Bi-Partisan Legislation to Reopen Trade Office in Mexico Passes Final Legislative Test

SACRAMENTO, CA: Legislation to help boost California’s exports to Mexico cleared its final legislative hurdle today, passing off the Senate Floor with unanimous support.

SB 928, authored by Senators Lou Correa (D-Santa Ana) and Bob Huff (R-Diamond Bar) would direct the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (“GO-Biz”) to establish a California trade office in Mexico City by January 1, 2016. Continue reading→

The Bowers Museum is proud to present a number of wonderful Latino programs in August, which showcase the diversity of the Latino community. The Bowers Museum is located at 2002 N. Main St. in the heart of Santa Ana. All events take place in the Norma Kershaw Auditorium. Student tickets are only $5.

On Thursday, August 14, join award-winning lecturer Jacqueline Hahn for An Evening in Buenos Aires: The “Good Air,” the Paris of South America. Madame Hahn will take you on a delightful trip to Buenos Aires. Explore the rich history, geography, architecture, sprawling avenues, parks, museums, and cafés of this enchanting city. Santa Ana residents apparently got pretty riled up over Mexico’s World Cup victory against the Croatians. According to the Santa Ana CopWatch Facebook page at least 30 Santa Ana Police Department cars showed up at Bristol and McFadden and started closing up streets in reaction to the spontaneous victory celebration.

The fan reaction reportedly included marching up and down Bristol Street and cruising. The latter, in particular, is frowned upon by the SAPD. Continue reading→

The attorney for Isidro Garcia, aka Tomas Medrano, the man accused of kidnapping a Santa Ana girl when she was 15, raping her and holding her captive for 10 years vigorously denied the charges this week, questioning why the now 25-year-old woman would wait until now to come forward, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The defense attorney, Charles Frisco Jr., mused that it didn’t make sense for her to suddenly come forward now, after a decade together. He speculated it might have had something to do with marital problems, saying the couple was in the process of splitting up, according to CNN.

This is a fascinating case in that it involves Mexican nationals – and social mores in Mexico are and have been quite different from what we believe here in the United States. Celebrate Mother’s Day today, starting at noon, at the Santa Ana Mini Mall, which features over 45 swap meet style stores and is located at 3412 Westminster Ave, in Santa Ana.

Community Alert: 15th Annual Cinco de Mayo Festival Features Big Name Talent In First City Produced Event

SANTA ANA, CA – The City of Santa Ana’s 15th Annual Downtown Cinco de Mayo Festival kicks off Friday, May 2 with carnival rides starting at 6 p.m. The street fair continues all weekend in Santa Ana’s beautiful historic downtown on Fourth Street on Saturday, May 3, from Noon to 9 p.m. and Sunday May 4, from Noon to 8 p.m. This year, the Festival will feature fifteen great performances on the main stage in addition to the great food, games, arts and crafts, and opportunities to shop and get information about art, activities, events and programs.

On Saturday, May 3, the highly popular Los Horoscopos de Durango will be performing on the main stage. A key treat for the community and the region is a special appearance by the Coach for the All Star Soccer team from Mexico that will be competing at the World Cup next month in Brazil. Coach Miguel Herrera, also known as “El Piojo,” will be taking questions from youth soccer players on the main stage on Sunday, May 4. Mercury Poisoning Linked to Use of Face Cream

The Orange County Health Care Agency warns against the use of face creams that appear to be homemade or imported from Mexico due to potentially high levels of mercury. One case of mercury poisoning associated with use of these products has recently been identified in Orange County, and several others are under investigation.

The face cream claims to lighten skin, fade freckles and age spots, and treat wrinkles and acne. Air samples taken from the cream had more than 50,000 times the safe limit. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not allow mercury in drugs or cosmetics, expect under very specific conditions which these products do not meet. Continue reading→

Join El Centro Cultural de Mexico for their 5th Annual San Patricios commemorative and educational event.

They will have Keltic/Irish and Indigenous/Mexican food, folk music from both cultures and a documentary about the San Patricio struggle.

The Saint Patrick’s Battalion (Spanish: Batallón de San Patricio), formed and led by Jon Riley, was a unit of 175 to several hundred immigrants (accounts vary) and expatriates of European descent who fought as part of the Mexican Army against the United States in theMexican–American War of 1846-8. Most of the battalion’s members had deserted or defected from the United States Army.

Free Las Posadas event at the Bowers Museum set for Dec. 21

The Bowers Museum is hosting a special free holiday event – Las Posadas, on Saturday, December 21, 2013, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at their North Parking Lot.

Las Posadas is a traditional Mexican Christmas Celebration re-enacting Mary and Joseph’s journey as they seek shelter in Bethlehem. This event will feature traditional music, dance and food and live entertainment by the Guitar ensemble of OCCTAC (Orange County Children’s Therapeutic Arts Center) and Cantamerica. AN AMBER ALERT HAS BEEN ACTIVATED STATEWIDE AT THE REQUEST OF THE WASHINGTON STATE POLICE

Elizabeth Romero was abducted on Dec. 4, 2013, from Kennewick, WA and her suspected abductor, Eduardo Flores-Rosales, a 19-year old Hispanic male who stands 5′ 9″ tall and weighs 200 pounds, may be headed for Mexico, according to authorities.

Romero stands 5′ 3″ tall and weighs 130 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes and was last seen wearing a white tank top, dark pants, a backpack and a pink purse. Continue reading→
