Help Scare Away Hunger by Building a Scarecrow in the Park
Organizations invited to compete in exhibition at Great Park Pumpkin Harvest
IRVINE – The Great Park is inviting local businesses and community organizations to create a scarecrow to help scare away hunger during the second annual Scarecrows in the Park event. The competition, presented by the Orange County Great Park and Second Harvest Food Bank, gives local businesses and community organizations the opportunity build and display unique scarecrow creations while providing support for a worthy cause. Teams can create their own imaginative scarecrow that showcases their organization’s spirit and mission, while at the same time supporting efforts to help alleviate hunger in Orange County. Will Irvine Mayor Beth Krom support naming the O.C. Great Park after Harvey Milk?
While everyone has been focusing on the ruckus between Santa Ana Mayor Pro Tem Claudia Alvarez and the Chase family, at last night’s special session of the Santa Ana City Council, there was one other controversial item on the agenda.
The Council named a city-owned plaza that is in the East End Promenade, formerly the Fiesta Marketplace. They chose to name it the Plaza Santa Ana.
An Irvine blogger ripped this decision and he questioned why the City Council did not name the Plaza after Harvey Milk, the gay San Francisco politician who was murdered by another Supervisor. Milk has since become an icon of the gay movement. Continue reading

Great Park to Host NFL Punt, Pass and Kick Competition
Young football fans compete for place in national contest
IRVINE –The Orange County Great Park is calling local boys and girls ages 6-15 to showcase their football talents at the NFL Punt, Pass and Kick (PPK) competition on Friday, August 19. Nothing sums up the “go to meetings, we know better than you” culture of Santa Ana’s infamous “Usual Suspects” quite like the “5-on-5” rules governing pick-up soccer games in our city’s parks. Well thanks to Councilman Sal Tinajero the City Council’s Parks, Recreation, Education and Youth Committee has taken a new look at the ordinance and is going to send it packing, much like the council did to the “Usual Suspects” who used to infect our city commissions.
The ordinance, which was pushed through doing the “Usual Suspects” heyday, limits the number of people that can play soccer in our parks to teams of 5 to a side. Traditionally soccer consists to 11 players on each team, but in soccer-crazy Santa Ana that is illegal in our parks! Somewhere former councilmember and anti-Chivas USA activist Tom Lutz is still smiling at the thought of the “5-on-5” rule. Continue reading
