OCTA Offers 30-Day Youth Summer Pass

Teens encouraged to “De-Zombify” this summer by taking OCTA buses to Orange County attractions

ORANGE – The Orange County Transportation Authority is encouraging local teens to “De-Zombify” this summer by getting out into the sunshine and exploring Orange County’s many attractions using the OCTA Youth Summer Pass.

For the past 14 years, OCTA has provided a summer bus pass for those 18 and younger as part of a youth ridership program.

For the first time, it’s being offered to youth ages 6-18 as a 30-day pass. A pass costs $20 and is valid for unlimited rides for 30 consecutive days between June 1 and Sept. 30. Continue reading→

Future is on Track for OC Streetcar Project

OCTA, city officials and community leaders gather to mark milestones toward getting the project in Santa Ana and Garden Grove operational as soon as 2019

SANTA ANA – Transportation, city and community leaders gathered at the Santa Ana Regional Transportation Center on Monday afternoon to mark a number milestones toward the construction of Orange County’s first modern streetcar.

The OC Streetcar project, planned to travel through the cities of Santa Ana and Garden Grove, has advanced significantly in recent weeks. Plans for the streetcar project have been approved by city councils in both cities and received environmental clearances from the Federal Transit Administration. Continue reading→

NEWS ADVISORY: OC Streetcar Project Celebrates Milestones

WHAT: Officials from the Orange County Transportation Authority, Santa Ana and Garden Grove will mark important milestones leading toward the construction of the OC Streetcar. Elected leaders and stakeholders will be recognized for their ongoing support of the project and updates will be provided.

The four-mile long streetcar is planned to run from the Santa Ana Regional Transportation Center through Downtown Santa Ana and the Civic Center, operating through important employment, restaurant and retail centers along Fourth Street and Santa Ana Boulevard. It will also travel to a new multimodal transit hub at Harbor Boulevard and Westminster Avenue in Garden Grove. The project is planned to be operational by the end of 2019. Continue reading→

OCTA Seeks Applicants For Measure M Taxpayer Oversight Committee

The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) is seeking qualified volunteers to serve on the Measure M Taxpayer Oversight Committee (TOC).

The eleven-member committee monitors OCTA’s use of Measure M funds and ensures that all revenue collected from both Measure M1 (M1) and the Renewed Measure M2 (M2) is spent on voter-approved transportation projects. The independent committee was formed after the passage in 1990 of Measure M, a half-cent sales tax to fund transportation improvements in Orange County. Continue reading→

OCTA Buses Going to the Dogs … for Training

This free event helps service animals and trainers learn to navigate public transit

ORANGE – Come fetch a bus ride and bring Fido along, too.

Service and therapy animals in training are invited to join their handlers in making bus rides a familiar and relaxed experience during Orange County Transportation Authority’s Service Animal Training Day on Saturday, April 11.

Service dogs will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with large crowds, loud noises and unfamiliar sights and sounds while boarding, riding and exiting an OCTA bus to the Downtown Disney District and the Anaheim Garden Walk. Roundtrip training buses, not in service to the public, will depart every 20 minutes from the ARTIC station in Anaheim. Continue reading→

Grant Will Help Search for O.C. Sidewalk Gaps

The $163,333 state grant will allow OCTA to establish a countywide inventory of sidewalks

ORANGE – The Orange County Transportation Authority has been awarded $163,333 in Active Transportation Program grant funds to complete the Orange County Sidewalk Inventory Project.

The grant is from the Southern California Association of Governments, in partnership with the California Department of Transportation. It allows OCTA to establish a countywide inventory of sidewalks that will identify the gaps, obstructions and amenities that may block pedestrian activity and access. Continue reading→

Angels Express Returns for 2015 Season

Popular service returns to Angel Stadium, beginning April 2 and 3

ORANGE – Baseball fans will again be able to hop aboard the Angels Express to quickly get to and from Angels games this season, beginning with the first pre-season home games against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday and Friday, April 2 and 3.

Survey Shows Vast Majority of OCTA Bus Riders Satisfied With Service

Study of bus riders’ opinions indicates 90 percent are pleased with transit service

ORANGE – Results of a new customer satisfaction survey show that an overwhelming majority of bus riders in Orange County are pleased with the fixed-route bus service that transports nearly 1 million people each week to work, to home, and to retail and entertainment destinations countywide.

This week, the Orange County Transportation Authority Board reviewed results of the 2014 Fixed Route Bus Services Customer Satisfaction Survey, which showed that nine out of 10 bus riders say they are satisfied with OCTA’s bus service. Continue reading→

The event will mark the completion of the four-year $297 million project that runs through the cities of Garden Grove, Westminster, Seal Beach, Los Alamitos, Long Beach and the community of Rossmoor.

Annual Measure M Public Hearing Set for Feb. 10 for Taxpayer Oversight Committee

Half-cent sales tax is driving force behind local transportation improvements

ORANGE – The Measure M Taxpayer Oversight Committee is conducting its 24th annual public hearing on Measure M, Orange County’s half-cent sales tax for transportation improvements at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 10.

Measure M, administered by the Orange County Transportation Authority, was approved by voters in 1990 and renewed by a vote of nearly 70 percent in 2006. Each year, the committee seeks public input on how funds are being spent. Continue reading→

TAXI CAB DRIVER TO BE ARRAIGNED FOR HIT-AND-RUN CRASH THAT KILLED PEDESTRIAN IN NEWPORT BEACH

NEWPORT BEACH – A taxi cab driver is scheduled to be arraigned Monday for crashing into a pedestrian, resulting in the victim’s death, and driving away from the scene. Ronald Aviles, 56, San Clemente, is charged with one felony count of hit and run with permanent injury or death. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of four years in state prison. Aviles is out of custody on $50,000 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned Monday, Feb. 2, 2015, at 8:30 a.m. in Department H-1, Harbor Justice Center, Newport Beach.

At approximately 3:00 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2015, Aviles is accused of driving his taxi van southbound on East Coast Highway. He is accused of crashing into 23-year-old Travis Marton, as the victim was crossing East Coast Highway westbound at the intersection of Newport Coast Drive in Newport Beach. Aviles is accused of unlawfully failing to stop his vehicle and failing to render assistance to the injured victim. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Continue reading→

Streetcar Project in Santa Ana and Garden Grove Keeps Rolling with City Council’s OK

OCTA will take over leading the implementation of the new transportation alternative

ORANGE – A proposed streetcar in the cities of Santa Ana and Garden Grove took a step forward this week when the Santa Ana City Council approved the project environmental impact report, which now sets the stage for the Orange County Transportation Authority to take the lead on project implementation.

From the Santa Ana Regional Transportation Center, through Downtown Santa Ana and the Civic Center, the streetcar would operate along 4th Street and Santa Ana Boulevard. The route would continue along the Pacific Electric right-of-way and connect to a new multimodal transit hub at Harbor Boulevard and Westminster Avenue in Garden Grove. Continue reading→
