this event. The event is free and open to the public.

Community- and social-minded organizations such as CHOC and the Anaheim Ducks will also have a booth presence at this event.
