Dia de los Muertos at Fairhaven
Fairhaven’s annual Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) event, on Monday, November 2 at 6 p.m., keeps century-old tradition alive by combining ceremony and a celebration of life to commemorate lost loved ones.
At 6 p.m., a traditional memorial service officiated by Deacon Jerry De Santos and Deacon Luis Gallardo will take place followed by spirited entertainment and complimentary refreshments from El Indio Tortilleria. Continue reading

Friday, 10/16/2015, at 11:56 am, the victim called the Santa Ana Police Department to report his vehicle had just been stolen. The victim advised officers while inside a store in the 2500 block of South Main Street, he had left his keys, and his 7 month old child, in the vehicle. Continue reading
A driver of a stolen Honda Civic, while attempting to get away from the police this morning, at around 10:45 a.m., led them on a chase in the stolen car then on foot after he crashed the vehicle, near West Alpine Avenue and South Parton Street, according to the O.C. Register.
The incident resulted in a lockout at the nearby MacArthur Fundamental Intermediate School, located at 600 W. Alton Ave. The lockout was lifted at about 11:10 am today. Continue reading
Santa Ana School Police Department
This is an important message from the Santa Ana Unified School District. We have been informed by the Orange County Fire Authority that residents may be experiencing a smell of natural gas in certain areas of the city due to a routine procedure at a refinery in Seal Beach.
Normally, the procedure would not leave a smell; however, due to the low cloud cover this morning, the gas is unable to pass through. We have been assured that there is no immediate danger or need to evacuate students. Continue reading

UPDATE: The lockout has been lifted as of 11:10 a.m.
SAPD is searching a residential area near the area of MacArthur Fundamental Intermediate School for a suspect in a crime. As a precaution only, the school has been placed on a Lockout.

Ad-Hoc Committee Will Address Mental Health Services
(Santa Ana, CA) — An ad-hoc committee comprised of two members of the Board of Supervisors will examine gaps within the County’s mental health system and present recommendations to their colleagues early next year, Board Chairman Todd Spitzer, Third District, announced this week.
The committee was suggested by Vice Chair Lisa Bartlett, Fifth District, who will serve with Supervisor Andrew Do, First District. Bartlett requested that a committee be created to formally review and analyze long-term policy solutions for the delivery of public psychiatric services. Input and collaboration will be sought from County agencies, hospital representatives, the medical community and law enforcement. Continue reading

Award-winning Composers David Spear and Joseph Julian Gonzalez Lead Performance of Their New, Original Score
(Santa Ana, CA) The Film Fiesta is proud to take you back to 1928 this Sunday with the OC Premiere of this lost Dolores del Rio silent classic RAMONA with a new original score written and performed live by award-winning composers Joseph Julian Gonzalez (Misa Azteca) and David Spear (Ballet Robotique, The Rainbow War). This special screening takes place on Sunday, October 18 at 1pm at the Frida Cinema, located at 305 E. 4th St. in downtown Santa Ana’s historic Calle Cuatro.
In 1928, an emerging Hollywood starlet named Dolores del Rio took the nation by storm when she starred in Edwin Carewe’s silent film adaptation of RAMONA, Helen Hunt Jackson’s beloved tale of romance in Old California. Over the ensuing years, copies of the movie disappeared, and this important piece of film history was thought to be lost forever. Then, in 2010, a single print was discovered in a film archive in the Czech Republic. The film has been restored and preserved by the Library of Congress, and the intertitles were translated back into English. Continue reading

Santa Ana College Hosts Soldiers to Scholars Wine Tasting on November 5
Fundraiser Provides Services for Student Veterans
(Santa Ana, CA)— Stacy Palencia isn’t your average community college student.
At 29, she’s older than many of her classmates and her life experience is quite different. While many of them were attending high school, she was serving in the U.S. Navy in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. While at sea, she helped supply munitions for airborne missions. After returning to the U.S., she served shore duty for two years in Nevada and returned home to Orange County in 2012 with a back injury.
Now, in her second year at Santa Ana College (SAC), Palencia has worked hard to transition from active military service to civilian life. But, fortunately, she hasn’t had to make that transition alone. She said, “The SAC Veterans Resource Center (VRC) has been very helpful. It offers me and other veterans a quiet place to study, computers and printers to use, a book and graphic calculator loan program, academic counselling, help with financial aid and much, much more.” Continue reading

A crime scene on Parton and Washington, next to Willard Intermediate School left blood splattered on a wall and a 60 to 80 feet of a sidewalk.
Community activist Igmar Rodas noticed the blood and called the police. They said that a crime victim was chased to this point and set upon by a suspect who is now in custody.
This incident likely happened late on Oct. 12 or early on Oct. 13. Continue reading

SANTA ANA, Calif. – The Orange County District Attorney’s Office (OCDA) and the Santa Ana Police Department (SAPD) are seeking the public’s help identifying potential additional victims of a former Santa Ana High School (SAHS) science teacher charged with having sex with an underage female student in his classroom. Alvar Albert Gonzalez, 45, Santa Ana, is charged with one felony count of unlawful sexual intercourse and one felony count of possession and control of child pornography. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of three years and eight months in state prison and mandatory lifetime sex offender registration. He is out of custody on $20,000 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 15, 2015, at 8:30 a.m. in Department C-55, Central Justice Center, Santa Ana. Continue reading
A man with a knife robbed a business today in Santa Ana at the 3800 block of South Bristol Street at around 1 p.m., according to the O.C. Register.
The man demanded that an employee of the targeted business turn over an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspect took the money and fled from the crime scene. Continue reading

Gonzales-Solomon is among 59 outstanding elementary and middle school principals from across the nation and abroad who have been named as 2015 National Distinguished Principals (NDP) by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP). Gonzales-Solomon is principal of Madison Elementary School in Santa Ana, California. The NDPs will be honored Oct. 16 at an awards banquet at the Capital Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C., as part of a two-day program. Have you ever heard of the Parent Trigger Law? It was authored by a Democrat, Gloria Romero, but has become a tool for Republicans to turn public schools into charter schools. Locally this has come to the forefront at the Palm Lane Elementary School in Anaheim.
The Parent Trigger can only be used in low performing schools – and Santa Ana has a lot of those. SAUSD Trustee Cecilia Iglesias was involved in the Palm Lane effort as an employee of State Senator Bob Huff, a Republican in north Orange County. Now she has recruited a team of candidates to take over the SAUSD School Board.
The candidates include Angie Rosario Cano, Reyna Orozco and Marilyn Bernaudo-Delgado. Cano ran previously for the School Board in 2014. Continue reading
