Press Release: SAUSD SEEKS COMMUNITY ENRICHMENT PROVIDERS FOR AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS

Founded in 1888, The Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) is the 6th largest school district in California, and the largest in Orange County, California. Santa Ana Unified educates approximately 54,000 students and is composed of sixty-one (61) schools: thirty-six (36) elementary schools, nine (9) intermediate schools, six (6) high schools, three (3) alternative high schools, five (5) charter schools, and one (1) special school. Approximately 60% of SAUSD students are English learners. Spanish, Vietnamese, and Khmer are the most common languages spoken at home. Continue reading→

Sharon Romeo Named Orange County Teacher of the Year for 2016

The “prize patrol” bus loaded with OCDE administrators, media and sponsors continued the journey announcing the five 2016 Orange County Teachers of the Year this morning. Sponsors are on hand with prizes including Disney park passes and a $500 check from SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union. Each winner will also receive a $15,000 prize from the the Dr. James Hines Foundation, established by OC residents Bill and Sue Gross, at a dinner in the teachers’ honor in November at the Disneyland Hotel.

Santa Ana Kiwanis to host their first George Upton Annual Barrier Free Picnic today

The Santa Ana Kiwanis are hosting their First “George Upton Annual Barrier Free Picnic” today, May 22, 2015, from 9:30 am to 12 noon, at the Kiwanis Barrier-Free Park in Santa Ana. The Santa Ana Barrier Free park is a place where children with special needs can play alongside their typical peers, while not being help back by the normal “barriers” that exist in most play grounds.

They are hosting 150 Special Needs students from the SAUSD.

The Santa Ana Police Department and the Orange County Fire Authority will be at this event which will be catered by the Orange County Employees Association (OCEA). Circle K is also participating. Continue reading→

(May 14, 2015) – The Santa Ana Unified School District Board of Education adopted a resolution at its May 12, 2015, Board meeting opposing Assembly Bill 715, a bill authored by Assemblymember Tom Daly, which proposes to revise the definition of assessable space for which school districts can collect developer fees. Developer fees were established to offset impacts to school facilities from new students generated from residential and commercial development. According to the resolution adopted by the Board, altering the definition of assessable space may limit the developer fees districts can receive from new development and may negatively impact school facilities. (May 13, 2015) – Santa Ana Unified School District’s Segerstrom High School will be the host location of the USA Volleyball doubleheader featuring both the U.S. Women’s and Men’s National Teams this Friday, May 15, 2015. Students and their families are invited to attend back-to-back matches beginning with the U.S. Women at 5:30 p.m., followed by the U.S. Men at 7:30 p.m. An autograph session will follow at the conclusion of the men’s match.

“This is a great opportunity for our students to have access to such talented athletes. Celebrating the Art of Students in Santa Ana

April 27, 2015 – The Santa Ana Public Schools Foundation (SAPSF) in partnership with the Santa Ana Unified School District is celebrating the success and creativity of the arts during the 3rd Annual Artspiration, an event benefiting the Santa Ana Unified School District Arts and Music Programs, to be held Thursday, April 30, 2015, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the beautiful Bowers Museum, located at 2002 N. Main Street, in Santa Ana.

“Artspiration offers an opportunity to showcase our great student artists and their art. Student art on display at the Bowers Museum allows our students, parents and teachers to celebrate the arts,” said Rob Richardson, President of SAPSF. Guests will have an opportunity to purchase exceptional prints of the award winning artwork by Santa Ana Unified School District’s budding, talented student artists. Guests will be entertained with musical selections by student groups and have an opportunity to meet some of the artists. Two stabbed as fight involving 25 people breaks out by Community Day School

A fight broke out this afternoon involving up to 25 people, near the Community Day Intermediate and High School on Civic Center Drive and Fairview Street just after 3 p.m., according to the O.C. Register.

Two male students, ages 14 and 17, were stabbed during the fracas and were taken to local hospitals in Garden Grove and in Orange. The older boy is said to be in stable condition while the younger boy is in serious condition.

According to witnesses, the fight began on on Civic Center Drive and Fairview Street and ended up at a nearby an apartment complex on Fifth Street. Continue reading→

Assemblymember Tom Daly recognizes Pearl Raya of Santa Ana as the 2015 Woman of the Year for the 69th Assembly District

A lifelong resident of Santa Ana, Pearl Raya has dedicated her to life to improving opportunities for youth in her community

Pearl Raya is a lifelong resident of Santa Ana. She and her husband Leon are the proud parents of four children.

Pearl has spent her life supporting and mentoring families and children. She worked for the City of Santa Ana Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department for over 30 years, retiring in 2012. Pearl developed and managed programs for at-risk youth, families and senior, and she served as director of the Southwest Senior Center and Santa Ana Senior Center. Continue reading→

Saddleback High School student injured in a gang-related drive by shooting

The latest gang-related drive-by shooting in Santa Ana targeted two Saddleback High School students who are known to be gang members. One boy was walking while another student was on a bicyle, as they traveled south on Baker Street, near West Alton Avenue on Wednesday afternoon. A vehicle pulled up at around 2:55 pm and several shots were fired, according to the O.C. Register.

The boy who was on foot was shot in the neck and shoulder. He was lucky – he escaped with non-life threatening injuries. No one else was injured. Continue reading→

McFadden Intermediate School Celebrates 50 Years on April 16, 2015

Celebration of Serving 6 -8 grade students of Santa Ana with a high-quality education

(April 1, 2015) – The McFadden Intermediate School community invites all former and current students, staff, and parents to join in the celebration of 50 years of providing a high-quality education to the Santa Ana community on Thursday, April 16, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. during the school’s annual Open House. “We are extremely excited to celebrate 50 years of excellence at McFadden Intermediate School. Our community has benefited from excellent instruction, top tier staff and a supportive parental involvement. We are looking forward to the next 50 years as we embark in “Designing 21st Century Learning” and educate the future leaders and outstanding citizens of this community,” said Ignacio Muniz, Principal of McFadden.

What makes this celebration extra special is the participation of its first principal Pat Hoffman. At 90 plus years old, Mr. Hoffman will celebrate this historical moment with many of his colleagues who worked at the school during the early years. Last year, Mr. Hoffman returned to McFadden for Principal for a Day. Although a lot has changed since his time in the sixties and seventies, the rich tradition of the Scots remains the same.
