Should Santa Ana’s Cinco de Mayo and Fiestas Patrias be run by volunteers?

Did you know that Santa Ana’s popular Cinco de Mayo and Fiestas Patrias festivals used to be run by local businessmen and volunteers?  That was before the City of Santa Ana decided to hire a promoter, MX Live, to run these events.

But is MX Live really doing a good enough job to justify this corporate takeover?  Check out their website,their Facebook Page and the City’s website, and you will find that there is no mention of this year’s Fiestas Patrias, which are coming up in mid-September – just a few weeks from now.  What gives? Controversial film about a Lesbian couple to screen at the Yost tonight

Include this in your OC Pride celebrations this weekend: a screening of director Raul Fuentes’ film Todo El Mundo Tiene A Alguien Menos Yo (Everybody’s Got Somebody But Me), a film that deals with a torrid romance between a 30-something book editor named Alejandra and a free-spirited teen named Maria. It will be showing this Saturday at the Yost Theater, followed by a Q&A with the director, according to the OC Weekly.

A reception for the director will precede the event at 6 pm at the theater. Tickets for the reception and screening are $15, and limited to the first 100 reservations. For tickets, visit HERE. Continue reading→

Suspect in 1992 Homicide Extradited to Orange County

SANTA ANA, California – (July 24, 2013) – Leonardo Pimentel-Sanchez, a fugitive who eluded law
enforcement for more than 20 years, was returned to Orange County on Tuesday, July 23, from Mexico City
where he had been held since his arrest in Tijuana on November 16, 2012.

Pimentel-Sanchez is a suspect in the murder of Cari Ann Parnes who was discovered deceased in an
orange grove in Irvine on March 26, 1992. Parnes’ cause of death was attributed to a skull fracture due to

Santa Ana’s Mexicanismo Nightclub is hosting a “Gran Baile-Kermes” on Saturday, July 20, 2013.  A Kermes is a Mexican word for “carnival or bazaar.” “Baile” means “dance.” The fun starts at 4 pm.

Santa Ana Police Department Advisory: Victim of tragic crime incident has prosthetic leg and truck stolen

Synopsis:

On November 26, 2010, Juan Hernandez was the victim of a violent gang crime in Santa Ana that resulted in the loss of his left leg. Investigation into the incident identified the suspect as Jose Luis Berruette. The investigation disclosed Jose Berruette fled Santa Ana immediately after the crime(s). It is believed Jose Berruette has been living in Mexicali, Baja Mexico. The Santa Ana Police Department’s Gang Detail is holding an active Felony Warrant of Arrest for Jose Berruette’s apprehension. Santa Ana Police Department Advisory: U.S Marshals assist Santa Ana Homicide Detectives in capture of wanted murder suspect

Synopsis

On 2/20/2009 at approximately 1224 hours, officers responded to a shots fired call at 100 W. Memory Lane with one victim down. Upon arrival, they found the victim, identified as 18 year old Julio Cesar Zavala lying on the ground in the Main Place Mall parking lot. He was suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper torso. Witnesses stated a second victim, who was in the vehicle, fled the scene on foot into the mall. Santa Ana Fire Department Paramedics responded to the scene and transported the victim to UCI Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries. Continue reading→

The exhibit exemplifies the cultural heritage of Mexico and celebrates the artistry of its people. Google chose to honor Cesar Chavez on their website today – and I was quite disgusted by that.  He was not a supporter of immigrants and his supporters should stop trying to pretend otherwise.

CSU STUDENT TRAVEL BAN TO MEXICO LIFTED

SACRAMENTO, CA – The California State University (CSU) announced today that it is changing its existing ban on education abroad and academic exchange programs with Mexico, in response to inquiries from Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, Assembly Speaker John Perez and State Senator Lou Correa (D-Santa Ana), who chairs the Senate Select Committee on California-Mexico Cooperation.

In a September 27 letter to the Senate President pro Tem and the Assembly Speaker, CSU Chancellor Emeritus Charles Reed announced that he had directed his staff to “begin review of the current situation in Mexico and its potential effects on [CSU] students.” In a letter released today by Chancellor Timothy White to the legislative leaders, Chancellor White announced that his office will, “evaluate, on a case-by-case basis, requests for student programs and academic-based travel in Mexico to areas that do not have an advisory in effect.” Continue reading→
