Santa Ana’s Chapter One: the Modern Local restaurant is serving as a collection site today, Dec. 16, at 11 am, for items to donate to the local homeless. Chapter One is located at 227 N Broadway, in Downtown Santa Ana. Click here to like them on Facebook. The event was put together by Elsy Mejia and Maria Mejia.
In the struggle to find food and a safe place to sleep, homeless people find it difficult to acquire basic items such as soap, shampoo, deodorant, and toothbrushes–things we probably take for granted every day.
Without these items, simple hygienic activities such as brushing their teeth or washing their hands are not only challenging but often out of the realm of possibility. Continue reading

UPDATE: The Santa Ana Planning Commision voted 4-2 to approve the ordinance discussed below. Eric Alderete and Patrick Yrarrazaval were opposed. Sean Mill and Frank Acosta made and seconded the successful motion.
Santa Ana’s Planning Commission will be considering a proposed ordinance tonight, No. 2012-03, which will establish an Entertainment Permit that will be issued by the Santa Ana Police Department to local businesses that provide entertainment while also serving alcohol.
The main concern, as I understand it, is ensuring that nightclubs and restaurants in town are not allowing minors, 18 and under, in their establishments when alcohol is being served. Some of these venues, such as the Velvet Lounge, aggressively advertise the presense of 18 year old youngsters, ostensibly as a way to market to older clients who are trolling for youthful partners. We took a look at the the health and safety violations given to Downtown Santa Ana’s bars and restaurants by the Orange County Health Care Agency, after this year’s “Taste of Santa Ana.” The result? Pandemonium set in. Now we have looked up their violations again and guess what? Most of these restaurants are still a mess.
Remember that thanks to our lame Orange County Supervisors, in particular Supervisor Janet Nguyen, our County does not use letter health grades for bars and restaurants. Unless you look up these establishments in advance, here, you will have no idea what you are getting into.

Cleaning up caribou roadkill?
The loudest, crudest supporter of the Little Sparrow, at the Santa Ana Planning Commission meeting earlier this week, was a guy named Nathan Hittle, according to several eyewitnesses. Who is Hittle? That is quite a story actually.
Hittle is the head of the Downtown Santa Ana Restaurants Association. Don’t bother trying to find their website – they don’t have one. They are affiliated with Downtown, Inc., the organization that spends the money collected via the unethical Downtown Santa Ana PBID tax.
How did Hittle end up in such a lofty position? It is a very good question considering that in 2003 he was a Santa Ana Animal Control officer. Continue reading
The new Little Sparrow Cafe asked their supporters to show up at tonight’s Santa Ana Planning Commission meeting and they did, about fifteen of them. One after another they got up to talk about how nothing was happening in Downtown Santa Ana until they showed up. Then Planning Commissioners Sean Mill and Eric Alderete set them straight – there are businesses today in the Downtown area that have been there for decades.
Mill went on to remind folks that these businesses, owned primarily by Latinos, were ripped off by the PBID – and that money was used to prop up all the newcomers. The Little Sparrow fans immediately erupted in hoots and hollers until Alderete had to shut them up. Continue reading
Naseem Aflakian and Bruce Marsh of Santa Ana’s exclusive Floral Park neighborhood are looking to open an American Bistro called the “Little Sparrow,” that will “serve great bakery items for breakfast, crafted sandwiches for lunch, and candlelight dinners along with cocktails,” according to the Eat In OC Blog.
Aflakian and Marsh have raised over $25,000 for this venture via something called Kickstart, which appears to be an online funding mechanism. You can click here to see who has invested in their restaurant. Continue reading
