The County of Orange warns employees that the Bustamante hearings are starting

Subject: Bustamante Case

On Monday, a preliminary hearing will begin in the criminal case against former OC Public Works executive Carlos Bustamante. Mr. Bustamante is charged with 12 felony counts for alleged conduct between 2003 and 2011 when he worked for the County, including sexual assault, false imprisonment and stalking.

Preliminary hearings are held in criminal cases to determine if there is enough evidence to justify taking the defendant to trial on the charges. You will very likely be reading and hearing reports about the hearing, including comments and opinions about the County, its policies and procedures, and specific County employees, either past or current. We expect that all of the victims will be testifying. Continue reading→

High Temperatures and Wildfire Smoke Pose Potential Health Risk

(Santa Ana) – Higher than normal temperatures are expected throughout the weekend in many inland Orange County cities, increasing the risk of heat related illnesses. In addition, smoke from the San Diego County wildfires may pose a health danger to some Orange County residents, especially those in certain high-risk groups. The South Coast Air Quality Management District has issued a Smoke Advisory for Orange County.

“Everyone should take precautions to stay cool and drink plenty of water to reduce health risks related to the heat and wildfire smoke,” said Dr. Eric Handler, County Health Officer. “Additional precautions are especially needed for older adults, those with preexisting medical conditions like heart or lung disease, those with disabilities, children, and those who may be working outdoors.” Dr. Handler also reminds residents to check on their family members, friends and neighbors this weekend. Santa Ana Unified School District and Santa Ana Public Schools Foundation to host the 2nd Annual Scholarship Awards & Artspiration Auction

The Santa Ana Unified School District Board of Education together with Santa Ana Public Schools Foundation are holding a Scholarship Awards Ceremony and Artspiration Auction featuring artistic inspirations of the students of Santa Ana Unified School District. The event will take place on Wednesday, May 28 with a silent auction at 5:00 p.m. and a ceremony of scholarship award winners at 7:00 p.m. at the Bowers Museum.

Proceeds from this event are to benefit the SAPSF Scholarship fund, music and art programs, and the Educator Make a Difference Grant programs. Continue reading→

The Santa Ana Police Department will be conducting a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint on Saturday, May 17th, 2014. It will begin at 9:00PM and is scheduled to conclude at 3:00AM. It will be conducted in the area of 2000 W. First Street, in the City of Santa Ana.

The primary purpose of a DUI Checkpoint is to deter impaired driving, not to increase arrests. All too often, members of our community are senselessly injured or killed on local roadways by impaired drivers. This DUI/Drivers License checkpoint is an effort to reduce those tragedies, as well as ensuring drivers have a valid driver’s license. The DMV reports that unlicensed drivers are 4.9 times more likely to cause a fatal crash than a licensed driver. Continue reading→

SANTA ANA, Calif., May 7, 2014—The City of Santa Ana announced today the publication of its 2013 Water Quality Report, also known as the annual Consumer Confidence Report (CCR), which is now available for online viewing and download here. This annual report is designed to help consumers make health-based decisions regarding their consumption of tap water, provide other water related news and information, as well as important water conservation tips to save costs.

“We believe it’s important for Santa Ana residents to learn about the quality of their drinking water and current initiatives that are critical to preserving a reliable water supply for the community,” explains William Galvez, Interim Executive Director of Public Works. A Century and Valley high school student receives Trip Oversees from British American Business Council of Orange County

Congratulations to Century and Valley high school students for being awarded trip overseas

Sebastian Alvarado, an AVID freshman at Century High School, and Alejandro Flores, a junior at Valley High School, were recently recognized at the British American Business Council of Orange County gala dinner at the Anaheim Hilton and awarded a two week all-expense paid trip to study British history over the summer.

The British American Council OC Student Scholarship Program awards two scholarships based on an essay contest. Sebastian learned about this opportunity at his local Boys and Girls Club where he plays soccer. Sebastian is no ordinary young man. He has undergone three open heart surgeries and has successfully recovered each time putting 100% into being a successful student. Continue reading→
