SAUSD Police Chief to Provide Update on Incident involving Police Officer and 14-Year Old Male
THE EVENT: Santa Ana Unified School District Police Chief Hector Rodriguez, Ed.D. to address the media with an update involving a Santa Ana School Police Officer and the arrest of a 14-year old male that was videotaped by a citizen. The Santa Ana Unified School District Police Department has launched an investigation into video footage apparently showing a school police officer restraining a sobbing 14-year-old boy with a headlock, according to the OC Register.
We broke this story – and it has since been reported in New York, in Philadelphia, and in Riverside. But where has it not been reported? That’s right – there is NO MENTION of this on the SAUSD’s website nor on their Facebook page.
SAUSD School Board Member Rob Richardson has not mentioned any of this on his Facebook Page. SAUSD School Board Member Cecilia Iglesias has not mentioned it on her Facebook Page either. What about the other SAUSD School Board Members? I don’t think John Palacio and Audrey Noji have Facebook Pages. Jose Alfredo Hernandez does but it is just used to hype his law firm. Continue reading
Here we go again. The City of Santa Ana has announced, as usual, a crackdown on Easter Crusing:
Each Easter holiday, the City of Santa Ana experiences a high volume of unsanctioned cruising activity on Bristol St. This unsanctioned activity produces public safety concerns, numerous calls for service and grid-lock.
As with past years, the Santa Ana Police Department is taking pro-active measures to deter cruising activity throughout the city on Easter evening. Unfortunately, several city neighborhoods will be affected by the various street closures that will be established as a part of the anti-cruising effort. Continue reading

SANTA ANA, CA (April 8, 2014) – The City & OCTA invite everyone to participate in Bike to Work Day on May 7th. The event begins at 7am at the Santa Ana Regional Transportation Center and will include a blessing of the bikes ceremony before biking to City Hall at 8am.
This event is being held to encourage residents to be active, bike to work, and promote healthy living. We are very excited to have Jax Bicycle Center participate and partner with the City to give participants an opportunity to win prizes including two bicycles. Continue reading

SANTA ANA, CA (April 10, 2014) – Relay for Life officials gave Councilman Vincent Sarmiento the privilege of naming him honorary chair for this year’s relay. Councilman Sarmiento will join City Elected Officials and the American Cancer Society in honoring cancer survivors at the Opening Ceremony which will be held at the Santa Ana College Track on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 12 pm.
“It’s an honor to participate in the Relay once again. It’s important to come together as a community to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, to inspire others to continue the fight and to remind everyone that fighting cancer is a year round priority,” said Councilman Sarmiento. Funeral Service for former Spurgeon Teacher Rick Doty
Rick Doty was a math department chair for many years at Spurgeon and a front-runner for what we now call common core. His passion was teaching and he impacted the lives of many students.

STRAUSS FOUNDATION AWARDS CHRISTINE PHAM $10,000 PUBLIC SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP TO CARRY OUT PROJECT IN HER SENIOR YEAR
The Donald A. Strauss Public Service Scholarship Foundation, established as a memorial to the late Don Strauss of Newport Beach and now designed to award $10,000 scholarships to as many as 15 California college juniors annually, has announced that among the foundation’s new group of recipients is University of California, Irvine student Christine Pham.
The Strauss scholarships fund public-service projects that the students have proposed and will carry out during their senior year. Pham, who hails from Fountain Valley, will create My Healthy Start: an after school program that will educate students from the thirty-six elementary schools of the Santa Ana Unified School District and their parents on proper nutrition and physical activity on a monthly basis. Approximately 34.8% of children living in Santa Ana are obese, one of the highest rates of a city in California and double the national average. By focusing on simple habit changes for proper nutrition and physical activity, this program works to empower families to take care of their health in order to curb the obesity rates. ESSILOR VISION FOUNDATION AND KIDS VISION FOR LIFE PRESENT KIDS VISION FEST ON APRIL 17 & 18
Approximately 400 pairs of glasses to be provided for children in need at no cost, plus vision screenings for more than 2,200 children
SANTA ANA, California (April 9, 2014) – Did you know that 80 percent of what a child learns is through his eyes (Vision Impact Institute, 2011)? And that up to 25 percent of school children may have vision issues that affect their ability to learn (Vision Impact Institute, 2011)?
In an effort to eliminate poor vision and its lifelong consequences, Kids Vision for Life, a program in partnership with Essilor Vision Foundation, the Alcon Foundation and Marshal B. Ketchum University’s Southern California College of Optometry, will host Kids Vision Fest on Thursday and Friday, April 17th & 18th, 2014, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will be held at Esqueda Elementary School, located at 2240 Main Street; Santa Ana, CA; 92707. On [Santa Ana] Art walk nights, Jack “JackOffCity” Jakosky sits in the Santora Basement scouring at all of the people who come downstairs with his Nazi/German [looking] girlfriend, like some paranoid wannabe-Hitler figure who can’t really communicate to anyone (a guy like this would probably imprison the planet if he had the charisma to actually communicate with people). He sits there in wait to make sure that no one has any fun, and to make sure they close down the basement by 10 pm on a Saturday night art walk night.
Where does this “Jackoff” get time to suppress people’s fun like that? The old owner never even came by the place, ever. I can’t believe this “JackOff” doesn’t have anything better to do. Or, I can’t believe someone would buy a building like that, and then not want to add to what was already there instead of take it away and ruin the art scene. Or, why he would not want to get to know the community that was already going on, is beyond me. Continue reading
Elvia Fernandez, a Santa Ana mom, is having trouble processing what she saw happen today at John Adams Park, in Santa Ana. She videotaped a burly Santa Ana Unified School District Police Officer who jumped on top of a kid he caught tagging at the park. Allegedly the cop threatened to pepper spray the kid.
According to eyewitnesses the child was perhaps fourteen years old. You can hear him crying in the video that Elvia shot. And the cop clearly shouts at Elvia and another bystander – demanding that they stop speaking in Spanish. They were telling the child to stop struggling and were trying to calm him down. A shooting that occurred in the 1100 block of West Hemlock Way in Santa Ana left a victim wounded in the street and nearly hit a sleeping elderly woman in a nearby apartment early Monday morning at around 1:15 a.m according to ABC News.
Santa Ana police Commander Enrique Esparza says the 18-year-old victim was walking on the street early Monday when a suspect drove up, got out of his car and opened fire according to the AP. Continue reading
