Santa Ana Unified School District Provides Free LUNCHES THROUGH Summer FEEDING Program
SANTA ANA, CA — June 18, 2014 – The Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) will be participating in a free summer lunch program at 42 schools and 8 park sites within the district boundary between June 23rd to August 22nd.
The federally-funded program operates Monday through Thursday at most schools, with a select number of locations operating Monday through Friday. The program is open to all children ages 1 to 18, no income requirements or registration is necessary, and all participants must eat their lunch at the site. Continue reading

Santa Ana High School 12th Grade Student Nicandra Lopez won a new 2014 Chevy Sonic, courtesy of Guaranty Chevrolet, this past Saturday at the SAUSD’s Perfect Attendance Car Giveaway event.

The Valley High School Culinary Arts team of High School Inc. Academy continue to reign as the nation’s culinary arts champions after clinching first-place for the third time in a row at the National Cooking up Change® competition that was held Monday, June 9, 2014, in Washington, D.C. Their journey began this spring when they competed against other high school students enrolled in culinary arts programs in Orange County and won first place. This fall’s Santa Ana School Board race is shaping up to be perhaps the most interesting local election in awhile.
Candidates for the SAUSD School Board who already announced that they are running in November include Shuntele Andrews, a retired Valley High School teacher; Cecilia Aguinaga, a community activist who serves on the OC Vector Control Board; Eric Alderete, an attorney and Planning Commissioner; and Valerie Amezcua, a Supervising Probation Officer at the Central Youth and Family Resource Center in the City of Santa Ana.
Two SAUSD School Board Trustees are up for reelection – John Palacio and Audrey Yamagata-Noji. Both have been in office far too long. I hear Yamagata-Noji may be retiring from the School Board. I have not heard that about Palacio. I suspect he will run again. He almost has to. He says he is a political consultant but who would hire him? He needs the pay and benefits he gets from the SAUSD. Shuntele Andrews, a retired Santa Ana teacher, is running for the SAUSD School Board in November. She taught Social Studies and History at Valley High School in Santa Ana for 35 years. She was raised in Santa Ana since the age of 11, attending Santa Ana public schools, going on to UCI to earn her Bachelor’s and then the University of Southern California to get her Masters of Education and teaching credentials. She has received the Teacher of the Year award three times and served as the Social Science/History department chair for five years. She has also served on the Blue Ribbon commission and several hiring committees for the principals of Valley High School. Upon retirement she has continued to work for SAUSD as a substitute and CELDT tester.

Foundation presents college scholarships to high school seniors
May 29, 2014 – When Santa Ana High School student Antonio Calderon learned that his drawing had received top honors – Best in Show – among all of the submitted art pieces by students throughout the Santa Ana Unified School District, his reaction was summed up in one word, “Incredible!” Antonio was among dozens of artists in grades K-12 who participated in the 2nd Annual Artspiration and Scholarship Awards Ceremony sponsored by the Santa Ana Public Schools Foundation (SAPSF) in partnership with the Santa Ana Unified School District. The event, held Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at 5:00 p.m. at the beautiful Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, provided students with an opportunity to showcase their talents to their family, friends, teachers, and the broader community. “It says a lot about the talents of our young people to have their artwork on display at the Bowers Museum,” said Rob Richardson, President of SAPSF and member of the Santa Ana Unified School District Board of Education.
