OCTA Gears Up For Bike To Work Day
Public is encouraged to join OCTA for a bike rally on May 16

ORANGE – Commuters looking for ways to improve their health, help the environment and cut the cost of driving are invited to join OCTA for a bike rally on national Bike to Work Day, May 16.

OCTA will be hosting a bike rally from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m. Participants will meet at the Orange Depot at 7:30 a.m. and join more than 50 cyclists for a 3-mile ride to OCTA Headquarters. Continue reading→

May is Orange County Bike Month, according to the OCTA, which states on their website that “Bicycling is an environmentally friendly, inexpensive, and enjoyable way to get around Orange County.Please support our efforts to get you out of your car and onto a bike. Even for a day! It’s healthy, fun and we’re offering plenty of prizes if you pledge your support.”

The Measure Q Bond Committee is business as usual…

The new membership for Santa Ana College’s Measure Q bond Committee includes former RSCCD Trustee Mark McLaughlin -didn’t he receive campaign funds from college contractors who he will be overseeing now? I smell conflict of interest!

And why was Carolyn Cavecche, a former Mayor of Orange, appointed to this Committee? I thought only Santa Ana residents could vote for Measure Q? How can she now be part of this committee? Did I miss something?

Also how could they not find a single student or senior representative? Unbelievable. The RSCCD Trustees may include more Latinos now but nothing has changed at the district.

Darrell Johnson Begins Post as OCTA Chief Executive

Johnson replaces long-time transportation veteran Will Kempton who retired Feb. 28

ORANGE – Darrell Johnson began his new post today as the chief executive officer of the Orange County Transportation Authority.

OCTA is the countywide transportation agency with 1,500 employees and an annual budget of $1 billion. Under the direction of a 17-voting member board of directors, Johnson is responsible for planning, financing and coordinating Orange County’s freeway, street and rail development, as well as managing bus services, commuter-rail services and paratransit service for people with disabilities. The race to see who will replace Frank Barbaro as the new Chair of the Democratic Party of Orange County (DPOC) is down to two candidates – longtime activist Jeff LeTourneau and paid consultant Henry Vandermeir.

The DPOC is at a crossroads – Orange County is less red than ever. The Democrats picked up another legislative seat this November when Sharon Quirk-Silva won in the 65th Assembly District, with capable help from Vandermeir’s wife Lois, who is also a paid consultant.

There is nothing wrong with being a paid political consultant. I do some of that work too. But should paid consultants be heading up political party organizations? I don’t think so. Continue reading→

Santiago Canyon College Awarded $1.25 Million Upward Bound Math and Science Grant

O.C. College Benefits from a Trio of Grants to Boost STEM Programs

(Santa Ana)— Santiago Canyon College (SCC) recently got news that it was selected by the U.S. Department of Education to receive $250,000 annually in a five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education for its Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) program. The funds will help prepare high school students for post-secondary education programs that lead to careers in the fields of math and science. The program will make it possible for 62 students in Orange Unified School District to participate in a cohort model in which a group of students moves through all classes and phases of the program together.
