Santa Ana is the place to be once again this Memorial Day weekend as Santa Ana Cemetery and Fairhaven Memorial Park host special events that are free and open to the public.

The dark side of Tom Fuentes, the deceased former OC GOP Chairman

Deceased former Republican Party of Orange County Chairman Tom Fuentes “scripted his funeral ritual last August with one of his former seminary classmates and refined it in the intervening months,” according to his longtime friend, O.C. Register columnist Frank Mickadeit.

As usual, when it came to Fuentes, there is more to the story.  The OC Weekly’s Gustavo Arellano scrutinized the list of guest speakers and attendees at Fuentes’ funeral and he found a gaggle of pedophile apologists:

*Giving the homily was the man who replaced Fuentes as communications director, Lawrence Baird. Baird was a notorious asshole to many sex-abuse victims, defended vile pedophile Michael Harris as “an icon to the priesthood” to the media even as the Orange diocese knew he was a pedophile rapist, and even once sued a sex-abuse victim for defamation (he lost). Flower Street closure set for Memorial Day Weekend

City of Santa Ana Advisory: FLOWER STREET CLOSURE OVER MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND

SANTA ANA, CA (May 25, 2012) – Beginning Saturday, May 26 at 4:00 am, the County of Orange will be performing work that requires the closure of portions of Flower and Sixth Streets near the Santa Ana Stadium. The work includes installation of a new electrical feeder cable between the County’s Central Utility facility and its Jail complex. The closures include Flower Street from north of Sixth Street to Santa Ana Boulevard, and about 300 feet of Sixth Street just west of Flower Street. This work is scheduled to begin Saturday, May 26 at 4:00 am, and will conclude on Sunday, May 27 at 6:00 pm. Continue reading→

FLEA-BORNE TYPHUS ALERT FOR LOCAL SANTA ANA COMMUNITY

SANTA ANA, CA (May 25, 2012) – Earlier this week Santa Ana officials were notified by O.C. Vector Control that, as of last Friday, there is a Santa Ana resident with a confirmed case of Typhus. The resident lives in the area of Broadway/Washington; due to HIPAA regulations the actual address cannot be revealed. Since being notified, the O.C. Vector Control has gone out to the community in the immediate area, to the closest surrounding schools, and disseminated literature advising how they can protect themselves. Continue reading→

Advisory: SCE ANNOUNCES PLANNED POWER OUTAGES IN SANTA ANA

SANTA ANA, CA (May 25, 2012) – SCE notified the City of Santa Ana that it will be performing maintenance on the electrical system in the area. In order to perform this work safely, SCE must temporarily interrupt electric service and turn off power. This outage will allow them to upgrade aging infrastructure, make needed improvements, and complete other repairs. O.C. liberals set themselves up for failure when they got behind Julio Perez

It is simply amazing how much mail the Julio Perez campaign and his friends in labor are sending out – daily.  I am receiving at least two pieces per day.  It reminds me of the recall of former SAUSD Trustee Nativo Lopez.  My mail box drowned in pro Lopez mail, because at the time my wife was working at Disney, at a union job.

Now I am the one in a union – a teacher’s union.  So this time I am being targeted by the unions.  And they are destined to fail again, as they did in the Lopez recall. Continue reading→

Three High School Inc. Students Win at National Culinary Competition
High School Inc., workforce development students put skills to the test

SANTA ANA – Ashley Blanco, Alejandro Hernandez and Ivan Lopez, senior Culinary Arts and Hospitality students in the High School Inc. Academies at Valley High School, were first-place winners in a recent competition in Washington, D.C. The team cooked a healthy meal that teens across American have indicated they would like to eat at their school cafeteria.

This was part of a national organization that promotes healthy eating in schools to lower childhood obesity that is prevalent in the poor neighborhoods of Santa Ana and others across the nation. The Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce began its High School Inc. program five years ago in an effort to build a stronger economic base by empowering youth to train for careers before they graduate from high school. Santa Ana’s Jonathan Espinoza profiled in Hispanic Business Magazine

Just when you thought that Santa Ana’s Jonathan Espinoza could not possibly get more press…he has been profiled in Hispanic Business Magazine.  Kudos to Jonathan – his story is just incredible and it definitely is worth repeating.  Here are a few excerpts from the article:

Jonathan Espinoza, a senior at Segerstrom High School student in Santa Ana, Calif., thanks to Simon Scholars, has received a full scholarship to attend Georgetown University beginning in the fall of 2012.

Espinoza joined the New Port, Calif., based Simon Scholars program during his junior year. Founded by Ron Simon in 2003, the program emphasizes both strong academic performance and personal interaction with students to help them develop the self-confidence, self-esteem and academic advancement to succeed as the next generation of leaders. Wicked ‘Wiches gourmet sandwiches opening up in Santa Ana this Friday, 5/25

Wicked ‘Wiches was formed with one goal – feeding the masses the best gourmet sandwich they ever, ever had.  And now they are opening up a restaurant in Santa Ana, after catering from a location in Fountain Valley since 2009.  They are in fact opening up this Friday, May 25, at 10:30 am, according to their Facebook page.  (A word of warning – their menu will be limited as their oven won’t be installed yet).  I believe they close at 5:30 pm, so get their early enough to pick up dinner, or stop by for lunch!

Their food looks amazing.  The sandwich pictured atop this post is their “Bada Bing,” for $8.95.  It looks pretty filling!  Other offerings include a Soyrizo Eggwhite Quiche (pictured below) and a spaghetti dish in a lemon cream sauce.  Boy does that sound good. Continue reading→

Back to Natives RECEIVES $1,000 GRANT FROM DISNEY FOR VOLUNTEER HABITAT RESTORATION PROGRAM

IRVINE, Calif., May 23, 2012 – Back to Natives Restoration, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit public charity has received a $1,000 grant from Disney to support its Volunteer Habitat Restoration Program.

Back to Natives is collaborating with the City of Santa Ana at the Santiago Park Nature Reserve, where student volunteers remove invasive plants and plant native plants. Volunteers learn about the importance of biodiversity and habitat restoration as they perform meaningful community service to improve the Reserve for both wildlife and humans.
