Community Alert: Additional Garage Sale Weekend – December 8 & 9
SANTA ANA, CA (December 4, 2012) – Though the rain last weekend was mostly welcome it may have put a damper on those residents who had planned to have a garage sale. Because of the rain the City has designated this coming weekend, December 8 & 9, as an additional garage sale weekend.
All the other standard rules will apply. Hours for garage sales may be from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Garage sale activity may not be conducted on public sidewalks, parkways, streets or alleys. Items sold at garage sales must be goods, wares or merchandize of a household nature, from that household, and not acquired elsewhere for resale. Signs advertising garage sales must be removed within 1 day after the end of the sale.

The Rancho Santiago Community College District’s Board of Education will be quite different once their new Trustees are sworn in. For the first time that I can remember the Board will be majority Latino with only two holdovers in Phil Yarbrough and John Hanna.
The rest of the Trustees are Latinos – Arianna Barrios; Nelida Yanez; Jose Solorio and Claudia Alvarez. Three of them are Democrats. Barrios however is an independent who is very tight with the Orange County Republicans – and she does public relations work for Anaheim Council Member Kris Murray, another Republican. Community: City of Santa Ana’s Facilities-Fleet Maintenance-Central Stores is Honored with ASE’s Blue Seal Award
SANTA ANA, CA (November 30, 2012) – The Finance Department’s Facilities-Fleet Maintenance-Central Stores (FMCS) staff recently received word of its latest professional honors: the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Blue Seal. This award recognizes a select group of public and private fleet organizations whose staff and facilities meet ASE professional standards. To receive the award, 75% of the technicians performing diagnosis and repair must be ASE-certified. Additionally, each service area offered in the shop must be covered by at least one ASE-Certified Technician. Moreover, at least one of those ASE-Certified Technicians must be certified in Alternative Energy Technology. Continue reading
By now you have read about the ruckus in Santa Ana yesterday when there was a “after a confrontation between a large crowd and police officers Wednesday evening, in the area of West Camille Street,” according to the O.C. Register.
Shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday, an Orange County Fire Authority crew responding to a medical call in the 3300 block of West Camille Street requested police assistance, telling dispatchers that two men were harassing them while they were trying to attend to a patient, Cmdr. Steve Colon said. As a result, three men and a juvenile were arrested, said Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.
But hold the presses. The community is fighting back. Apparently the 17 year old who was arrested, Sergio Galan, is a 4.0 student who speaks English quite well. But the cops who beat him up and arrested him did not know that as they allegedly made anti-Mexican statements. Continue reading

Santa Ana Public Library Welcomes Author: Gustavo Arellano
SANTA ANA, CA (November 29, 2012) – The Santa Ana Public Library is pleased to present award winning columnist and author, Gustavo Arellano who will discuss his new book, Taco USA: How Mexican Food Conquered America.
Arellano is the editor of the OC Weekly and writes the nationally syndicated column ¡Ask a Mexican!, which has a circulation of more than two million in thirty-eight markets (and counting). He has received the President’s Award from the Los Angeles Press Club, an Impact Award from the National Hispanic Media Coalition, and a 2008 Latino Spirit Award from the California State legislature. Arellano has appeared on the Today show, Nightline, NPR’s Talk of the Nation and The Colbert Report.
