WyzAnt helps tutors and students connect for private lessons. Santa Ana High School’s Robotics Engineering Club takes on Cerritos H.S.
Santa Ana High School’s robotics engineering club took on the Cerritos High School robotics team on June 4, at Cerritos High School.
All of the robotic vehicles are original designs by students. They are fully autonomous robots using Parallax microcontrollers programmed in P-Basic.
Students had 30 minutes to develope a strategy and program their vehicles to achieve the highest score possible in a given time period.

Assemblyman Solorio Announces Santa Ana Discovery Science Center is Awarded $7 million from Prop. 84 Park Bond
Early support of application and outreach to key leaders may have influenced decision
Sacramento – State Assemblyman Jose Solorio (D-Anaheim) offers congratulations to Santa Ana-based Discovery Science Center for their success in receiving a significant Proposition 84 Nature Education Facilities Program award. The center requested and will receive $7 million to expand its existing facility and build a California Natural Resources Pavilion.
The Discovery Science Center is a nonprofit organization currently serving 420,000 students, teachers and general visitors each year, plus an additional 200,000 chidren in their classrooms.
“I strongly supported their application, and contacted key state leaders to garner their support,” says Solorio. “I told anyone who would listen that there could not be a more worthy candidate for Prop 84 funds. The Discovery Science Center already has an excellent track record of increasing public understanding and appreciation for science, math and technology through interactive exhibits and programs. This new pavilion will only enhance what they do so well right now for Orange County youth.”
The Discovery Science Center’s new California Natural Resources Pavilion will add 21,000 square feet to their existing center and educate visitors about our air, water, and land resources. The expansion will feature the latest sustainable features incorporated into the construction and design of the new building, and will highlight the importance of these resources to Southern California. The exhibits will feature goal-oriented approaches in which visitors learn scientific concepts through engaging in a series of tasks to achieve a mission. Targeted groups will include students, the economically disadvantaged, racial/ethnic minorities, teachers, and visitors of all ages.
“I especially want to thank President Joe Adams of the Discover Science Center for preparing a great proposal with a strong vision,” Solorio added. “The kids from Santa Ana and throughout Southern California will reap the educational benefits of this innovative project for decades to come.”

Discovery Science Center offers free admission to S.A. residents on Tuesday
Santa Ana residents can get in free to the Discovery Science Center on the firsty Tuesday of every month, which falls on April 5, this week. Admission is usually $12.95 for adults and $9.95 for children 3 to 17. Parking is $3.
Orange County’s first and only Smithsonian Affiliate, Taco Bell Discovery Science Center offers more than 100 hands-on exhibits to spark children’s natural curiosity. A Delta III Rocket towers 85 feet over Interstate 5, representing the contribution made by Southern California companies and individuals toward the conquest of space. Opening in 2009: The Science of Hockey. Visitors will experience the colder side of science as they explore physics, physiology and flying pucks! Exhibition highlights include a Zamboni, Penalty Box and Broadcast Booth, among many others.
Annual events include BubbleFest during Spring Break, special summer exhibitions, Spooky Science in October, and the Science of Gingerbread during the holiday season. These events often include a separate fee.

Orange County’s Most Astounding Spring Break Event
Leading the excitement is sixteen-time Guinness Book World Record Holder and Bubble Scientist, Fan Yang and his son, Deni Yang. Fan has been performing his amazing “Mega Bubble Show” in New York City and has been featured on TV networks around the globe.
Fan Yang will be performing shows April 2 – 4 and Deni Yang will take the stage April 5 – 24.
World-renowned for unique and stunning artistry, the Mega Bubble Show features a bubble carousel, bubbles within bubbles, smoking bubbles, spinning bubbles, bouncing bubbles and bubbles in all shapes and sizes.
Inside the Center, hands-on bubble activities demonstrate a bubble’s science and math principles (such as surface tension, elasticity, air pressure, molecular properties, and geometric properties) and our BubbleBusters stage show explains the science behind the super soapy fun.
Included with general admission to Discovery Science Center are bubble activities, learning stations and the Center’s more than 100 permanent hands-on exhibits. Mega Bubble Show tickets must be purchased in addition to general admission ($7 for non-members, $5 for members).

Meet the Artists
Fan Yang
Fan Yang is a world renowned bubble scientist, artist, and performer. Over the past two decades, Fan has explored the fascinating unknown world of soap bubbles, combining art with science. He has transformed a simple bubble into a beautiful piece of art, bringing bubble media into a new artistic dimension for the masses. Fan’s ingenious creations and dedication to the pursuit of his dream has brought to life an utterly unique form of entertainment. He emerged as Master of the Soap Bubbles and earned international acclaim in Germany, being voted “Artist of the Year” and is currently a 16-time Guinness Book of World Record holder, most recently having put an 8,800 lb elephant in a bubble.
Fan’s spectacular shows have been featured at the National Museum of Science and Technology (Ottawa, Canada), Pacific Science Center (Seattle, WA, USA), Singapore Science Centre (Singapore), and Ontario Science Center (Toronto, Canada). Deni Yang
Deni Yang has been combining entertainment, art and science performing in bubble shows for the most of his young life. Following in the footsteps of his parents Fan and Ana Yang, Deni has entertained audiences around the world with his marvelous stage performances. His first live appearance was at the age of four on RAI 1 Italian Television where he fascinated millions of viewers across Europe. It was the beginning of what would eventually bring Deni international acclaim at the Monte Carlo International Circus Festival (Monaco) in 1997, where he solidified his career as a bubble artist.
Deni has toured the globe with his spectacular stage show and has been featured at the National Museum of Science and Technology (Ottawa, Canada) and the Pacific Science Centre (Seattle, WA). He has also made numerous appearances on television shows around the world in Italy, Greece, France, and USA. Most recently Deni starred in the “White Bubble Show” in Seoul, Korea.

- Fifty 7th & 8th grade students and ten parent chaperones will be selected on a first come-first serve basis

- Bus transportation will be provided to and from Raytheon (located in El Segundo). Participants must arrive at Discovery Science Center no later than 6:15am and will arrive back at DSC between 2:00pm and 2:30pm
- Lunch will be provided

Santa Ana residents get in free at the Discovery Science Center on Tuesday
Orange County’s first and only Smithsonian Affiliate, the Taco Bell Discovery Science Center, is FREE for Santa Ana residents on the first Tuesday of the month, which is this week, on Feb. 1.
The Discovery Science Center is celebrating “A Decade of Discovery” as the Cube turns ten! The center has 59,000 square feet of exhibit space packed with science interactives designed to spark children’s natural curiosity.
In addition to the physical science complex, Discovery Science Center sees more than 150,000 school children in their classrooms each year. Now the largest provider of water education in Orange County, Discovery Science Center ranks in the top ten for education outreach among science centers across the nation.
The Science Center opened Dino Quest, the world’s first interactive dinosaur adventure, to record crowds in 2006! The Science of Hockey brought a new experience to the center in 2009. During the next five years, the Science Center will continue to expand our exhibit area and continue to grow our programs to help educate and inspire Orange County and surrounding areas.
New Exhibit: Grab the kids and run, jump and play your way through an interactive exhibition all about the human body. Sesame Street Presents: The Body comes to Discovery Science Center on January 29.
