Mexicanisimo to host menudo fundraiser for Relampago del Cielo

 Santa Ana’s Relampago del Cielo is having a Menudo Breakfast Fundraiser on Sunday, April 18, from 9 am to 12 pm, at the Mexicanisimo Restaurant, located at 2325 First St., in Santa Ana.  A donation of $5 is requested.

Dancers will be performing, from the regions of Yucatan and Veracruz, at 11 am.  There will also be door prizes, including a Las Vegas getaway valued at $500 and a performance of Relampago del Cielo valued at $250.

Relámpago del Cielo Inc. (RDC) , a 501(c)3 non-profit organization is celebrating it’s 35th Anniversary. Enthralled by the music and movement learned in classes taught by Ms. Rosie Peña at Santa Ana College, a handful of her students resolved to join forces in expanding their newly discovered appreciation of the folklore of Mexico. Lupe Moreno curses in Spanish at Minuteman protest in Santa Ana today

The Minutemen showed up to protest today at the Mexican Consultate’s office in Santa Ana, at 7 a.m.  They were led by Lupe Moreno, a Republican activist who lives in Santa Ana.

In the video above, Moreno resorted to calling the mother of Naui Huitzilopochtli, the videographer, a “puta,” or whore.  He then rightfully wonders what sort of Christian Moreno is.

Moreno is known for her right-wing politics and supposed evangelical Christian values.  Continue reading→

Minutemen protesting at the Mexican Consulate in Santa Ana on Wednesday

The Minutemen are in an uproar because the City of Santa Ana decided to hold this year’s Fiestas Patrias event on September 11.  They are protesting tomorrow, March 31, at the Mexican Consulate in Santa Ana , from 7am to 9am.  The Consulate is located at 828 North Broadway, in downtown Santa Ana.

Counter-protesters will be there as well.

Normally the Fiestas Patrias event is held around the middle of September, but in order to hold the event on a weekend, the City of Santa Ana opted to start the event on Sep. 11, which of course coincides with the terrorist attack our nation suffered when members of Al-Qaeda destroyed the Trade Towers in New York.  Over 300 Mexican nationals died in that event.  The Minutemen either don’t know that or they don’t care. Mexican President Benito Juarez’s birthday anniversary celebrated in Santa Ana

Apparently there was a celebration recently in Santa Ana in honor of Benito Juarez, the famed Mexican President who was indigenous.  He was born on March 21, 1806.

In the picture above, which is courtesy of Miniondas, you can see some of the folks who were at the event, including Santa Ana Mayoral candidate Alfredo Amezcua, who is pictured on the left.  He is standing next to Mike Gonzalez, who ran for the SAUSD School Board last year.  They are standing near Alejandra Garcia Williams, the new Consul of Mexico, in Santa Ana.

The Mexica Movement and the Colectivo Tonantzin present: Mexican New Year, celebrating Nican Tlaca Anahuac Heritage, on Saturday, January 30th 2010 at the Centro Cultural De Mexico, located at 310 West 5th St., in Santa Ana.

Speakers Include: Gaby Trujillo, Scott Celtic Knot, Arturo Tolenttino, Gema Suarez, Nelyollotl Toltecatl, Carlos Cordova, Citlalli Citlalmina Anahuac, Olin Tezcatlipoca and special guest speaker, Enrique Morones from Border Angels, who will speak on the 2010 Caravana For Human Rights Event Program.

Janet Napolitano says the system worked

Embattled Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is allegedly denying that ICE immigration raids are occuring in Santa Ana

A local insider has indicated that Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez is getting ready to issue a press release denying that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids are going on in Santa Ana.  This despite numerous eyewitness accounts to the contrary.

A Sanchez staffer leaked the news about the release and indicated that Sanchez has talked to Homeland Security and ICE and they have denied the raids. 

However, considering that Homeland Security allowed numerous party-crashers to invade a recent White House dinner, and they also allowed a known terrorist to fly to our country, with no bags, on Christmas, it is hard to take them at their word.  That is particularly true given that the Director of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, insisted to the press that the “system worked” after the aforementioned terrorist failed to blow up a jet that was landing in Detroit. Bowers Museum showing the film El Principio this Thursday, for free

The Bowers Museum continues their Latin American Feature Film Series at this Thursday, January 7th, from 2:00pm – 5:00pm, with a showing of the film El Principio (1972).  This is a movie about a small village struggling to survive as Mexican Revolutionaries and Federales struggle to dominate the countryside.

There is no cost to attend!

How many young people will be deported in Santa Ana if Congresswoman Sanchez doesn’t stop the ICE raids?

The recent Immigration and Customs Service (ICE) immigration raids in Santa Ana have come at a very bad time – just as U.S. Census workers are starting to conduct outreach to area immigrants.

Only one local politician can stop these raids.  That would be Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez, who serves on the Congressional Homeland Security Committee.

“In the 111th Congress, Rep. Sanchez is taking a leading role in securing America’s borders with Mexico and Canada. This Congress she has held and continues to hold hearings and briefings on the U.S. response to the drug related violence that has plagued most of the Mexican side of the border. She has appeared countless times on CNN, C-SPAN, FOX News, and MSNBC to discuss the importance of a coordinated and efficient U.S. response to the violence. She has also met with Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to provide guidance on critical issues, including combating human, weapons, and drug trafficking and ensuring interagency cooperation on national security issues,” according to Sanchez’ website. So you partied a bit too hard last night and woke up with a dire need for…a steaming hot bowl of menudo.  But where can you buy the best menudo in Orange County?

For those of you who have no clue, menudo is a traditional Mexican soup that is said to be especially good when you are, well, hung over.

But Gustavo Arellano, over at the OC Weekly, says there is more to menudo than meets the eye, “menudo is so much more than boiled cow guts or something to soak up the booze that fueled your previous night. Menudo is a socio-historical lesson in a bowl: the fat, pale kernels of pozole have nourished Mesoamericans since time immemorial; the use of tripe and not the better parts of a cow a testament to its status as a poor person’s meal. Menudo is delicious, the trinity of firm pozole, chewy tripe and fiery, blood-red broth producing a comforting, fatty flavor.” Continue reading→

The Neighborhood Housing Services of Orange County, El Salvador Park and Recreational Center and the Artesia-Pilar Neighborhood Association cordially invite you to attend  La Posada, on Friday, December 11, 2009.  The event starts at 5:30 p.m. and ends at 8:00 p.m., at El Salvador Park and Recreational Center, located at 1825 W. Civic Center Drive.

The Posada procession will promptly begin at 6:00 p.m.  Local entertainment will follow.  Food for Sale will benefit the after-school Adventures Program and the Artesia Pilar Neighborhood Association.

Memorias de un Mexicano

The Mexican Consulate in Santa Ana invites you to their “Mexican Festival of Cinema,” at the Bowers Museum, on Thursday, Dec. 10, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

This Thursday’s film is “Memorias de un Mexicano,” which was filmed in 1950.  The remastered, edited version of Salvador Toscano’s film about the Mexican Revolution will be screened. Continue reading→

Mexican Consul Carlos Rodríguez y Quezada leaving Santa Ana early

“Mexican Consul Carlos Rodríguez y Quezada is retiring from his post in Santa Ana on Monday, his spokesman Agustin Pradillo Cuevas said today,” according to the O.C. Register.

Quezada has been controversial, to say the least.  He replaced a Consul who was very popular, and who fought for the rights of Mexican immigrants.  The problem with Quezada is that, from the first day in his office, he was an elitist.

Apparently the Mexican government has taken note about his unpopularity – and now he is being replaced, by Alejandra Garcia Williams, according to Gustavo Arellano, over at the OC Weekly’s Navelgazing blog.  Continue reading→
