Andrew Do gets sworn in as the First District Supervisor
Former state Sen. Lou Correa — who lost his bid for a seat on the Orange County Board of Supervisors to Andrew Do by a 43-vote margin — has officially sought a recount of last Tuesday’s special election, according to the L.A. Times.

Andrew Do’s defeat of former State Senator Lou Correa in the Jan. 27 First District Special Election has made history by creating a majority Asian Board of Supervisors here in Orange County.
Other Asian County Supervisors include Michelle Steel, a Korean-American who replaced John Moorlach after moving into Orange County from Los Angeles County, and Lisa Barlett, a Japanese-American who replaced Pat Bates. Both Moorlach and Bates termed out. Continue reading
Santa Ana police are investigating the death of a 40-year-old transgender man who died at 7:06 p.m. on Jan. 21, from complications related to an injection received at a “silicone party” in the city, according to the O.C Register.
The victim attended the party sometime in December at an unknown location in Santa Ana where she “received some injections in the buttocks area for cosmetic reasons,” said Corp. Anthony Bertagna, with the Santa Ana Police Department, according to KTLA. Continue reading
Janet Nguyen was just elected this past November to the 34th State Senate District but in two short years she will have a chance to challenge U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez in the 46th Congressional District.
Nguyen was elected to a four year State Senate term. She can run for her State Senate seat three times, for a total of 12 years of service. Sanchez has to run every two years but has no term limits. Continue reading
Orange County’s Point in Time Count of the Homeless

Fourth District staffers Scott Carpenter and Steve Spernak arrived at 4:00 a.m. at Victory Baptist Church on Magnolia and watched as nearly 200 volunteers arrived to begin registration and staging for the mornings Point-in-Time count of the homeless in OC.
Approximately a thousand volunteers staged at 5 community centers then fanned out to locations throughout the 800 square miles of Orange County to count the homeless at parks, train depots, industrial parks, alleys and malls along with encampments along rivers and creek beds. Continue reading

I have read comments on Facebook by supporters of Lou Correa that are openly blaming the voters in Santa Ana for Correa’s loss to Andrew Do in the First District Special Election. That is ridiculous.
There are a lot of reasons why people might not vote. You have to know, going into a Special Election, that the turnout will be low to begin with. But Latino voters in Santa Ana already were prone to not voting – they did the same thing in November when Jose Solorio lost to Janet Nguyen in the 34th State Senate election – which led to her abandoning the First District. First District Special Election Certified
Final ballot counting and official certification complete
SANTA ANA, CA – January 30, 2015 – Registrar of Voters Neal Kelley has just certified the official results of the Orange County Board of Supervisors’ First District Special Election held on January 27, 2015.
Total turnout from the election was 22.6% with 19% of voters casting their ballot by mail and 3.5% of voters voting in their polling place. In the 2007 First District Special Election overall turnout was 22.4%, vote-by-mail voting was 17.3% and polling place voting was 5.1%. Continue reading
The final votes have been tallied and apparently Andrew Do beat Lou Correa by 43 votes in the First District Special Election, according to the Orange County Registrar of Voters.
I suppose there might be a recount, but why bother? This election was lost when Correa, for whatever reason, did not attack Do. Instead Correa spent a small fortune on mailers that touted his public safety record. It was reminiscent of Jose Solorio’s failed campaign last year against Do’s old boss, Janet Nguyen, in the race for the 34th State Senate District. Continue reading

Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk
SANTA ANA, Calif. (January 30, 2015) – On Super Bowl Sunday, February 1, 2015, there will be lots of game day socializing that may include drinking. The California Office of Traffic Safety, Sheriff, Police and the CHP are urging football fans to choose sides now: drinking OR driving. If you plan on drinking on Super Bowl Sunday, designate a sober driver to get you home safely.
The Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk campaign encourages people to make plans ahead of time that will prevent them from getting behind the wheel of a vehicle after drinking. Everyone should be mindful that if you’re taking medication, whether prescription or over-the-counter, drinking even small amounts of alcohol can greatly intensify the impairment effects. A man was shot at around 4 pm in the driveway of the Park Terrace Mobile Home Park on Wednesday afternoon, at 4080 W. 1st St., in Santa Ana, according to the O.C. Register.
SAPD police officers detained five passengers in a gray vehicle near the scene of the shooting for questioning but the victim, who has not been identified, has not been questioned yet. He is listed in critical but stable condition. Continue reading
Orange County Ballistics Using Local Law Enforcement 3D Technology Press Conference
WHAT: The Orange County Crime Lab (OCCL) will introduce the Orange County Ballistics Using Local Law Enforcement 3D Technology (OCBULL3T) and announce the first 3D database cold-hit on bullets in California. The bullet database cold-hits recently connected two separate Anaheim Police Department cases involving firearms.
Though this was the first database cold-hit, the OCBULL3T system has provided several other bullet and cartridge hits in cases being investigated by numerous other agencies in Orange County. In addition to information about
the Anaheim Police Department cases, crime lab experts will discuss the OCBULL3T technology, its capabilities and the resources it provides to law enforcement agencies throughout Orange County. Continue reading

“It is with a Heavy Heart that I must share that Diego’s will no longer be as of the end of February…I want to thank the team who delivered the best service and product to our customers every single day. I would also like to thank the customers and fans of Diego’s as well. Your accolades and time you shared made our jobs enjoyable. Thank you to all the promoters and bands who roared in our hall and kept the walls thumping. We will fulfill all the commitments for February but will cancel all dates after the end of month.”
