Community: $1 Million Grant Award for Santa Anita Park Field Will Help Nearly Double Play Time / Parque Santa Anita Recibe $1 Millón de Dólares

The City of Santa Ana’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services Agency is the proud recipient of the State of California Youth Soccer and Recreation Development Program’s grant. The City of Santa Ana was awarded $1 million for the renovation of the Santa Anita Park Field. Plans are in the works to secure $2.5 million in matching funds for the completion of the project in fiscal year 2018-19.

The California Youth Soccer and Recreation Development Program awards grants on a competitive basis to fund new sports opportunities in heavily populated, low-income urban areas. Newly received grant monies will go towards the replacement of the current natural turf field with the installation of a synthetic turf field at Santa Anita Park. Continue reading→

The SAPD arrested five men for fighting at a charity soccer game last Sunday

The SAPD arrested five men that were caught on cellphone video getting into a brawl that also involved 45 others at a soccer match that occurred on Sunday, June 25, at Eddie West Field, in Downtown Santa Ana, according to the O.C. Register.

The soccer match was the Game of Legends featuring former Club America and Pumas professional players. The event was supposed to be a fundraiser for the United Soccer Talents Foundation, a Santa Ana-based organization that supports soccer players. Continue reading→

What can we learn from the embarrassing soccer fight in Santa Ana on Sunday?

A friendly game between former players of two professional Mexican soccer clubs on Sunday afternoon, June 25, at Eddie West Field in Santa Ana turned violent when dozens of fans rushed the field and began beating each other, forcing authorities to suspend the match, according to the O.C. Register.

The “game of legends” featured former Club America and Pumas players was supposed to benefit Santa Ana-based United Soccer Talents Foundation, which supports soccer players. Continue reading→

The Godinez H.S. Boy’s Soccer team will be honored on the MaxPreps Tour of Champions

The Godinez High School boys’ varsity soccer team will be presented with the Army National Guard National Ranking Trophy as part of the 12th annual MaxPreps Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard. Godinez finished No. 3 in the final rankings and is one of 10 boys’ varsity soccer teams that are being honored on this season’s tour. The presentation will be made during a lunch assembly.

This event is set for Friday, April 21, 2017, at 12:15 p.m. at the Cafeteria at Godinez High School, located at 3002 Centennial Rd., in Santa Ana. Participating in the event will be Godinez H.S. Athletic Director- Greg Coombs, Varsity Soccer Head Coach- Ruben Fernandez, MaxPreps Regional Representative- Josh Canales, and California Army National Guard Representative- SGT Marisa Danya. Community: Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to Celebrate the Newly Renovated Soccer Fields of the Dan Young Soccer Complex

SANTA ANA, CA – The City of Santa Ana invites you to the Dan Young Soccer Complex (DYSC) Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. to celebrate the newly renovated synthetic soccer fields.

The DYSC Youth Field #4 is the City’s first synthetic turf youth soccer field exclusively dedicated for youth soccer. Due to heavy use, weathering and expiration of the turf service life, the field surface needed to be replaced. The Parks, Recreation and Community Services Agency (PRCSA) identified funding in fiscal year 2015/16 from Park Acquisition and Development Funds, Park In-Lieu Funds, Strategic Plan Funds and Budget Surplus Funds to replace the synthetic turf on Field #4. Similar funding was identified the following year in fiscal year 2016/17 to also replace the synthetic turf on Adult Field #2. The project included the removal and disposal of the existing synthetic turf, inspection of the existing drainage system, and preparation and installation of the new synthetic turf. TWELFTH ANNUAL SPRING YOUTH SOCCER CAMP CONTINUES TO BUILD SELF-ESTEEM AND ENCOURAGE POSITIVE CHOICES IN YOUNG STUDENTS

SANTA ANA – The Orange County District Attorney’s Office (OCDA) is hosting the 12th annual Spring Youth Soccer Camp (SYSC) this week for selected elementary school students from Russell Elementary School in Santa Ana. SYSC is an ongoing community gang prevention effort organized through the Orange County Gang Reduction Intervention Partnership (OC GRIP) that encourages youth to avoid the eminent dangers of gang life and get involved in healthy team-building extra-curricular programs. The 3-day spring break soccer clinic kicked off this morning at 8:00 a.m. and will conclude on Wednesday, April 8, 2015.

The program is being held at Russell Elementary School at 600 South Jackson Street, Santa Ana. Members of the media are invited to attend all portions of the event. Continue reading→

SANTA ANA, CA. – The City of Santa Ana is excited to announce the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Memorial Exercise Park on Tuesday, November 18, 2014 at 4pm. Memorial Exercise Park, located at 2102 S. Flower Street, will be the City’s fourth exercise park and join locations at Birch Park, Garfield Park and the Maple/Occidental Exercise Area as part of the City’s ongoing efforts to encourage health and wellness in the community.

The new exercise area is constructed under a colorful canvas shade structure adjacent to the Memorial Community Center. Visitors will enjoy nine new exercise stations including a leg press, chest press, sit-up bench, cross country ski, upper body and more. SANTA ANA, CA (November 6, 2014) – The City of Santa Ana is hosting the Orange County Blues FC soccer team in an international friendly match against El Salvador Primera Division side Club Deportivo Atlético Marte on Sunday, November 16th at 4pm at Santa Ana Stadium. This will be the first International match for the recently rebranded OC Blues FC and their first ever game at Santa Ana Stadium.

“This is a great opportunity for the City of Santa Ana. This is a chance to see world class soccer players right here at our home stadium. The World Cup celebration got out of hand on Bristol last night

Santa Ana residents apparently got pretty riled up over Mexico’s World Cup victory against the Croatians.  According to the Santa Ana CopWatch Facebook page at least 30 Santa Ana Police Department cars showed up at Bristol and McFadden and started closing up streets in reaction to the spontaneous victory celebration.

The fan reaction reportedly included marching up and down Bristol Street and cruising.  The latter, in particular, is frowned upon by the SAPD. Continue reading→

YOUTH SOCCER REFEREE CONVICTED OF ENGAGING IN ORAL COPULATION WITH UNDERAGE TEENAGE BOY AND COMMITTING LEWD ACTS ON TWO ADDITIONAL BOYS

FULLERTON – A youth soccer referee was convicted yesterday of engaging in oral copulation with a teenage boy and molesting two additional boys. Jorge Diosdado Serafin, 31, Anaheim, pleaded guilty yesterday, Oct. 15, 2013, to three felony counts of oral copulation of a minor under 16 years old, one felony count of lewd act on a child, and one felony count of lewd act on a child under 14 years old. Serafin faces a maximum sentence of 10 years and eight months in state prison and mandatory lifetime sex offender registration at his sentencing Nov. 15, 2013, at 8:00 a.m. in Department N-12, North Justice Center, Fullerton.

At the time of the crimes, Serafin was a referee for Oakview Soccer League in Huntington Beach. Continue reading→

The Chivas USA are coming to Santa Ana – but our local NIMBY’s need not fret.  This won’t be the Major League Soccer Squad that plays at the Home Depot Center in Rancho Dominguez.

The Santa Ana Sentinel is reporting that “we’ll see a newly-formed Orange County branch of the Chivas USA Youth Academy, presided by first team Chivas USA player Jorge Villafaña, who is the first ever Sueño MLS Winner. As some of you may know Villafaña was born in Anaheim and played in Santa Ana growing up.” Continue reading→

And just on the heels of the Galaxy’s marketing efforts in Santa Ana, Chivas USA returns to the Santa Ana area to market this weekend’s game against the San Jose Earthquakes.

Edgar Mejía, who is on loan this season from Chivas de Guadalajara, and Anaheim native Carlos Borja will be in person at the Super A’s restaurant at 2949 Fairview Rd in Costa Mesa this Thursday April, 25th. The players will be there from 6 to 7:30 pm signing autographs, handing out jerseys, and giving out tickets to this weekend’s game to the first 50 people in attendance. Continue reading→

LA Galaxy Trying to Make Inroads in Santa Ana

Major League Soccer’s LA Galaxy has made a significant marketing blitz in Santa Ana in the last month. They bought at least two billboards, one on Harbor and 17th streets and another on Bristol and Alton, and they bought adds on Santa Ana Blvd and other OCTA bus routes.

Adding to that is the connection made with the Santa Ana Police Athletic & Activities League, which took a group of kids to see the Galaxy play Sporting Kansas City this last weekend at the Home Depot Center. It is unclear if the SAPAAL reach out to the Galaxy or vice versa. Continue reading→
