Should our broke city be paying artists to decorate utility boxes?
The Santa Ana City Council is offering artists the opportunity to beautify SanTana’s plain ol’ dumpy utility boxes with their own original artwork with the Utility Box Art Project. UBAP is just one of the ways the council is planning to bring in more public art to town, while at the same time engaging members of the community to participate. Artists and art groups must apply by November 6 to be considered for the opportunity, as they will be able to enjoy the neat perk of exposure, a stipend of $700 and a reimbursement of $200 for supplies, according to the OC Weekly.
Artists said that the $900 pay being offered to paint local power boxes was simply too low, according to the Voice of OC. Continue reading

By: Jon Coupal, Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association
Sacramento, CA – HJTA has released its 2013 Legislative Report Card. HJTA’s scorecard is intended as a tool to help struggling California taxpayers hold legislators of both parties accountable. Of the 120 members of the Legislature, 79 received a grade of “F” while only 25 earned an “A” grade. Twenty bills were used and represent the priorities of HJTA’s 200,000 members.
“Our report card is designed to help Californians gauge how their state representatives are actually performing on taxpayer-related issues including tax increases and direct attacks on Proposition 13,” said HJTA President Jon Coupal. “Regrettably, the grades show that Sacramento continues to be very hostile to taxpayers.” Continue reading
SAPD officer cleared for shooting an alleged gang member on Dec. 10, 2010
Orange County District Attorney (OCDA) Tony Rackauckas has published a letter justifying the fatal shooting of Santa Ana resident Andres Ramirez, on Dec. 10, 2010, by Santa Ana Police officer Frank Gutierrez. Click here to read the OCDA’s letter.
Unfortunately the OCDA posts these letters in graphic format so that we can’t copy and paste the information. What the OCDA determined was that Ramirez, who moved here from North Carolina, was one of several young men who ran when SAPD officers drove by the alley that they were apparently drinking beer in. The only one that got caught that night was Ramirez. Continue reading
