Our readers select Alicia Rojas as our 2012 Santa Ana Woman of the Year
Our readers have spoken and their choice for the 2012 Santa Ana Woman of the Year is the inimitable Alicia Rojas, the President of the United Artists of Santa Ana, an “organization committed to nurturing the growth and preservation of the Arts in Santa Ana by empowering the local arts community through initiatives focusing on economic partnerships, professional development and networking.” Congratulations Ms. Rojas!
Ms. Rojas was also very actively involved with Santa Ana Occupy in 2012 and she helped stop the sale of the historic Santora Arts Building to Santa Ana Council Member David Benavides’ church, Newsong of Irvine.

Santa Ana’s artists have only themselves to blame for their problems
Joining the Occupy movement was a very bad idea for Santa Ana’s artists
“A core group who’ve been in the Santora for years are growing increasingly worried that building owner Mike Harrah will push them out as rents in Santa Ana’s gentrifying downtown move upward,” according to the Voice of OC.
I met with many of these artists back before they formed a group called the Artists Village Alliance of Santa Ana (AVASA). I had advised them to join together and represent their community with a unified voice. Unfortunately, AVASA quickly was taken over by the most radical of the downtown artists – and they stupidly got involved with the Occupy movement.
Today the artists have no voice – and it is their own damn fault. Attacking Harrah continues their stupidity as he has no contractual reason to keep the artists who are not paying their rent. Continue reading
Occupy Orange County to target our courts on Friday, Jan. 20
Just when we thought the Occupy movement in Orange County was dead, or at least on its way out, it is back. Apparently there is going to me a national protest at over 200 courthouses on Jan. 20 (the press release is below), including Santa Ana, the Orange County seat, which has federal and state courts, as well as a federal appeal court.
Occupy’s main beef this time is a U.S. Supreme Court decision that struck down those provisions of the McCain–Feingold Act that prohibited all corporations, both for-profit and not-for-profit, and unions from broadcasting “electioneering communications.

Santa Ana may have saved a million dollars by rejecting Occupy’s camping bid
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is admitting he goofed by allowing his city to be occupied. The price tag for the clean up and eviction could top one million dollars, according to the L.A. Times.
“Every cent that’s going to go into the park is coming from taxpayer dollars, and that could mean less programming when we get to springtime at our rec centers,” said Jon Kirk Mukri, general manager for the Department of Recreation and Parks.
While the Santa Ana City Council voted to support the Occupy movement they were smart enough to reject their camping request. Thank goodness for that! Our city is already broke. The last thing we need is to blow a million cleaning up Occupoo! Continue reading
What we learned from Occupy Santa Ana’s failed Wal Mart flash mob
“A two-minute flash mob by Occupy Santa Ana protesters did not seem to have the intended effect, leaving some Wal-Mart employees scratching their heads,” according to the L.A. Times.
“Afterward, as the protesters drove away, a handful Walmart employees gathered outside the store’s entrance. One woman called the protest “stupid.” Another said it was “disrespectful,” according to the O.C. Register.
The OC Weekly article about the lame flash mob got a lot of comments – and most of them were anti-Occupy. And according to reporters and to commenters on Facebook, at most ONE shopper cheered the flash mob – and only ONE worker had anything kind to say about them. FAIL! Continue reading

Occupy Irvine begins today, Oct. 15, at 10 am
Occupy Irvinebegins today, October 15, at 10 am, at Irvine’s City Hall, located at 1 Civic Center Plaza, in Irvine, at Harvard and Alton. Initial speakers will include both UCI professors & disenfranchised citizens. Protesters are being urged not to bring any aerosol spray paint or weapons.
According to the OC Weekly, Oct. 15 has been referred to as a Global Day of Revolution by groups around the country protesting the stranglehold corporations wield over the government.
Occupy Irvine won’t be limited to Irvine residents (most of whom are more interested in occupying BMWs and Audis). A contingent of artists, poets and musicians from Santa Ana will be traveling to Irvine to participate in an Open Mic forum led by Santa Ana’s own Theo Hirsch. Continue reading
