Sarmiento and Nguyen MIA as residents oppose a homeless shelter in Santa Ana

Santa Ana is part of the First District of the Orange County Board of Supervisors and our elected representative is Janet Nguyen, who currently is preoccupied with running for the 34th State Senate District. So preoccupied apparently that she has blown off, repeatedly, the Santa Ana residents and business owners who are fighting the O.C. Supervisors’ decision to open up a huge homeless shelter at 1217 Normandy Place, in Santa Ana.

Nguyen isn’t the only local politician who has been MIA on this issue. Santa Ana Councilman Vince Sarmiento represents that area and one of the ladies who is fighting the shelter, Dora Lopez, tells me that he too has refused to meet with local residents and business owners. This is the same useless Sarmiento that pulled papers to run for Mayor but thankfully withdrew from that race.

The OC Board of Supervisors approved the $3.6-million purchase of the 23,220-square-foot industrial warehouse at 1217 Normandy Place back on July 15,2014, according to the L.A. Times. Continue reading→

Santa Ana Police Chief Carlos Rojas and Commander Ruben Ibarra will be speaking at a special meeting of the Lacy Neighborhood on Friday, July 25, 2014 at 6:00 pm. They will be making a presentation about Santa Ana crime statistics in the Lacy Neighborhood.

Longtime Santa Ana Com Link member found dead surrounded by over 50 cats

Sad news to report. Longtime Com Link member and Santa Ana neighborhood activist Rita Corpin, a 72-year-old , was discovered by her gardener around 11 p.m. Tuesday on the porch of her home in the 1400 block of South Rosewood Avenue in Santa Ana, police said, according to CBS News.

Corpin retired in 2010 from decades of teaching world history at La Quinta High School in Westminster, according to the OC Register. Corpin was not hurting for money. She retired with an annual pension of $120K per year, according to an online source.

I spoke to Santa Ana Planning Commissioner Sean Mill about Corpin’s death. Mill recalled that she was actually one of his teachers. The West Floral Park Neighborhood Association is proud to present: Open Garden Day and West Floral Park Bazaar on Saturday, May 17, 2014 (10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.)

This is an opportunity to view the exquisite gardens of residences in the West Floral Park and Jack Fisher Park neighborhoods located in North Santa Ana. Tour and enjoy gardens, listen to garden experts (these talks are FREE) and visit the West Floral Park Promenade, featuring a Garden Bazaar with artisan items for sale, kids’ gardening center, food trucks, and vintage car collection.

We hope you have time to visit our lovely gardens on the tour. The gardens are the stars of the event; however, there is lots of fun on the West Floral Park Promenade.

In promoting the City being named “Tree City USA” for the 15th consecutive year and to celebrate Earth Week, Santa Ana Public Works will host a Community Beautification and Arbor Day. Participants will plant trees, remove graffiti, learn about water conservation and keeping storm drains clear to the ocean. Free compost will also be provided by Waste Management along with a tree giveaway to the first 100 pre-registered participants. FLORAL PARK ANNOUNCES 22nd ANNUAL HOME & GARDEN TOUR

SANTA ANA, CA, February 1, 2014 – The Floral Park Neighborhood Association (FPNA), one of the most architecturally distinctive neighborhoods in Orange County, will celebrate its 22nd annual Home & Garden Tour on April 26-27, 2014. The event will showcase the broad range of architectural styles and gardens that are the hallmark of the neighborhood. Over 100 neighborhood homes are now listed in the Santa Ana Register of Historic Properties. Since the first Home & Garden Tour in 1993, more than 200 homes and gardens in Floral Park have been opened to visitors from the United States and Europe.

Located in the northern tip of Santa Ana, Floral Park and its homes have been featured in publications such as The Orange County Register, Orange County Home, Orange Coast, Mary Engelbreit’s Home Companion, Southern California Home and Outdoor, The LA Times, and OC Metro. Aging adults still run Santa Ana even though the population is much younger

People over 65 make up only 6.8% of the City of Santa Ana, according to the U.S. Census – but they still rule this town.

Here’s how that works. Take a look at the Santa Ana Neighborhood Associations – they are mostly made up of adults over 45. The average member is closer to 65.

We live in the youngest city in Santa Ana. Over 30% of our population is under 30! There are 56,000 kids enrolled in the SAUSD’s K-12 schools (source – SAUSD)- and that does not include the Santa Ana schoolchildren who go to private schools or are in the Garden Grove Unified School District. Neighbors push for a green strip while Bristol St. businesses try to survive

A group of business owners along Bristol Street have banded together to see if together they can find a way to remain on their portion of the corridor, which the city plans to widen from four to six lanes,’ according to the O.C. Register.

If you at all drive through Santa Ana you know the area in question. It is a strip of businesses on the East side of Bristol, just south of 17th. These include a martial arts dojo; a McDonald’s and an optometrist.

What makes this case interesting is that the Washington Square Neighborhood Association has gotten involved and there has been a bit of a ruckus as the neighbors want to see these businesses torn down so they can get a promised green strip. Continue reading→

Cheap Date to play at the 4th Annual Park Santiago Concert in the Park

The 4th Annual Park Santiago’s Concert in the Park is set for Saturday, August 24, 2013, from 4:00 pm until 11:00 pm, at the Santiago Park Baseball Diamond, located at 601 E Memory Ln., in Santa Ana. This is a family friendly neighborhood Concert in the Park hosted by the Park Santiago Neighborhood Association, and open to everyone!

The awesome local cover band Cheap Date will be performing. Cheap Date includes Mary Walters (who is married to our former Chief of Police and City Manager Paul Walters) and her family – including Ellen Hirota, backup and occasional lead vocalist; Tim Hirota, lead guitarist, vocalist and manager; Peter Hirota, drummer; Ann “Annie” Spencer, backup vocalist and tambourine; and Dominic Hirota, lead vocalist, as well as longtime band members second guitarist Jeff Halili and bassist Brian Satterfield, according to the O.C. Thanking Rob Cook

My heart is breaking today with the sad news that longtime Santa Ana neighborhood and community activist Rob Cook is terminally ill. His wife Janet posted this information on the Santa Ana Citizens Yahoogroup this week and also indicated that he can no longer use his computer.

Rob and I didn’t always see eye to eye but I always admired his moxie and his dedication to our community – in particular he had a very big heart and no one cared more for our homeless. He loved to ride his bike all over town and he quite often participated in local civic events. He had an open mind and I enjoyed working with him last year, for the last time, as we tried together to stop Santa Ana’s bogus Measure G. Continue reading→
