Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce event to feature SAPD’s Tom Serafin
The Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce is hosting their July Business Connection Luncheon on Thursday, July 7, from 11:30 am – 1:00 pm, at the South Coast Winery Restaurant, located at 3608 S. Bristol, in Santa Ana.
Speaker: Santa Ana Police Department Officer Tom Serafin
Topic: “Santa Ana Police Athletic & Activity League”
In order to combat gang violence, resist the temptation of joining criminal street gangs, and encourage youths to stay in school, the Santa Ana Police Department has formed the Santa Ana Police Athletic Activity League (SAPAAL). SAPAAL is a crime prevention program that employs educational, athletic, and recreational activities to create trust and understanding between youths and law enforcement.
Police officers coaching, tutoring and mentoring demonstrate to youths that officers are truly interested in their development and well-being. The Santa Ana Police Department implemented SAPAAL to develop a new community resource program focused on reducing gang violence. Studies show that youths who are involved in supervised extracurricular activities are significantly less likely to participate in high-risk illegal behavior.
SAPAAL is a proactive, long-term strategy designed not only to meet the goal of reducing street violence, but also to provide youths with the opportunity to build a successful future.
July showcased businesses will include CommAlliance (Jan Murray) and Advanced Office Services (Tony Napoli).
Thanks to our door prize donors in June: Women Helping Women (Trina) and Office Depot (Nancy Sciortino).

Racists – and Thomas Gordon – react after Mexico beats the U.S. soccer team
Mexico beating the U.S. men’s soccer team was a really big deal for the people of Santa Ana, and of course a lot of our residents came out into the streets to celebrate.
The O.C. Register reported that “Nearly 50 police officers spent hours on Saturday night dispersing a massive crowd on one of the city’s busiest streets following Mexico’s come-from-behind 4-2 win over the United States in the final of the Concacaf Gold Cup in Pasadena.”
Apparently, “more than 4,000 people flooded Bristol Street between Edinger Avenue and McFadden Avenue, cheering and celebrating Mexico’s win and waving Mexican flags,” according to SAPD Cmdr. Steve Colon.
But you know what? There were no reports of arrests or violence.
Contrast that with what happened when the San Francisco Giants won the World Series last year – the mayhem surrounding the San Francisco Giants’ World Series victory burned up on Twitter, Facebook, Twitpic and Flickr. It even had a mayor on Foursquare, and it had two Twitter hashtags. #SFRiots and #SFRiot, according to the Los Angeles Times.
And when the L.A. Lakers beat Boston last year, another riot erupted, according to the Christian Science Monitor.
Of course many of the Register’s readers erupted with racist comments. And as one would expect, Thomas Gordon showed up to. Who is Gordon? He ran for Santa Ana Mayor a few years back, and failed to qualify for the ballot last year as a City Council candidate in Ward 6. Now he is part of former Santa Ana Council Member Tom Lutz’ anti-soccer coalition of NIMBYs and Usual Suspects.
Here is what the O.C. Register reported with regard to Gordon: “Later, between 10 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., police wearing helmets and carrying batons used bullhorns to disperse the crowd at McFadden and Bristol, said Thomas Gordon, a Santa Ana resident who took the photo below. Some in the crowd were setting off fireworks, and more than two dozen patrol cars were at the scene, Gordon said.”
The best part of Gordon’s lame “reporting” was the on the scene picture he took, of two cops talking and NOTHING GOING ON. Click here to see the Register’s article, Gordon’s picture and a slew of racist comments by the Register’s readers.
(Note to Gordon: I have the day off today so please don’t bother filing another complaint with my employer).
But they Register’s readers weren’t the only racists to attack Mexican soccer fans. Dozens of white sports columnists ripped the fans who attended the match between the U.S. and Mexico, because the fans cheered for Mexico.
How crazy is that? Of course the Mexican soccer fans cheered for their Motherland. Yankees fans always cheer for the Bronx Bombers when the Yankees visit the Angels. So what? Folks will cheer the team they love – and the U.S. soccer team just plain sucks.
Bill Plaschke, at the L.A. Times, was one of the few columnists who got it right, “How many places are so diverse that it could fill football stadiums with folks whose roots are somewhere else? How many places offer such a freedom of speech that someone can display an American flag on their porch one day and cheer against the flag the next?” Bravo Bill!
Mexicans should be proud of the Mexican soccer team. And Americans who don’t like that should push for the firing of the American team’s coach – and wholesale changes to the team. Recruiting more Mexican American players would be a good start.

Our visit to a Chivas USA game reveals families and fun – no trash
Santa Ana Planning Commissioner Sean Mill scored us a pair of VIP tickets at yesterday’s Chivas USA soccer match against the Dallas team. So we drove up the 405 Freeway and arrived early at the Home Depot Center in Carson to take it all in.
The Home Depot Center is something else. The parking is shared with Cal State Dominguez Hills. There is plenty of parking and security. The lot was quite clean and everyone was well behaved and having a good time.
You might recall that the NIMBY Usual Suspects here in Santa Ana are screaming about trash and diapers, with respect to the prospect that the Chivas USA might move here to Santa Ana. But Mill and I didn’t see ANY trash, or diapers. What we saw was a lot of families having an awesome time.
There were a lot of Latino families at the game but we also saw a lot of Caucasians too. That made sense as the Chivas USA squad is majority non-Latino and the Chivas Girls are pretty diverse too.
There was a Chivas themed family area that was really busy with vendors including State Farm Insurance, Sprint, Juanitas and other big companies. They were giving away all sorts of stuff including hats, t-shirts, water bottles, etc. There was also a number of stages with live music and dancing.
The Chivas Girls signed free posters and the Chivas mascot ran around taking pictures with the kids and their parents. The whole event was one big community celebration.
The VIP section we sat in featured hosts and servers that brought food right to you. We also won two seats each for a future game, from State Farm Insurance.
The Chivas USA team also celebrated AIDS Awareness Day, as you can see in the picture above. They are also hosting a Diversity Day at an upcoming game – they appear to be huge supporters of the gay and lesbian community. Again, the Usual Suspects haven’t even noticed that.
As you will see in the picture slideshow embedded above, the Chivas USA games are fun for all and there are no security issues whatsoever. The NIMBY Usual Suspects are wrong again, as usual.
The fact however is that the Chivas USA may never come to Santa Ana. They play in a beautiful facility in Carson. The only reason I could see them leaving was if we could guarantee to sell out the games. I think we could do better than Carson, where the Chivas USA play second fiddle to the Galaxy, but it is still a long shot. That has not of course stopped the Usual Suspects from their usual screaming and racist attacks. Par for the course…
Chivas USA hosting the first major league soccer “Equality Night” on July 23
The Santa Ana NIMBYs who are opposing the proposed move of the Chivas USA soccer team to Santa Ana clearly have no idea what this team and its management are all about. I know for a fact that several of the Santa Ana “Usual Suspects” are gay or are supporters of the gay community. Well, guess what? Chivas USA is going to be hosting Major League Soccer’s first Equality Night for gay fans, on July 23.
Here are the details, from Outsports.com:
Los Angeles’ Chivas USA to host Major League Soccer’s first ‘Equality Night’ for gay fans
Jun 16th, 2011 by Cyd Zeigler jr..
Los Angeles-based Chivas USA is holding Major League Soccer’s first-ever ‘Equality Night’ on Saturday, July 23. It is shaping up to be a really special night. They are hosting the Houston Dynamo that night; Dynamo star Mike Chabala has been an outspoken advocate against homophobia and participated in the NOH8 campaign. The Los Angeles Gay Men’s Chorus will sing the national anthem that night. There will be a special private reception for Equality Night attendees. And the NOH8 campaign will be at the pre-game shooting NOH8 photos of attendees! Tickets to the game are $20, and aportion of the ticket sales will benefit the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center.
Plus, Chivas star goalie Dan Kennedy has recorded a welcome video for all LGBT fans attending the evening (video after the jump). Outsports is a proud sponsor of the event, along with MKH2O, Major League Soccer, NOH8 and the LA Gay & Lesbian Center.
The team is going out of its way to make this a fantastic evening and to embrace its gay fans. So buy a ticket here and come on out to the event! All Equality Night seats are in the same section right on the sideline (section 130). It is the same night as the Columbus Crew’s Pride Cup – it’s the gayest night in MLS history! The Colorado Rapids have previously held a gay-themed night (h/t to David Klotz!).
Why the Chivas Soccer Stadium should be built at the Willowick Golf Course
To understand the true genius that is the idea behind putting the Chivas Soccer Stadium complex at the site of the Willowick Golf Course, you have to look at the Google satellite map of the area. You see that diagonal grey line that abuts the north side of Willowick and runs from Garden Grove to Santa Ana Blvd.? That is the old P&E Santa Ana line. It is an abandoned rail line. And it is where Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido wants to run a new street car system.
Now it all makes sense. I thought the street car idea was pretty lame until I connected the dots – this new light rail system will begin at the Santa Ana Regional Transportation Center, where the Metrolink trains currently stop, over on the east of Downtown Santa Ana, and stretch all the way to downtown Garden Grove. And it will bring Chivas fans to the new Stadium complex.
Take a look at the neighborhoods surrounding Willowick. This is a very blue collar area. The new light rail/street car will transform all of the neighborhoods lining the old P&E line. And the new Chivas Soccer Stadium Complex will be a game changer. I am told that it will include recreational facilities for our youth.
Think about the big picture. The Chivas U.S. soccer club is a professional sports franchise. It will be Santa Ana’s first pro team. It will put us on the map – and soccer is the most popular game in the world. Here in the U.S. it is the most popular youth sport.
The street car to Garden Grove will also give our residents direct access to a cluster of colleges, including Cal State Fullerton’s Extension campus.
What is the downside? I don’t see it. The street car system would be funded by Measure M and federal grants.
There is already a precedent for this in San Diego, where a light rail system delivers fans to the San Diego Chargers Stadium.
The opposition to this project is comprised of a cluster of mostly white Republicans – none of whom live near the Willowick Golf Course. The Voice of OC recently provided us with a list of some of these malcontents:
- Tim Rush – not married, no kids, lives in south Santa Ana. Registered Republican.
- Tom Lutz – married but retired, lives by Santa Ana College. Registered Republican.
- Don Cribb – lives in the Park Santiago neighborhood, in north Santa Ana. Not married, no kids.
- Alfredo Amezcua – lives in Morrison Park. Divorced. Kids are grown up. Registered Democrat.
- Thomas Gordon – lives in south Santa Ana. Not married. No kids. Registered Republican.
- Dave Brandt – lives in south Santa Ana. Retired. Registered Republican.
- Debbie McEwen – lives in French Park, where she once tried to keep Mexicans out with traffic barriers, which had to be torn out after the ACLU won a lawsuit against the City. Not married. No kids.
A friend of mine recently attended a meeting of these malcontent “Usual Suspects. I asked my friend what they talked about. The response was just as I figured, “they talked about how Mexicans always leave trash and diapers behind.”
As usual, the opposition to the Chivas soccer team and soccer complex is rooted in overt racism. That should not come as a surprise given the folks who are involved and given that most of them are Republicans. I don’t know what possessed Amezcua to join hands with these xenophobic haters. Bad move Al!
These folks are crying about traffic and noise – and are saying that the Chivas will push Santa Ana High School and Santa Ana College football games out of Eddie West Stadium. The truth is that the Chivas will play at that facility but only until the new complex at Willowick is built. The Santa Ana City Council will work with the SAUSD School Board and the Rancho Santiago Community College District’s Board of Education to make sure that the school football teams are accomodated. Pulido has allies on both of those elected bodies. The City of Santa Ana has good relationships with both school districts.
As for traffic, the fact is that many Santa Ana residents will get to Eddie West field on foot, by bike and on the bus. Eddie West Stadium has limited capacity. I expect each Chivas game to be a total sell-out.
The good news for the school districts is that there will be improvements made to Eddie West Stadium that will benefit the school teams, at no cost to them.
It has been suggested that the Chivas soccer complex be built in east Santa Ana. But when you consider the implications of the proposed street car system, it is obvious that Willowick is a slam dunk.
Will the City of Garden Grove, which owns Willowick, play ball? You bet. The street car system will bring new customers to their downtown, revitalizing that area too. You think the restaurant owners in their downtown will be opposed to that? No way!

The Usual Suspects return, to try to stop the Chivas from coming to Santa Ana
Pictured above: Debbie McEwen, a member of the Usual Suspects’ coalition against the Chivas Soccer team
They’re back…the folks I used to refer to as the “Usual Suspects” have come together again. This time they are ticked off about Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido’s ongoing attempts to bring the Chivas soccer team to Santa Ana.
Here is what the Voice of OC has reported about the resurgence of the “Usual Suspects:”
With rumors swirling about a potential pro soccer expansion into Santa Ana, some 50 residents gathered Wednesday night to complain about potential traffic, noise and other problems that soccer games could create.
Residents opposed to the move appear to be circulating a protest petition. They are particularly incensed over rumors that Mayor Miguel Pulido is holding private meetings aimed at bringing the team to the city while avoiding any input from residents.
Tom Lutz, a former council member, hosted the residents at his home. He said he found out about the negotiations and possible move only because of old contacts he has at City Hall.
Lutz said he understands that if the soccer team comes to the city, its first home would be Santa Ana Stadium. If true, that would displace football teams of local high schools like Mater Dei and Century, according to Lutz. The move also would mean Santa Ana College’s football team could lose access to the stadium, he said.
At the end of the meeting, residents formed a committee to prevent the team from coming to the city. The committee includes Rush, Lutz, Don Cribb, Alfredo Amezcua, Thomas Gordon, Dave Brandt, and Debbie McEwen.
Note that failed Santa Ana Mayoral candidate Alfredo Amezcua is now a full-fledged member of the Usual Suspects. Latino voters will remember this when Amezcua comes begging for votes the next time he runs for Mayor.
I am not buying the silly argument about the school sports programs getting kicked out of Eddie West Stadium. Note that none of the new Usual Suspects are on the SAUSD School board – and not one of them has any children enrolled in our SAUSD schools. In fact most of them aren’t even married, or are too old to have kids.
What these NIMBYs don’t realize is the tremendous economic impact that the Chivas will have on our city. Nor do they care that the majority of our residents will be thrilled to welcome the Chivas to town.
I also don’t buy the open space argument. The Willowick golf course is not of any use to the thousands of residents in Santa Ana who don’t play golf, or cannot afford to do so. But the proposed Chivas complex will include new soccer fields that will be a huge boon to the young people of our city.
If the Usual Suspects want more open space they should join the dying lawn bowling league at Santiago Park, or go jog in our cemeteries.

Galaxy face a confident Chivas USA
Chivas USA brimming with confidence ahead of SuperClasico
CARSON, Calif. – As far as bitter rivalries go, the SuperClasico between the Galaxy and Chivas USA lately has left something to be desired.
The Galaxy leads the all-time series 12-3-5, including 5-0-3 in the last eight matches, and haven’t lost to their co-tenants since a 3-0 loss on Sept. 13, 2007. The Galaxy have had a decided edge almost from the moment the series began in 2005.
But that may be about to change Saturday at The Home Depot Center (7 p.m., ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes) in this season’s first leg of the series. Chivas, under first-year coach Robin Fraser, has a 3-3-3 record that includes a stunning 3-2 victory over the Red Bulls last weekend in New York.
“They’re probably full of confidence,” Galaxy midfielder Chris Birchall said. “We see them every day and speak to a couple of their players, and from what (Chivas defender Ante) Jazic said to me is they’re feeling more of a team every weekend.
“That’s good. We want to play any team when they’re at their best. At the moment Chivas is playing really well and it should be a great game and hopefully a lot of fans will turn out.”
The Galaxy’s Todd Dunivant, who counts Chivas’ Simon Elliott – “He’s a Stanford guy,” Dunivant joked – and Heath Pearce among his closest friends, said the proximity with their Chivas rivals makes it difficult for him and his Galaxy teammates not to keep track of them during the season.
“We talk to each other every day, we park next to them in the parking lot … it’s a unique situation in this league, probably any league,” Dunivant said. “They have a lot of confidence right now, they have a new direction and they’re buying into it.
“That makes for a dangerous team.”
This weekend’s game marks a reunion of sorts for Fraser and Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena. Arena coached Fraser from 1999-2001 with the U.S. National Team and always was impressed with Fraser’s approach to the game.
If there was someone who had coaching potential, Arena said, it was Fraser.
“What always impressed me about Robin was the kind of character he had,” Arena said. “He wasn’t one of those players where you had to measure every word when you spoke to him. He wasn’t a guy with a major ego or attitude about him.
“I think because the way he always conducted himself you would expect that he could become a good coach. The biggest mistake people make is saying a former player could be a good coach. Most people don’t realize they’re players, not coaches, and to be a coach is a whole different mindset.
“I think he was one of the few that you would say if he wanted to be a coach that he would do a good job.”
The Galaxy’s Mike Magee said Fraser and Chivas certainly have the Galaxy’s attention with their progress to date.
“They’re definitely good. Even when they weren’t getting results, they were playing really well,” Magee said. “Things just weren’t going their way, but they’re one of the hottest teams in the west.
“It’s a tough time to be playing them right now.”
The Galaxy face Chivas USA at The Home Depot Center on Saturday, May 21 at 7 p.m. on ESPN 2/Deportes. Fans that can’t make it to the match can join other supporters at Galaxy viewing parties at ESPN Zone at LA Live or Bier Academy in Santa Clarita. MORE INFO
