Santa Ana Unified Speech and Debate National Qualifying Championship Tournament

Producing Our Leaders of Tomorrow through the Art of Speech and Debate

SANTA ANA, CA (May 1, 2017) – More than 300 intermediate students in the Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) will compete and demonstrate their oratorical skills during the District’s Speech and Debate National Qualifying Championship tournament to be held this Saturday, May 6, 2017, from 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. at Santa Ana High School, located at 520 West Walnut Street in Santa Ana.

“This is another example of the unique opportunities exclusive to Santa Ana Unified students. Our intermediate students are getting a jumpstart to speech and debate which is normally offered only at the high school level. Saddleback High School joins elite ranks of International Baccalaureate (IB) World Class schools

Rigorous program to help SAUSD close achievement gap with Latino and low-income students

(April 21, 2017) – Saddleback High School has been named an International Baccalaureate (IB) World Class school, a prestigious honor awarded to only select schools across the globe.

Beginning in the 2017-18 school year, Saddleback students will begin taking coursework that will result in the awarding of an IB Diploma upon graduation. With this diploma, students will be immediately recognized as having received a rigorous world-class education that has prepared them for the most competitive higher education institutions in the world. The Godinez H.S. Boy’s Soccer team will be honored on the MaxPreps Tour of Champions

The Godinez High School boys’ varsity soccer team will be presented with the Army National Guard National Ranking Trophy as part of the 12th annual MaxPreps Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard. Godinez finished No. 3 in the final rankings and is one of 10 boys’ varsity soccer teams that are being honored on this season’s tour. The presentation will be made during a lunch assembly.

This event is set for Friday, April 21, 2017, at 12:15 p.m. at the Cafeteria at Godinez High School, located at 3002 Centennial Rd., in Santa Ana. Participating in the event will be Godinez H.S. Athletic Director- Greg Coombs, Varsity Soccer Head Coach- Ruben Fernandez, MaxPreps Regional Representative- Josh Canales, and California Army National Guard Representative- SGT Marisa Danya. The SAUSD’s School Police Chief is retiring on March 31

Retiring SAUSD Police Chief Hector Rodriguez

On the morning of March 29, 2017, the men and women of the Santa Ana School Police Department formally recognized the retirement of Chief of Police, Hector Rodriguez.

Chief Rodriguez will retire effective, March 31, 2017 after having had served in a variety of law enforcement roles for the past 29 years; includes the Los Angeles Police Department from 1988 to 2002, the Los Angeles School Police Department from 1991 to 2013, and retiring from the Santa Ana School Police Department as Chief of Police where he served from 2013-2017. KPMG’s Nationwide “Read to Succeed” Initiative comes to Taft Elementary School in Santa Ana on March 29, 2017

KPMG volunteers will read to students; 1,000 new books to be distributed to children

As part of KPMG’s nationwide “Read to Succeed” initiative, its 100+ offices throughout the United States are conducting events in the coming weeks at schools and organizations in low-income communities at which KPMG people, spouses, family members, and alumni, will volunteer their time to get more than 150,000 new books into the hands of children who need them most.

In Santa Ana, KPMG volunteers will be reading to Taft’s K-6 general education, special education, deaf, and hard of hearing students and providing each of them with books. Continue reading→

Former SAUSD teacher sentenced to 190 years in prison after sexually assaulting two Filipino girls

Robert Ruben Ornelas, a former SAUSD school teacher was sentenced Monday to 190 years in federal prison for sexually assaulting two girls during trips to the Philippines, according to the O.C. Register.

Fortunately U.S. District Judge Cormac J. Carney dropped the hammer on Ornelas, giving him the maximum punishment available. Continue reading→

Should the Santa Ana City Council issue a formal apology to Nativo Lopez?

Do you remember Nativo Lopez? He was a Santa Ana School Board member who was recalled in 2003 due in part to allegations that he was impeding the implementation of Proposition 227 in the 62,000-student school system. Prop. 227 was the measure backed by wealthy Republican Ron Unz that put a stop to bilingual education in California. Unz also spent $100,00 to gather the signatures that put the Lopez recall on the ballot.

But in the November General Election this year California’ voters reversed Prop. 227 – by passing Prop. 58 they restored bilingual education in the Golden State. And this week the Santa Ana City Council passed a Sanctuary City resolution. Continue reading→

Advisory: Thorpe Fundamental School on Lockdown due to Police Activity in the area. Police Officers on scene. Students Safe.

Update: The lockdown has been lifted as of 10:33 a.m. The suspect has been arrested by the SAPD.

Police are searching for a suspect in the area of Thorpe Fundamental School. As a precaution only, Thorpe has been placed in a lockdown. Police Officers are on site at the school Students are safe. Continue reading→

Pio Pico elementary closed for the day after a car crashed into a power pole

We don’t get snow days here in Santa Ana but the students at Pio Pico Elementary got to skip school today after a car crashed into a power pole early this morning, forcing the school to close for the day, according to the O.C. Register.

The single-vehicle crash happened at about 6:30 a.m. at the 6700 block of South Flower Street, according to the SAPD. Continue reading→
