Learn about the Mexica New Year today, at El Centro Cultural de Mexicoe

Mexica New Year

If you celebrated the New Year on January 1, you might be surprised to know that the indigenous people of Mexico celebrate the New Year on a different day, on Feb. 2 to be exact.  El Centro Cultural de Mexico is hosting a Mexica New Year Event on February 2, 2013.  There will be a Spanish language presentation from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm then 5:00 pm to 8:30 pm they will have a presentation in English.  The event will be located at 313 N. Birch Street, in Santa Ana.

  • Olin Tezcatlipoca will speak on the theme is “Revival of Our Heritage By How We Live Our Lives”.
  • Citlalli Citlalmina Anahuac will speak on the women leaders of Cemanahuac.
  • Amoxeh will explain why the New Year is celebrated Feb. 2.

GANG MEMBER SENTENCED TO 50 YEARS TO LIFE FOR SHOOTING-MURDER OF INNOCENT RESTAURANT PATRON IN SANTA ANA

SANTA ANA – A gang member was sentenced today to 50 years to life in state prison for the unprovoked shooting-murder of an innocent man outside of a restaurant in Santa Ana. Ivan Sanchez, 23, Santa Ana, was found guilty by a jury Sept. 27, 2012, of one felony count of murder with a sentencing enhancement for the personal discharge of a firearm causing death. Support the Santa Ana Noche de Altares at the Catrina Ball on Oct. 13

You can support this year’s Santa Ana 2012 Noche de Altares (Day of the Dead/Dia de los Muertos) event by attending the first annual Catrina Ball at Bistro 400, at 9:30 pm.  Bistro 400 is located at 400 W. 4th St., in Downtown Santa Ana, by the Federal Courthouse.

El Centro Cultural de Mexico and Calacas are among those who are organizing the Noche de Altares event.  They apparently turned down a $10,000 donation from Downtown, Inc., the association that manages the money that is taken from Downtown Santa Ana property owners and spent by a select board.  Bravo to El Centro and Calacas for turning down this dirty money! Mexican Independence?

If you don’t know who Theo Hirsch is, then you’re missing out on one of Downtown Santa Ana’s most compelling artists – a guy who is creative not only with visual arts but also with written and spoken words and with music.  Hirsch has his own blog and while he doesn’t post to it very often, when he does it usually means he has something to say.

The other day I got an email from Hirsch about a new post he had been working on.  That post is now done.  It  looks like he drew inspiration from the recent Fiestas Patrias event held in Downtown Santa Ana, ostensibly in celebration of Mexican Independence. Politicians, ninjas and a bear show up at the 2012 Fiestas Patrias parade

The Santa Ana 2012 Fiestas Patrias parade ran for about an hour and a half today, starting at 4 pm.  I got there a few minutes late and missed Mayor Miguel Pulido, who was apparently riding in a Wells Fargo stagecoach, but I caught everyone else.

Above you wil find a slideshow of the politicians and the floats, and everything else.  The parade featured men on horseback, someone in a bear costume, native dancers, and even a couple of ninjas.

Sarmiento and Benavides squirm as Pulido shines at a memorable El Grito

Until last night I had never attended the “El Grito” event at Santa Ana’s annual Fiestas Patrias.  Who knew I was missing out on an unbelievable spectacle?

Thousands of Mexican Americans filled Santa Ana’s Fourth Street, facing a huge stage at the end of the street, near the Northgate Market.  A moderator introduced our city’s leaders at 8 pm, as Mayor Miguel Pulido and his family took the stage, along with Santa Ana Mayor Pro Tem Claudia Alvarez and traitorous Council Members Vince Sarmiento and David Benavides.  The latter is running against Pulido in November and Sarmiento is supporting him. SANTA ANA – A gang member was sentenced today to 40 years to life in state prison for the unprovoked shooting-murder of an innocent man outside of a restaurant in Santa Ana. Ricardo Guerra Rocha, 19, Santa Ana, who was 17 years old at the time of the crime and charged as an adult, was found guilty by a jury June 27, 2012, of one felony count of murder, one felony count of street terrorism, and sentencing enhancements for the vicarious discharge of a firearm causing death by a gang member and criminal street gang activity.
