County Commemorates One-Year Anniversary of The Courtyard, County’s First Year-Round Homeless Shelter

Santa Ana, CA (October 5, 2017) — Today, the County of Orange commemorated the one-year anniversary of its first County homeless shelter, the Courtyard Transitional Center in Santa Ana. Board of Supervisors Vice Chair Andrew Do, First District, who was instrumental in bringing the Courtyard to fruition, visited with staff and residents at the shelter to signify the milestone.

“The Courtyard was a response to a homelessness crisis in the Santa Ana Civic Center, and it has made a significant impact on the lives of the individuals who have taken advantage of the resources provided,” said Supervisor Do. “We have seen tremendous success in the last 12 months, with more than 153 people from the Courtyard connected to housing and more than 125 who are employed. I have no doubt that we will continue to see people coming to the Courtyard as the first step in ending their homelessness.” Continue reading→

Civic Center Pedestrian Traffic Rerouted Due to Construction

Santa Ana, CA (October 5, 2017) — Pedestrian traffic has been rerouted surrounding the Building 16 construction area to ensure the safety of those walking through the Civic Center in Santa Ana.

The County has installed fencing along the Building 16 construction area and is installing additional easy-to-follow directional signs to help pedestrians navigate through the Civic Center. The Promenade (also known as the Walk of Honor), which previously extended from Ross St. to N. Broadway, will be closed until late 2019. A map of the impacted area is available at bit.ly/2gbFnQk. Invasive Aedes Mosquitoes Increase in Numbers as they Spread Across Orange County

Garden Grove, CA. The Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District (OCMVCD) has seen a significant increase in the presence of the invasive Aedes mosquitoes within Orange County. The mosquito species Aedes aegypti (yellow fever mosquito) and Aedes albopictus (Asian tiger mosquito) are not native to the county and are capable of transmitting debilitating viruses including dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever and Zika. While these viruses are not currently transmitted locally, transmission could begin if someone infected abroad returns to Orange County and is bitten by the invasive mosquito. Vector Control officials are urging residents to take the necessary precautions to reduce mosquito breeding and to avoid bites from these aggressive day-biting mosquitoes.

The District’s surveillance and increased calls from residents confirm that in 2017, the presence of the invasive Aedes mosquitoes has increased in acreage by 330% within Orange County since last year. Continue reading→

SANTA ANA, Ca. (Sept. 12, 2017) – The Orange County Board of Supervisors today unanimously approved a resolution to support enhanced patrol efforts along the Santa Ana Riverbed and County flood control channels.

SANTA ANA, Calif. – John Wayne Airport (JWA) anticipates a busier-than-normal travel period from Thursday, August 31 through Tuesday, September 5 during the Labor Day holiday weekend. More than 169,000 passengers traveled through JWA during the same period in 2016 with the busiest travel days being the Thursday and Friday before and the Tuesday following Labor Day.

Community: A Message from OCMVCD: Residents Urged to Take Precautions Over Weekend as More West Nile Virus Activity Detected

As the holiday weekend approaches, the Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District (OCMVCD) reminds residents to use mosquito repellent and remove standing water to prevent further spread of West Nile virus (WNV).

Year-to-date, there are 172 WNV-positive mosquito samples in 19 Orange County cities. A total of 23 dead birds have tested positive for WNV this year. Nine confirmed human cases have been reported. Continue reading→

Safe Surrender Saves Lives in Orange County

Orange County, CA – A healthy baby was safely surrendered to Anaheim Fire & Rescue (AF&R) Station 1 late on Tuesday afternoon. The baby and mother were assessed by AF&R’s Nurse Practitioner and Firefighter/Paramedics before being transported to a local hospital for care and observation. The baby is currently in the care of the County of Orange Social Services Agency’s Children and Family Services (CFS) division. Continue reading→

ORANGE COUNTY OFFENDER TREATMENT PROGRAM DECREASED RATE OF RECIDIVISM BY 500% FOR 2015-2016 PARTICIPANTS

SANTA ANA, Calif. – Pacific Educational Services (PES) released an evaluation indicating a 500% reduction in the rate of criminal recidivism for last year’s participants in the Orange County Offender Treatment Program (OC-OTP) in Santa Ana. The evaluation detailed the positive impact OC-OTP had on participants who completed the program without termination, primarily offenders dealing with drug usage and/or possession. Continue reading→
