Santa Ana Mayor Pro Tem Claudia Alvarez tried her best to stop the PBID (a property tax in Downtown Santa Ana that is used largely to promote bars and restaurants and to maintain and secure the area) at Monday night’s Santa Ana City Council meeting, but she could not muster any support from her colleagues.
Instead, “The issue will be taken up again in May, according to Councilman Sal Tinajero, who told the Voice of OC “because the city should be allowed to consider dismantling the district without threat of litigation at that time. The law governing the district requires council members vote annually on whether to continue the district.” Continue reading
The City of Santa Ana may act to keep sex offenders out of our parks!
I got a press release today from the O.C. District Attorney’s office, announcing that the City of Laguna Hills has become the latest city to consider an ordinance banning registered sex offenders from their city parks.
The City of Huntington Beach also just passed a similar ordinance. “City Council members at their meeting Monday approved the ordinance in a 4-3 vote with council members Connie Boardman, Joe Shaw and Keith Bohr dissenting,” according to the O.C. Register.
I have written a few posts asking why the City of Santa Ana hasn’t considered a similar ordinance, given that we have over 200 registered sex offenders living in our city. State’s Department of Water Resources Heeds State Assemblyman Jose Solorio’s Call to Pay OC for Flood Control Projects
Already arriving reimbursement funds will total $51.8 million by end of January
Anaheim – State Assemblyman Jose Solorio’s (D-Anaheim) pursuit to find more state resources for the cash-strapped County of Orange has led to a significant payout to the county by the State of California. Flood control “subvention” claims from Orange County to the state totaling approximately $80 million are on their way, with $51.8 million, representing six Santa Ana River claims, in county coffers by the end of January. These represent funds that had previously been stalled at the state for several Santa Ana River and main-channel project claims. Continue reading
The O.C. Supervisors are finally going after Assistant County CEO Rob Richardson, who is also a Trustee on the SAUSD School Board. “Nelson and Bates recommend demoting Assistant CEO Rob Richardson and revoking a 13.1 percent unjustified raise given to Deputy CEO for Infrastructure Alisa Drakodaidis,” according to the O.C. Register.
Why is Richardson in trouble? Check this out – “Richardson saw his pay increase 33.13 percent in just six months after he was promoted in January 2006 to assistant to the CEO, a position without any direct oversight of county departments or employees. Richardson draws a salary of $191,089.” Continue reading

Why should Santa Ana Occupy care about affordable housing?
Their leader is a wealthy lawyer who lives in Brea!
About 40 members of Santa Ana Occupy showed up at Santa Ana’s City Council last night. Thanks to them the meeting went on until midnight. In the end the City Council rejected their demand to camp out at night on city property.
That much you know by now – but did you know that the Occupy members also completely failed last night – when they were given an opportunity to help the “99%?”
That’s right. The City Council finally voted on an ordinance that would force developers to include affordable housing in their residential developments. Continue reading

UPDATE: The Santa Ana City Council rejected Santa Ana Occupy’s request to camp out in Downtown Santa Ana, according to O.C. Register reporter Andrew Galvin, who commented on his Facebook page. The Council meeting lasted until midnight but turned out to be an epic fail for Santa Ana Occupy, as we predicted earlier.
The Santa Ana City Council just got underway a few minutes ago. The Council Members are still giving away various awards and commendations. It could be awhile before Occupy Santa Ana gets to argue that the City should allow them to camp out at night…

UPDATE: Barely over 20 Occupy protesters marched at the Santa Ana Art Walk on Saturday, according to the OC Weekly. Obviously this is a very small movement…no doubt our Santa Ana City Council will take that into account on Monday night.
“Santa Ana’s City Council on Monday will undertake a discussion of the city’s no-camping ordinances in response to the Occupy OC movement’s wish to establish a long-term presence in the Civic Center,” according to the O.C. Register.
Santa Ana Council Members David Benavides and Michele Martinez put the 85B item on the agenda – forcing the rest of the City Council to consider allowing the Occupy movement to camp out overnight in Downtown Santa Ana.

This Saturday’s Santa Ana Art Walk, on Nov. 5, might be the biggest one ever. Not only does it coincide with the 9th Annual Noche de Altares (Dia de Los Muertos/Day of the Dead) event, we are also going to see the Occupy Santa Ana movement conduct a protest at 1:00 in front of the Bank of American on 4th and Main, for Move your Money Out Day. (B of A announced today that they are cancelling their monthly debit card fee increase, so perhaps folks won’t be moving their money out after all).
The Occupiers are then having a march from 6:30 to 8 through Downtown Santa Ana, where the Day of the Dead Altars will be set up, and then on to the Artists Village. They will end the march at the Santora Building, at the Studio del Sotano, with a Sangria party. Continue reading

I received a tip this week that forces allied with Orange Clerk-Recorder Tom Daly are looking for pictures of one of his Democratic opponents for the 69th Assembly District, Julio Perez, a labor consultant.
What sort of pictures? They want pictures of Perez riding a car in the Santa Ana parade. Not just any car – it was a car that was entered in the parade by the Institute for Mexicans Living Abroad, of which Perez is an elected board member (OC Weekly). Continue reading
I had lunch with a state legislator last week and he dropped a bombshell – apparently there are forces in the Democratic Party that are asking State Senator Lou Correa to consider taking back his old seat on the O.C. Board of Supervisors – and giving incumbent Supervisor Janet Nguyen the boot.
The last time I met with Correa, earlier this year, he said he was looking at the possibility of running for State Attorney General, but only if the incumbent were to run for U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein’s seat. Feinstein got cleaned out by Kinde Durkee so perhaps she might consider finally retiring. However if she runs again, where will that leave Correa? Continue reading
