The June 5 primary might be a disaster for O.C.’s Vietnamese candidates

The best candidate that Orange County’s Vietnamese community had going into the June 5 Open Primary, Westminster Mayor Pro Tem Tyler Diep, dropped out of the race for the 72nd Assembly District. That left two Vietnamese candidates vying for that seat – O.C. Board of Education Trustee Long Pham, a Republican, and Garden Grove Planning Commissioner Joe Dovinh, a former Decline to State voter who is now a Democrat.

Dovinh has “spent $6,699 during the March 18-May 19 reporting period, brining his total spending in the AD-72 race to $16,352. He has $5,493 left in his warchest,” according to the OC Political blog. They also reported that Pham “spent $62,675 during the March 18-May 19 reporting period, bringing his total spending in the AD-72 race to $106,072. He has only $1,412 left in his warchest.” Continue reading→

The dark side of Tom Fuentes, the deceased former OC GOP Chairman

Deceased former Republican Party of Orange County Chairman Tom Fuentes “scripted his funeral ritual last August with one of his former seminary classmates and refined it in the intervening months,” according to his longtime friend, O.C. Register columnist Frank Mickadeit.

As usual, when it came to Fuentes, there is more to the story.  The OC Weekly’s Gustavo Arellano scrutinized the list of guest speakers and attendees at Fuentes’ funeral and he found a gaggle of pedophile apologists:

*Giving the homily was the man who replaced Fuentes as communications director, Lawrence Baird. Baird was a notorious asshole to many sex-abuse victims, defended vile pedophile Michael Harris as “an icon to the priesthood” to the media even as the Orange diocese knew he was a pedophile rapist, and even once sued a sex-abuse victim for defamation (he lost). The Lincoln Club rejects most of the OC GOP’s Central County candidates

The Lincoln Club of Orange County’s State and Federal Political Action Committees have issued a primary election Orange County voter guide, and it is a stunning slap to the Republican Party of Orange County’s slate of candidates in Central Orange County.

Why would the Lincoln Club reject them?  Well, for starters, most of them are startlingly anti-Latino.  One of them, Robert Hammond, got rejected not once but twice – the Lincoln Club refused to endorse him for both the OC GOP’s 69th Assembly District delegation and the Orange County Board of Education, Area One. Martinez was on TV with Tran, but Arellano does TV with Republicans too

You have to love Gustavo Arellano’s hyperbole.  He reported this week that “I about spit out my Maker’s this evening when word came to me that SanTana councilwoman and 69th Assembly District hopeful Michele Martinez appeared on a Vietnamese-language channel here in Little Saigon, getting softball questions tossed at her by none other than former State Assembly member Van Thai Tran. Tran, the man who has long trashed Mexicans and tried to pit Vietnamese and Mexican voters against each other in a strategy only neo-Nazis and the Republican Party could love. Tran, the sworn enemy of Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez.”

Since when is Gustavo a Sanchez acolyte?  She is the biggest phony ever.  She was a Republican for most of her life before she switched to the Democratic Party, only after she got blown out in a race for the Anaheim City Council.  Sanchez not only switched parties, she also dropped her married name, which at the time was “Brixey,” and rediscovered her Latina surname, “Sanchez.” Continue reading→

New 69th A.D. poll shows Martinez, Daly and Moreno on top

A new poll of voters in the 69th Assembly District might be the reason that Orange County Labor and the OC GOP machine are trying to squeeze Republican candidate Jose Moreno out of the 69th A.D. primary.

According to the survey memo, “Democrats Tom Daly and Michele Martinez and Republican Moreno lead the pack.  Martinez leads all candidates among Latinos and leads Julio Perez, by 16 points. She also leads all candidates in Santa Ana – home to 60% of likely voters. Martinez is also likely to benefit disproportionately from the fact that Democratic women are among the most undecided subgroups in the district initially.  And when voters were read profiles of the three major Democrats and a shorter profile of Republican Moreno, Martinez moved into the lead.” Continue reading→

Why is the OC GOP joining with OC Labor in attacking a Republican candidate?

Chris Nguyen, a Republican blogger at the OC Political blog (a blog that promotes the OC GOP machine, not to be confused with the blog you are currently reading) who is also a staffer at Assemblyman Chris Norby’s office, launched a direct attack today on Jose Moreno (pictured above), the only Republican candidate for the 69th Assembly District.

Nguyen accused Moreno of violating the Hatch Act, which prevents most federal employees from running for partisan offices.  However, Moreno works for the County of Orange.  Nguyen tried to make the case that Moreno’s agency is funded by the federal government, but Moreno’s agency also receives funding from the State of California, and from local sources as well. Carlos Bustamante’s former boss at the County of Orange placed on leave

The placing of OC Public Works Director Jess Carbajal on administrative leave last week is just one of several personnel moves being made as county officials scramble to gain control over a department rocked by revelations that sexual harassment allegations against former executive Carlos Bustamante were not properly handled, according to the Voice of OC.

The Voice of OC also reported that Ignacio Ochoa, who now heads the department’s engineering division, will take over as interim head of the OC Public Works Agency. Continue reading→

O.C. Poltical blogger rips Moreno’s and Stroud’s lame ballot designations

OC Political blogger Chris Nguyen posted an article today poking fun at the top 10 worst ballot designations, pertaining to Orange County political candidates in the upcoming June primary.  His list includes a couple of Santa Ana residents – Lupe Moreno and Glen Stroud.  Both are Republicans who are running for the obscure Republican Party of Orange County (OC GOP) Central Committee, in the 69th Assembly District.

Who is Robert Hammond?

Robert Hammond got 34.5% of the vote in 2010, when he ran for the 69th Assembly District as the Republican nominee.  Incumbent Jose Solorio blew him out with 65.5% of the vote, according to Smart Voter.  Undeterred, Hammond is at it again this year.  This time he is running for the Orange County Board of Education, Area One, after he quit the race for the 69th Assembly District.  I believe he is also running for the 69th Assembly District OC GOP Central Committee.

An OC GOP insider gave me the scoop tonight on what really led to Republican Robert Hammond quitting the primary race for the 69th Assembly District – at the very last minute, last Friday, which was the filing deadline for that race.  Hammond ended up pulling papers for the Orange County Board of Education’s Area One.

What my source told me was pretty much what I expected.  Hammond did not come up with this scheme himself.  Apparently Supervisor Janet Nguyen and OC GOP Chairman Scott Baugh were the ones that advised him to leave the Republican Party of Orange County hanging, with no candidate in the 69th A.D. Hart announces he’ll run against Bustamante, as O.C.D.A. considers charges

Remember Charles Hart (pictured above, on the left)?  He ran for Mayor of Santa Ana in 2010, and lost, badly, when his Usual Suspect allies turned on him at the last minute.  They ended up voting for Al Amezcua, who got his tail kicked, despite spending a small fortune, by longtime Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido.

Hart has posted an article ripping the Santa Ana City Council, over on the new OC Political blog, because they voted to develop a Climate Action Plan to help improve the environment.

Hart also let slip, at the end of his article, that he is a candidate for the Santa Ana City Council.  Hart lives in Santa Ana’s Ward 3, which is currently represented by Council Member Carlos Bustamante, who used to work for the County of Orange, until allegations of sexual harassment compelled him to resign.  The Voice of OC reported today that Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas is now reviewing the matter.  Bustamante is clearly toast. Hammond enters the race for the O.C. Board of Education’s First Area

As reported in an earlier post today, Republican Robert Hammond has withdrawn from the race for the 69th Assembly District, according to the OC Political Blog.  He is running instead for the Orange County Board of Education, in the First Area, which is being vacated by the incumbent, Long Pham.

Hammond is an extremist social conservative.  He is anti-immigrant and anti-gay.  He would be very much like former O.C. BOE Trustee Alexandria Coronado, who got the boot the last time she ran, after she made anti-gay comments. Continue reading→
