REP. LORETTA SANCHEZ STATEMENT ON HUMAN RIGHTS DAY
WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (CA-46) today released the following statement in honor of International Human Rights Day, which marks the adoption of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
“Every year, International Human Rights Day reminds us of the work that still must be done in the global effort to protect human rights. As we get closer to a vote on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), we must acknowledge the egregious human rights violations that continue to be committed by the Vietnamese government. As the founder and co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on Vietnam, I have witnessed Vietnam make empty promise after empty promise that it will improve its human rights record. Enough is enough; we must put human rights before economic gain. Continue reading→
Immigrant rights activists Maria Zacarias and Theresa Dang were arrested on suspicion of resisting or delaying a police officer and on suspicion of being intoxicated in public, respectively, said Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna. They have been released, according to the OC Register.
Zacarias and Dang helped change checkpoints in Santa Ana when police agreed to allow unlicensed drivers 20 minutes to find someone with a license to whisk their car away from an expensive impound. The OC May Day Coalition said then that the previous policy unfairly targeted and profited off the undocumented community. The two went out to Friday night’s check point and offered to be on-spot drivers when the arrests happened, according to the OC Weekly.
My own research into the SAPD’s DUI checkpoints, a few years ago, revealed that they hardly ever caught any actual drunk drivers. They do however serve to hassle immigrants. Beyond that however there is a simple reason why the SAPD keeps running these ineffective checkpoints. Continue reading→
We thought that Santa Ana Councilman David Benavides was going to seek the Mayor Pro Tem nomination at tonight’s City Council meeting. However none of his colleagues on the City Council nominated him.
In the end it was Councilman Vince Sarmiento who was nominated and then selected as the new Mayor Pro Tem. This became possible after the previous Mayor Pro Tem, Sal Tinajero, opted not to retain the title.
As Mayor Pro Tem, Sarmiento will run the Santa Ana City Council meetings when Mayor Miguel Pulido is late to a meeting, leaves a meeting early, or is absent altogether.
This was an early Christmas gift for Sarmiento, who is going to be running for reelection in 2016. Continue reading→

Kandice Hawes, of OC Norml, told the Voice of OC that the group that campaigned for Measure CC is now considering legal options including suing the city, and starting a re-call of council member Vince Sarmiento and Mayor Pro Tem Sal Tinajero.

Jeb Brugmann, a renowned expert on Urban Strategy, will be making a presentation about an analysis he has prepared regarding Downtown Santa Ana’s economic potential for food, health and wellness, culture and recreation, on December 12, 2014, from 8:30 am to 10:30 am, at Santa Ana’s First Presbyterian Church, located at 600 North Main St., in DTSA.
Brugmann’s report concludes that the greatest available source of buying power for both retail and service operations in DTSA is the residents of Central Santa Ana. Most of the new businesses in DTSA have completely ignored these residents, perhaps to their own detriment.
Brugmann’s findings are supported by other successful downtown “wellness district” projects in the U.S., which have also focused on retail and services for the established local resident population. Continue reading→

No-Burn Alert: Mandatory Wood-Burning Ban in Effect for Residents of the South Coast Air Basin
All Indoor and Outdoor Residential Wood Burning Forbidden Due to High Air Pollution Forecast for December 8
The South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) has issued a residential no-burn alert effective Monday, December 8, 2014, for all those living in the South Coast Air Basin, which includes the greater Los Angeles area, Orange County and the Inland Empire. SCAQMD reminds residents in these areas that burning wood in their fireplaces is prohibited through midnight tonight. No-burn alerts are mandatory in order to protect public health due to a high concentration of fine particle air pollution forecast for the area. The no-burn prohibition also applies to manufactured fire logs, such as those made from wax or paper.
Fine particles in wood smoke – also known as particulate matter or PM2.5 – can get deep into the lungs and cause respiratory illnesses, increases in emergency room visits and hospitalizations. Continue reading→
