Orange County Board of Supervisors Appoints Interim Public Defender

(Santa Ana, CA) — The Orange County Board of Supervisors has appointed a veteran employee of the Offices of the Public Defender to serve as Interim Public Defender.

Frank Ospino was selected for the interim appointment to succeed Deborah Kwast, who is retiring on August 2nd after serving more than 30 years with the Public Defender’s Office, including the last eight years as Public Defender. Continue reading→

  • Wednesday, July 27, 6-8:30pm, Fountain Valley: Democratic Club of West Orange County Outdoor Dinner and Green Fair starting at 6 PM with dinner at 6:30 PM. at 17250 Los Jardines West, Fountain Valley. Visit dcwoc.org for maps and contact westocdems@yahoo.com for more information.  We are working to make sure this event supports local businesses and farmers, having organic (or homemade) foods and drinks, that are in regular cookware or at least, in sustainable containers. No paper plates or plastic forks here, we’ll have real plates and flatware! Thanks to the food vendors we’ll be using, such as Whole Foods with their sustainably farmed salmon, Z-Pizza Vegetarian Pizza, fresh tomatoes from local farmers, and luscious apple tarts from Laetitia’s Bakery. The Santa Ana City Council’s Public Safety Committee is meeting on Tuesday, July 26, and the meeting promises to be an interesting one.  The topics on the agenda, which is below, include discussion about a proposed C.U.P. (Conditional Use Permit) for the gay bar called the “Velvet Lounge,” which is supposed to open soon, and a Bail Bond Solicitation update (we wrote about that awhile ago – bail bondsmen are illegally soliciting for bails outside our jail, and most of these guys don’t even have businesses in town). ESPN says that Mexican soccer fans are the best sports fans in the U.S.A.

Fans of the Mexican National Soccer Team, known as “El Tri,” are the best sports fans in the U.S.A., according to a new column in ESPN Magazine.  These fans travel – anywhere in the U.S.A. where they can watch their beloved “El Tri.”  You can see their effect on Facebook, where El Tri has almost 4,000 fans.

And big business has taken note.

Whom did Jerry Jones book to headline the inaugural sporting event at Cowboys Stadium? Mexico, which set a soccer attendance record in Texas in its 2009 Gold Cup quarterfinal against Haiti. And guess who kicked off the first full event at New Meadowlands Stadium the following year? Mexico again, in a friendly against Ecuador that was attended by 77,705 fans, according to ESPN. Why didn’t Supervisor Nguyen submit a redistricting plan proposal?

The Voice of OC blog reported this week that “Supervisor Janet Nguyen’s hopes of changing draft maps of proposed new supervisorial districts were blocked Friday by aides of her colleagues, who voted to stick with existing proposals.”

But then the Voice of OC also stated that “So far, all supervisors except Nguyen have submitted proposals for their aides to discuss, as did members of the Latino and Vietnamese communities.”

What gives?  Why did Supervisor Nguyen shirk her duty by avoiding the redistricting issue? In doing so she let both her Vietnamese and Latino communities down! Continue reading→

The anti-soccer haters here in Santa Ana are actually very few in number – but like noisy chihuahuas they are a pain in the rear – and the media has been paying attention to them, even though they hardly represent the overall population of Santa Ana.

Now they have even started a very lame little blog, using antiquated Blogspot software – and they have even infected the Washington Square Neighborhood. The good news is that now we can go about debunking their silly arguments.

Closely related to the golden lion tamarin, golden-headed lion tamarins have a black body with a golden-orange face and hands. These rare monkeys are only found on the Atlantic coast of Brazil. Downtown Inc.’s first Summer Concert brought a crowd to Santa Ana’s East End

Downtown Inc’s Summer Concert Series launched on Friday, July 22, from 5 pm to 9 pm, at the plaza located at French and Fourth Streets, in Downtown Santa Ana’s East End.  The event drew a diverse crowd and featured beer and wine sales as well as snacks and offerings from local vendors.

Admission was free and all ages were welcome.

This series features 10 weeks of Friday night concerts with over 48 different music and entertainment groups.

SAUSD teacher starts a new blog

A friend of mine who teaches at the Santa Ana Unified School District has started a new blog for local teachers.  The focus is on GATE training (gifted and talented education) but the scope is teaching in general.  Here are a few excerpts from her opening post:

The idea for this blog came about at a recent GATE training provided by the Santa Ana Unified School District.  At the training, teachers said they wished they had more opportunities to share, plan together, and process what they were learning.  Well, now we do – right here.  This blog was created by teachers for teachers – a place to discuss, reflect, get or give ideas, ask questions, encourage each other – you name it – this is the place.  And, it’s certainly not just for teachers of identified GATE students.  Many of the GATE strategies are good teaching for all our students.
